Creighton (MSG), Sun., Feb. 16, 3p, FS-1

I didn't notice Dunlap on the bench yesterday. Did I miss him? He's been a presence there all year.

What was amazing yesterday was how well we protected the ball w 5 only turnovers, a 21/5 assists to turnover ratio and as usual managed not to lose anyone to fouls. Zuby plays 35 minutes and commits 2 fouls. That is incredible and reflects his footwork, heady play and discipline.

My only concern yesterday was yielding too many layups in transition, which was better down the stretch. Also Creighton runs a great fast break.

The runouts were all Neal. I liked RJ on him in the last 10 minutes of the game.

Problem we had against Nova and again vs Creighton is that both teams let Zuby roam to the perimeter on switches and then killed us on the offensive boards. Although RJ, Kadary and Scott all post good rebounding numbers (RJ in particular has a nose for the ball especially on the offensive end) none of them have legit size and none of them are especially good fundamental rebounders in terms of boxing out and clearing space.

Pitino's answer both games was to go to either the Vince/Prey lineup or put a second big in with Zuby. But it would be nice if we could protect the defensive boards better when Zuby winds up defending a point guard out at the 3 point line.

Where have we seen this picture before? Fall behind by double digits, miss threes in bunches, barely better from inside the arc, free throw line an adventure? Then we just turn up the pressure and slowly but surely beat the opponent down. Dominate the glass and leave them dazed and confused, Zep fan here. And I don't want to hear any crap about Kalk being out for that stretch, when he went out we were up by 3, when he came back by 4.

Alley fighters and bully ball! :)

"Pitino himself said he was “shocked” that Smith was suddenly able to play despite a shoulder problem that the coach thought might keep him out for the remainder of the regular season"
McDermott’s presser was funny with his do you believe anything he says. He’s also a good Coach and talked about the importance of playing in the Garden. They have a solid Program. Big win for us. We might see them again at BE Tourney.

I’ll just include Luis and Kadary’s free throws and make it 81% instead, lol. 14-17.

Which honestly is very encouraging since those are our two closers and will have the ball in their hands at end of games.
Not being a smart ass. In Baylor loss, team shot 16-28 and Zuby’s misses were crucial. In Nova one point loss, team was 6-10. In Creighton one point loss, team was 4-7.
We shot 23-28 in Georgia 3 point loss, so it can be argued that we’d have only one loss with better free throw shooting.

The free throw shooting scares me the most about the team, by far. But I do think it’s important to look at it with some context. RJ and Kadary are guys who need to be over 75-80% in tight March games. Hopefully Kadary’s turned a corner.

I actually believe Rick when he says Zuby’s free throw shooting miscues are mental. He was lights out against Georgia. Very erratic in other intense environments, like Baylor/@Providence. He’s too valuable to sit at end of games.
