Yankees 2024/25 Offseason Hot Stove Talk

Soto to the Mets.

This was becoming more of a lose-lose for the Yankees by the day.

Either they tie themselves up in another long-term deal (10 years would have been ideal, 13 was the border line for me), or they leave themselves with too many holes.

I have zero confidence in Hal (and I do mean Hal, not Cashman), to be willing to spend something close to what he was willing to give Soto, to shore up the holes on this team.

So, either way, they would have been worse off.

They better not sign Pete Alonso. We need lefty bats.

It will be interesting to see what the pivot is - Santander? Teoscar Hernandez? Burnes? Trade for Crochet and Robert?

It's a huge loss for sure, but a 15 year contract is insane. They literally never work out. A-Rod's deal, Pujols, Mike Trout, even Stanton. But, Cohen can outbid anyone, and he proved it. This is good for NY baseball, probably not for the rest of the league aside from the Dodgers.

Let's see how Soto can elevate the Mets to the level of the Dodgers, Phillies, Braves, maybe even the Padres and Brewers, each and every year. I just don't see it. Clearly a money grab.

I agree we need lefty bats but not just any lefty bat and that is how you wind up with Joey Gallo (who I posted at the time didn’t move the needle for me because he was a lefty Gary Sanchez with speed offensively).

He was always going to max out his earning potential as he has been waiting for free agency since he started and this played out perfectly.

Cohen was always going to outbid the Yankees and our only chance is if we were close in numbers and he decided he would give us a slight discount.

I am somewhat disappointed but not surprised or crushed because this was always going to be a possibility. We had an enjoyable season and for the first time since 09 actually got to the WS. Now is time to make smart incremental moves to get us back and actually win one.
