Yankees - 2018
Lets compare this team to the 98 team. Yeah I know it will be hard to repeat that 114 win season, but just for fun.

Through 44 games:
They were 34-10, this team is 31-13

Through 59 games:
They were 46-13, this team would have to go 15-0

Here is where I think this team could catch them.
Through 70 games:
They were 51-19, we'd have to go 20-6
I think this team is capable of doing that.

I'll stop there for now.
The 98 team finished 114-48, and they did it despite taking their foot off the gas pedal for a few weeks (they were 12-16 from August 19 through September 16, before ending the regular season with 7 straight wins). This team may come close only because they will probably have to keep going for it, with Boston on their heels (I still think both teams will fall well short, though).

In fact, whoever wins the AL West might be at a huge advantage come playoff time. The AL Central champion will probably win around 85 games, so they'll be the three seed, which means they will get the second best division champ. The Yankees and Red Sox may very well meet in the ALDS (division champ with best record vs. Wild Card winner).

In fact, the AL East Wildcard team might even be at a disadvantage in the one game playoff. The Yankees and Red Sox may go all out to beat each other. If the Angels or Astros pull away in the West, then the other is probably assured the Second Wild Card with no chance to move up, and could set up their pitching accordingly. That's all a long way away, though.

Good post, Right now they are the most exciting team in Baseball!

Sanchez can sure hit, but he must be tired this morning from chasing all those balls that got away.

He is not a catcher he is a retriever. Puts the moniker backstop for the catcher position. Is it legal to put on a shift putting an infielder behind the catcher with the tying or lead run on third late in a game? All that said he is a great hitter and glad to have him.

We have one of them crazy games in Texas. 11-10
Didi hit his 1th, Gleyber is on fire hitting another , Judge hit a 471ft bomb, and Neil.

Got 2 inning to do something, with 3, 4, 5 due up in the 8th.

Now can the pitching shut it down?

This bullpen has been somewhat of a disappointment so far, this year.

Case in point: David Robertson has not had a good season to this point, yet he is in no danger of losing his job, because no one else has stepped up, and taken it.

Bird returning from what seems like years on the DL, but what are they thinking demoting Torreyes?

I was a bit surprised by that and think he'll be up hear again soon enough. But at this point Gleybar can play SS if needed, Walker can play 1b/3b/2b and has a better bat and Austin can be play 1b/dh against lefties, even filling in in the OF on occasion.

Part of this may be showcasing Austin too. If they need a starter and Austin continues to hit with power he'll have value to other teams, and perhaps enable you to package him and a few other good prospects without having to sacrifice one you really want to keep.

And with Bird's health situation there is always a chance he is back injured in a few weeks in which case the Walker/Austin platoon makes sense.

torreyes will be back in majors soon.
yanks going with extra pitchers instead of offensive sticks. torreyes paying the price for talented sticks, poor pitching.
3 of last 4 games showed weakness of pitching staff. its sevy and the sticks.
boone went a few batters too long with cc, perhaps because he believed no one else could put out the fire.
i thought when trout took his 3rd at bat on saturday, they should have walked him. count already at 2 & 0.
tough break with 2nd baseman dropping throw that might have been double play. game was over with that error.
yanks on pace to set team/mlb home run record. young & talented.
#99 - multi threat - power, bavg, on base %, arm, leg, sells tickets/shirts. boone looking to run more & more.

My guess is Tyler Austin is being showcased. If Bird proves healthy, Austin will be traded.

Long term, Torreyes and Walker are your infield reserves.

How does Bird prove he is healthy? Just for the moment maybe, until his next potential calamity. Would love to see a pitching match-up between the Met's Vargas and the Yank's Gray. Would expect a football score if not a basketball score.

Ive been really impressed with Austin. Can field and hit. Yanks overloaded with talent. Need to trade for a pitcher, but concerned about giving up future stars. I would not trade gems for mediocre pitching.

I'd package Frazier (no room for him in the outfield), Austin (same problem at 1st, Walker could plat 1st too), and a pitching prospect for a top pitcher on a team that is selling.
Probably won't have any takers until a week or 2 away from the deadline.

I agree on Austin, but not Frazier. Gardner could be gone after this season, and personally, I'm not sold on Hicks. In any event, it's going to take a haul to get someone of value.

today's use of pitchers could be the boilerplate for the playoffs.
starter goes 5 then 4 relievers, one inning each.

Hamels is an option with a no-trade and will be available.

Bumgarner is the wildcard. There is an argument that it makes perfect sense for the Giants to rebuild and shop him, and he would be the absolute perfect fit for the Yanks. It would take a prospect-laden deal but the Yanks have plenty of that to deal.
