Zags: Welcome Aboard Slice

One man to be thanked is SJU president Bobby Gempesaw. Instead of going the money saving route as some feared, he has OKd spending that may be in the ballpark of the prior staff. For a man born in the Philippines, he seems to have more of an understanding of the importance of the basketball program to the university than the prior president.

FYI, basketball is huge in the Philippines.

Coming from the low of Obekpa's suspension and loss in the tourney, the positive newsflow the past few weeks is energizing. From a 10,000 foot perspective, it seems like we are doing all the right things.

Maybe KFC was on board with the hire and to celebrate.

Save the best slice for yourself. FREE with a 10pc meal or larger.

With all these reports coming out that are saying it's basically a done deal, you would think that the school would want to make an official announcement as soon as possible. I don't see aany reason to put it off any longer. It could be similar to the head coaching hire.....you don't need to go into all the details, just state that an agreement has been reached to hire him to the staff.

I think it is symbolic that as I was reading this thread about Slice's hire, I jumped off the couch from a 3.5 earthquake here in LA. There is major moving and shaking going on with SJU hoops and I could not be happier!

Yeah, that was one of the bigger ones I've felt in a while. We're not far from Hahn Park. I had never heard of Windsor Hills before so at least I learned something.

Former Moore Catholic star Rommel Santos played there and was wildly popular.

Probably because you can't make an official announcement until it's actually official.. Contract signed and such... They are acting like little teenage girlfriends teasing us like this instead of just making it official..

Wow random name to throw out there. Originally from SI?

I'm from LI, but one of my best friends from college dated him on and off for years, so I'd hang out with him at SI parties, etc. Got dragged out to Post from NYC on a weeknight more than once to see him play. Haven't seen him in many years, but he was a really good guy.

Know his cousins better, but played against him. Good player.

I don't get it.

This is awesome news. The new regime is clearly looking to put a stranglehold on the NYC recruiting scene. Go get em guys, let's take this town again!

@NYPost_Brazille: #sjubb makes it official Barry "Slice" Rohrssen associate head coach.

@JonRothstein: St. John's has officially hired Barry "Slice" Rohrssen as Associate Head Coach, per the school. Joins Matt Abdelmassih on staff. #SJUBB

Thanks Paultz. I had a feeling it would be Associate Head Coach rather than assistant or top recruiter. Why would he leave Kentucky for anything less.

@mabde33: Happy to be working alongside "Slice"....an absolute home run addition. Now off to continue to build this program piece by piece #SJUBB
