19-20 Transfers

Yor Anei, the OSU Transfer big, followed TJ on Twitter today fwiw.

Adding him obviously would be a huge plus on several levels, but we’ll see.
Grad transfer or sit a year?
Two years left & sits out one, but could have waiver angle if OSU remains on probation. Imo, worth taking him, but suspect he’ll have solid schools interested. May mean nothing, but I believe Mike Boynton and Van M have a good relationship.

Junior college center Valdir Manuel has been released from his Letter of Intent to Penn State and will not be joining the Nittany Lions for the 2020-21 season, a program source told Lions247. No specific reason was given for the parting of the ways.
Manuel was scheduled to enroll a Penn State for the second summer semester, which begins July 1. He is now free to pursue opportunities at other programs.

May not be this guy but, somewhere along the line, one of these guys will see the NYC stage as an opportunity even if only for 1 season. This will happen once CMA has changed perception of our program which, while once as good and better than Nova, is viewed as being a dormant, middling D1 program - whether we like it or not. We had opportunities to break the mold during the Lavin years but missed the boat.

A guy who lost two fingers but still overcame that obstacle to play D-1 basketball seems like the type of guy advertisers would salivate over if he put up nice numbers over next two years. Someone should urge that kid to play in a city where he'll be easy to find and bring in for a meeting . . .

Apparently staff is involved with OSU transfer big, Yor Anei. Hopefully we’ll see to what extent and who the competition is soon.

Music to my ears. Would LOVE to add this kid to the roster. Game changer for us up front.

Agree. I think this guy would change the calculus on the season.

I agree. Kid is super long, has defensive skills as well as skills at the other end and can run the court. He and Toro could make the center position a Lot stronger than it has been in years. It would push teams away from being able to out-big us so easily.

Obviously not the end all be all, but besides St. John’s teams he followed recently are Oregon State, St. Mary’s, SMU, Georgia Tech, UMKC, Xavier, Boise State, Western Kentucky and UT-Arlington. Decent competition.

The question is how many of these schools have a 'ship to offer this late in the game

In addition, always gonna have big boys after the good players. Gonna need to win some of those battles. Would
Much rather be able to grab Yor and assure we at least 1 center for the next 2 seasons, than just sanction ourselves one scholarship this year.

I believe Oregon State and UMKC are the only full programs at the moment. Rest have a scholarship to give.

..... playing just 21.9 minutes per game on average in each of his two seasons at OSU, Anei is an analytics darling viewed as one of the conference's best shot-blockers. As a freshman, he ranked fourth nationally in block percentage and first among Big 12 players in conference play, per KenPom. As a sophomore, he ranked 13th and third in those same categories, respectively.

How many of those are in states where covid is exploding? If I were advising, I'd chop Texas and Missouri right off the list.

NorCal is in relatively good shape compared to Central Valley and SoCal. St. Mary's is tucked away pretty good on a nice little campus, so you never know.

Honestly, despite what the media is saying, Covid is almost a non-factor as far as health risks goes for college-aged kids. That said, nyc is doing well and I hope we push hard and can land this kid. Add a shotblocker to the back line of our already tough defense and we can really be good. Not holding my breath but this is the kid id like to see fill that ship.
