Creighton (MSG), Sun., Feb. 16, 3p, FS-1

As posters we root so hard for SJU we become ultra critical. There must be 50 posts complaining about the SJU defense and yet Creighton scored 73 points which is probably one of their lowest point total this season.

It’s human nature to be critical . Sports are no exception .

Remember when you got a 88 on a test , your Parents would invariably say “ why didn’t you get a 90?”

We were getting best off the dribble early by Neal who is lightning quick and he surprised our defenders . We tightened up on him but , he also has a outside game .
He’s going to be big trouble for us again , in the BET if we see the Blue Jays again or , next year . He’s only. Soph .

I think criticizing our free throw shooting is legitimate . Pitino as Coach , has to be more dedicated to fixing it . It’s a big problem as the season goes on.
The 3 point shooting is weak and really a result of not having recruited a sharp shooter than can play more than 25 seconds .

I look at Creighton and wistfully wish we had a Ashworth . He’s quite a handful and would make any team better.

I hope RP recruits a PG from the Portal that is 6’3 and can shoot .

Smith , without injury , would have bern even better but , he gets manhandled going to the basket and running into screens . He’s a little small for the BE.

But , then I look at Ziegler at Tennessee and he’s small too .

How did we miss recruiting him ? I
Guess that’s on CMA ?
Looking for 2 Wins this week .

Must Win ? Of course

We don’t win games because of our shooting. We win games because we play great defense , lock the other team down , wear them out , out tough them and score enough points to win. The way we play , we can win no matter how we shoot.

Very true , so far . But , we made the Creighton game far closer than it should have been down the stretch .
53 percent free throw shooting is going to bite us down the road . And, it can happen at any time .

In a close BET game or , in any Round of the NCAA post season .

It’s a bad combo that we have escaped from in most games . Bad 3 point shooting and poor free throw shooting .

But , we have a relentless and over powering pressure Defense , even if we aren’t pressing .
I know Kalkbrenner had that injury at a inopportune time yesterday but , even before he wasn’t his dominating self . Might have been nursing something prior .

Beating UCONN at MSG would be a treat and sweeping them a nice payback for all the last 25 years .

A paragraph from the 2/17/25 edition of Newsday article

Storm’s effort cannot waver down stretch

“Pitino said that this success has happened despite some early-season issues inside the locker room — one involving Smith and another involving Simeon Wilcher — that people will see in the next episode of the Vice TV docuseries about the program’s season.
re-watched the game late last night... cause im a sicko- i mean Fan... and being an over-analyzing fan... late in the 2nd half- RJ drove it, and with Dev wide open on the wing for 3, RJ opted for a tear-drop-ish floater that went in... and what was strange, no one seemed happy about it lol....

A TO followed it, and it was clear something was amiss... Dev wasnt happy, Ayo came right o RJ to saay something, and Rick spoke to RJ for a about 10secs... assume it was - "kick it out"... anyway... onwards!

maybe it’s all this 3 pt talk lately from Rick, but Wilcher kinda hovers at the arc. Early in the year he was driving and playing aggressive offense. Maybe he’s deferring a bit to kadary and company. Idk

NBC news during the sports segment while recapping the game showed that sequence and the ensuing timeout. It showed everything you mentioned.

Ashworth after the game

Ashworth is quite a player . If you don’t admire his play , regardless of him being a opponent , you don’t appreciate good BB .
We chased him all over the Court yesterday and still he was shooting the lights out .

Our Defense wore him down a bit as we actually had him miss 2 free throws. He only missed 3
all year prior .

McDermott , in my opinion is on his way to a HOF career . He’s as good a Coach as any in College BB today . Year in , year out the Jays are always a tough out .

He has a great knack of retooling from year to year . With Players that fit perfectly in his system .
Doubt he leaves Creighton but , if Indiana opens its check book wide enough , who knows what happens .

He’s gotten Creighton to heights in BB that few could imagine when they joined the BE .

I have been going to games for over 40 years now. I remember the really BIG games in the mid 80s against Georgetown and Syracuse and then the stretch in the late 90s into 2000 against Syracuse, UConn and Duke. We have sold out MSG many times in the past. But, it usually meant that there were 5-10 thousand fans rooting against us. Yesterday was amazing in that it was a sold out building that was a sea of red. Creighton brought maybe a few hundred fans. It was all us. That was something that most of us have only dreamed of over the years.

Many say McD is best offensive guru out there. That is what made the matchup yesterday special, D v O at its best.
