Xavier - 2nd Game

Really big win with Obekpa contributing nicely, Pointer all everything, and DLo clutch. Off night for Phil with nothing from Amar and Branch but Jordan helping when needed. Great to win against a good team that just destroyed Butler and was hot. Also shows Johnnie's can win even when some guys are off.

Just finished going through the messages after getting back from a great game. I was surprised to see everyone describe our favorite warrior DLo as clutch without one person mentioning that he was almost the goat. That play was worse than Hoopers last year if we had lost. He also can't be getting himself in foul trouble so often with bad fouls. Still love the balls he has in making those 3s though.

Branch had a key play where he caused a Xavier walk when SJU was on a run. Greene hit another clutch 3 and Oblockpa and SirDom were so intimidating down low.

As far as the spread was concerned, anytime a team is laying 1 1/2-110 or -125 on the money line I am taking money line every time, worked out on this occasion. Obviously I was right when I said that this scared the crap out of me. I'm much more confident in the Gtown game on Senior Day than I was on this game.

I thought Harrison's grit and determination won this game when it was destined to be a frustrating loss. He was hacked on that TO, but that was fine as he returned the favor by tossing stainbook to the floor during frantic final seconds. If stainbook was on his feet he would have had that rebound and put back and we'd be crying over it.

Either Stainbrook flopped or he is the softest 300 lb. guy ever. Not only was he not on his feet for the rebound, he was in the way asMyles Davis was coming around for the shot. I sense that he threw Davis' rhythm off just enough to cause him to miss an easy 15 footer.

He did not flop. Harrison got him off balance and put him on the floor. He got back up but it was too late to get position to get the ball. Check out the replay - that's how I viewed it.
During the live action I was too busy high fiving Mike Maher.

This thread (game) is going really well. Last 8-9 pages (minutes) might be the best we've had in 2015 thus far.

TIMEOUT! TIMEOUT! TIMEOUT! WE'VE GOT TO GET A TIMEOUT HERE!

:silly:

Great win by the team last night. That was about as ugly as you can play and still win. Not many times any team is going -20 on the boards AND giving up 46% from 3 and still winning. But we - and specifically SDP - make the extra plays defensively to cover those things up. +11 steals, +9 blocks, +12 TOs. Those are insane numbers, and mostly comes back to elite effort...even when things aren't going our way. We were due to win one of these types of games late.

Cannot wait for Saturday.

Harrison hooked him with the right arm and pushed a bit but tre is no way he "threw" Stainbrook down with the force that it would have taken for him to hit the floor like that. Too often, guys would rather flop and try to get a call rather than play solid defense through the contact.

Also, imagine if it was Obekpa who took an opponent down the way Stainbrook took him down at the buzzer. Everyone would be calling him and our team a bunch of thugs. Just good tough play in a close and very important game.

I was privileged to watch second half with my son in great seats behind our bench at the invitation of the great JPM 114 & his wonderful buddy Tony. Great game & hoops discussion. Will be back to my roots in 114 for our GTown win. :)

We can agree to disagree on the flop versus non flop, but I think we both see it as a play off the ball that helped out the johnnies

I agree with you in the final play. Johnnies have a bad rap in that regard while other teams get benefit of doubt. But I say state that as a fan

We were wondering where you went, but we knew you had to be in the building. I was hoping you were recruiting the euro kid.

Maybe this should be on an Amir thread...but mlb.com has him at number two as sleeper player of the year...and he's now on Cincinnati's 40 man roster.

114 was well represented in the noise dept last night

You deserve a seat on the bench Paultzman since you do so much work for the program in the recruiting department. :)
Watching the replay now in fast forward. The fans behind the announcers with the great kids I'd yourseves.

Agree that it was at least partially a flop, no way with the weight difference Stainboy goes down like that. I keep watching the replay with a buddy from work and I see it as a flop and he doesn't. I am a bit biased though.

I haven't seen a replay of the DLo turnover but some other people are saying he was fouled as well. I didn't notice a foul live but I was pissed that he made a bonehead move by stopping instead of continuing towards the basket. Took some years off my life.

The only thing I can add to this thread is a picture of the reason we stayed in this game and without whose defense we lose by double digits:

I saw the DLo turnover at the end as a foul. It was somewhat vindicated when the refs basically let the game play out and didn't call us for a foul on Xavier's last possession. We won, so it's a bit of a moot point, but overall I thought the refs did a decent job last night.

Reffing and fans reaction to refs are funny. I thought the refs did a terrible job because they called two different games. The 1st half they let everything go and then called everything in the 2nd half. Now, they called it both ways for both teams each half so in that sense I agree with you.

And we won the first half going away.. and lost the second. With our unusual style, the refs and how games are called will to a large degree and more than usual, determine how we do in games and how far we go in the tourney.
