Yankees - 2019

Then Cashman lied to all of us last week, when he said it's not about the money. Because, giving 29 year old Hicks 7 years, is the same as giving 26 year old Harper 10 years, IMO. Also, Hicks's best attribute is tracking down fly balls in CF, which he does at an elite level. However, legs tend to be the first thing to go, so I don't expect this contract to age well. Offensively, there is no comparison. Everyone believes Hicks had a great year last year, and Harper had a bad one, but Harper's OPS was still 55 points higher.

If Hicks is as great as the Yankees seem to think he is (he's not, BTW), then they should have been able to have netted a nice return in a trade. That would have opened up the door for Harper's contract (who, to me, was always a better FA bet then Machado, both in general, and for the Yankees specifically), and I think the Yankees would have been better for it. Most people don't agree with me, but that's how I've felt all through this offseason.

Good move. Team friendly terms and security for Hicks.

Too long a term. Good player, but not elite. I would have preferred 3-year deal.

I like the Hicks signing. He is an excellent defensive outfielder, has good power and a great on base percentage - really works the count. Would have preferred 5 or 6 years, but can live with 7 at the price they got him for.

The Phillies signed Harper for 13 years $330 million. I'm sure glad the Yankees did not go there. This is the Phillies version of a Bobby Bonilla contract!

I was the biggest Harper-to-the Yankees cheerleader out there, and even I think 13 years is too much.

The AAV is actually not terrible. For 10 years, that would have been a great deal for the Yankees. Even 11 years if you absolutely had to go there. But 13 years? Too much, IMO.

I still don't love the Aaron Hicks deal (I think the Yankees vastly overrate his skill set), but it's a lot more tolerable now.

The funny part from what you wrote is when Harper contract is done Bonilla will still have 4 years left on his Mets payments

That is amazing! Maybe the worst contract ever.

Looks like a beautiful day for baseball in the Bronx. Luke Voit with a monstrous three run blast to center in the 1st, 3-0 Yanks.

Thank God, that's true for both NY baseball teams. Hope springs eternal in April (and the last couple of days of March)!

vegas has yanks & astros winning 96 1/2 games. next are the red suxs, dodgers, and Indians.
yesterdays win should be the template for the season. starter goes 5 or 6, then the deep/talented bullpen takes it from there. one inning at a time.
yanks beat a weak team and a weak starter.
#99 was on fire. a good season by voit would be an extra treat.
kraken still mystifies me. I cant figure his game out at all.
bravo tanaka. better fielding would have given him yielding zero runs.

I've felt this way all off-season, but even more so after seeing him in Spring Training (yesterday just confirmed it more).

In terms of the production a team is likely to get, for the money paid to him, there was no better free agent signing this off-season, then Adam Ottovino, IMO. The guy is a straight up stud.

Most simply viewed him as David Robertson's replacement, and feel the production will be a wash, but I didn't think Robertson had a great year last year (although the metrics said that he did). Ottovino will be better, IMO, and is the reason why the Yankees should be considered favorites in the AL East (granted, only slightly favored over Boston).

Couldn't wait for baseball to begin, now NY has something to watch, thinking the Mets with the moves they made will contend for the NL East. It could be a fun summer.
A repeat of 2000? When NY had baseball on lock.

Just to long, 6 months of everyday baseball, I can't really get into until after the break

I love the Yankees as I love St. John's. Its been crazy how the past 20 years I go straight from rooting for a struggling program that seems eternally snake bitten and gets me excited with even a modicum of success to a franchise that seemingly does most things right and has often gotten the breaks. It makes me appreciate the Yanks even more and how well run they are as a franchise (and how fortunate I am to have been raised rooting for them). Another year in which we are likely in contention for a title and would be the 27th straight year in which we've had a winning product on the field, which is remarkable.

game 2 - yankee weakness exposed - their defense.
kraken threw 2 to second base, both weak, one hoppers. one hurt badly as the throw beat the runner trying to steal & runs scored.
dj at third - throwing error that led to a run & a mental error that led to a run - instead of standing on 3rd base waiting for gardner's weak throw, dj moved up towards second causing the runner to be safe.
positive note - looks like the lower part of yankees lineup will contribute - troy & dj.
the deep/talented lineup got deeper.
hurts not beating weak oriole team.

All true. I'm afraid Sanchez is going to be a defensive liability all year. He had better hit or he will find himself sitting on the bench.

Too early to make a judgement on Sanchez' defense. He looked more comfortable handling pitches. Hope the hits start to fall. He's not in the lineup for his defense.
