Creighton (MSG), Sun., Feb. 16, 3p, FS-1

Ashworth is quite a player . If you don’t admire his play , regardless of him being a opponent , you don’t appreciate good BB .
We chased him all over the Court yesterday and still he was shooting the lights out .

Our Defense wore him down a bit as we actually had him miss 2 free throws. He only missed 3
all year prior .

McDermott , in my opinion is on his way to a HOF career . He’s as good a Coach as any in College BB today . Year in , year out the Jays are always a tough out .

He has a great knack of retooling from year to year . With Players that fit perfectly in his system .
Doubt he leaves Creighton but , if Indiana opens its check book wide enough , who knows what happens .

He’s gotten Creighton to heights in BB that few could imagine when they joined the BE .
Ashworth is great but he missed a few wide open looks down the stretch. He makes those and his team may have won the game.

Lots to like about Ashworth’s shooting and court sense, but his flopping and theatrics make him very hard to take, especially out past the 3 point line where they need to create a new category at the Oscars to recognize his achievements.

When Scott hit that side step three late in the second half, being in the building that was definitely one of the loudest crowd pops I’ve experienced in MSG for an SJU game

The reaction to the Hardy shot against Pitt was a celebration of being released from almost ten years of dreadful games that many of us never imagined was possible. The crowd from yesterday was different vibe. I've been going to our games at MSG for almost 50 years and only one game was comparable - the sweater game when it was the hottest ticket in NYC. I was in the last row for that one. It was a $20 ticket.

Given the circumstances, yesterday's crowd and atmosphere was more impressive in that the stakes were not as high.

The lack of free throw shooting is maddening, but I get the idea of saying, "without Zuby we were..." Most teams have that guy that hurts them at the line and, in crunch time, you avoid getting him the ball.

Our problem, if you can call it that, is that Zuby has taken more free throws than anyone on the team. I don't think, from what I've seen, it is because teams target him to get him to the line, but more so because he is so dang active on the glass and getting to loose balls. You can be mad at the misses, but a lot of times those misses don't exist if Zuby didn't do something great to make / extend a play and draw the foul.

In crunch time we need Scott, RJ and Sim to handle the ball to get to the line (Kadary too if he continues to tighten his shot). The problem is that Sim and Scott, while hitting at an 80% clip each, don't generate any chances for themselves: each averaging like 1 attempt per game. We just need the guards, wings, and forwards to hit the majority of their freebies, and learn to live with Zuby being hot and cold at the line.

Ashworth is a baller. Would love to have him on my team any day. McDermott has always come off as a genuine honorable person (UNLIKE HURLEY) and great coach (LIKE HURLEY). Hope he stays in the BE conference for a long time.

Can someone tell me why not from now on the only 2 things the team should practice is hours of free throws and 3 point shots. I am perplexed why the coaching staff has not been able to correct at least the free throw situation.

My guess on the free throws is that it is a combination of the level of effort we play with and being in their heads. For example, Ashworth was 94-97 on FTs before yesterday. He had missed 3 FTs for the SEASON through 25 games. Yet, he missed 2 front ends of a 1 and 1 yesterday. Physical and mental fatigue.

MR , I’m surprised with your comment . Open looks down the stretch ?

Sure ,he missed a couple but , he single handily kept the Jays in the game with Kalk out .

If Ashworth were our PG this year , we might be undefeated . His 3 point s shooting and near 100 percent free throw shooting would be amazing

Perhaps his defense would need work but , he’s quick enough . Smith didn’t do much to shut him down . Not many players could .

He was asked to do everything for the Jays yesterday and did. I don’t recall him being turned over with our Press .

Sea of Red. With so many Cuse fans we sometimes had a sea of Orange. Or Conn or Nova Blue. Very refreshing.

re-watched the game late last night... cause im a sicko- i mean Fan... and being an over-analyzing fan... late in the 2nd half- RJ drove it, and with Dev wide open on the wing for 3, RJ opted for a tear-drop-ish floater that went in... and what was strange, no one seemed happy about it lol....

A TO followed it, and it was clear something was amiss... Dev wasnt happy, Ayo came right o RJ to saay something, and Rick spoke to RJ for an about 10secs... assume it was - "kick it out"... anyway... onwards!
I do remember that play as I was yelling at the TV for Luis to pass to Dev. You could see the look of disappointment on Dev’s face as Luis took the floater as that’s probably considered a tough shot to make. If it wasn’t for the TO I don’t think Pitino would have said anything. But if he missed the shot Coach probably would’ve subbed him out.

I still can't believe they got badly robbed in that Elite Eight game. He should have a Final Four

The runouts were all Neal. I liked RJ on him in the last 10 minutes of the game.

Problem we had against Nova and again vs Creighton is that both teams let Zuby roam to the perimeter on switches and then killed us on the offensive boards. Although RJ, Kadary and Scott all post good rebounding numbers (RJ in particular has a nose for the ball especially on the offensive end) none of them have legit size and none of them are especially good fundamental rebounders in terms of boxing out and clearing space.

Pitino's answer both games was to go to either the Vince/Prey lineup or put a second big in with Zuby. But it would be nice if we could protect the defensive boards better when Zuby winds up defending a point guard out at the 3 point line.
Agree 1000%!
