Who do you think the staff will sign next?

So i just realized that Cheick Diallo has a twitter (although he's not active) but in his last tweet around a month ago he asked fans if he should reclassify to 2014.

I really hope he does that

I think we have a much better chance at him if he stays to '15.

From everything I know, he has never even been on our campus. And, we'd have more time to establish a relationship with him. I expect us to have a successful year this season and if we're able to have him visit at a big game at MSG, that bodes well for us.

And if Obekpa shows a lot of improvement this year, that would give Diallo more reason to come here. Possibly using the Whitesell factor saying we have this great big man coach.

Plus, we could also grab one of his '14 OSNA teammate this year.

I think this year is like a blank slate for us. We're being picked 6th and 7th because no one realizes how good we are. We lost countless games last year because we had no offensive gameplan, D'Lo was suspended, Orlando was denied, Gift was redshirted, Branch was hurt, terrible PG play and no outside shooting. Every single area was addressed this spring/summer.

I think Lavin's playing with house money right now. He just has to let the dust settle on the IW fiasco that made him look kind of foolish. But I see this playing out a lot like the 2010 season.

I have too politely disagree about Lavin being to made look "kind of foolish" in the IW "fiasco". I think he came out smelling like a rose. Refusing to hire Tiny in order to get IW was publicly put out there by Tiny. Taking the high road is not being made to look foolish. The fact that Lavin tried to attract IW (even if IW was "using" him against SHU) was not a bad thing. It almost worked from all accounts. Being able to show the basketball world he would not "stoop" to shaky moral actions (legal or not) ends up painting Lavin and by connection SJU-in a very positive light. Just MHO.

Good post. But I disagree with you on your statement about Lavin playing with house money. He is not, at least not with us fans. The national media gets bits a pieces about this team. But for all of us how follow this team closely know the talent is there to be a top 3 in the conference, and a tourney team. Make no mistake, I am very pro-Lavin, and I beileve the folks here getting thier underpants twisted over recruiting are foolish.

But I expect a very good season this year. I expect this team to rise a become one of the linchpin programs of the new BE, pure and simple. With the talent Lavin has brought in, and will continue to bring in (not to mention adding a very capable assistant), it would be aiming very low to think differently.

House money.

Despite the fact that Lavin was basically "set up" by Tiny Morton and IW's mom, the fact remains that Steve Lavin just hosted one of the top SGs in the nation and told him that he didn't need him.

He didn't need him to be the face of the program. He didn't need him to save the program. He didn't need him to come in and start as a freshman.

If he were to come aboard, he was going to be a luxury, not a necessity.

That's house money. Basically gambling with your bankroll because you already covered what you came in with.

He'll have 3 scholarships to use in the Spring of a season where most of us expect to be ranked and make the NCAA tourney.

Let this thing play out before we try to label this thing as disappointing or a failure.

He is recruiting with house money. But he isn't coaching this season with house money. We need some success.

Mid-season transfer list in December could be some nice Christmas shopping. The transfer would only miss a handful of mostly meaningless games.

By December we very likely will.

You think someone is leaving?
Care to share?

No info, but it seems to be the norm in college basketball now. I can't imagine everyone will be happy with a full roster of very talented kids. I won't even care to guess, because it doesn't seem fair to the kids and for the first time there isn't a kid on the roster whose departure wouldn't upset me.

I see no reason to have to integrate another player in the middle of the season when expectations are so high. This is different than having a transfer who is practicing with the team and joining when he becomes eligible like Jamal Branch did.

It would actually be the exact same thing. The player would have to sit out the rest of the season (practicing with the team) and then the same thing for the first handful of games the following season. Around December 15th they would eligible to play in games. Branch was a true frosh when he transferred...a soph or junior transfer could be even better.

No, he's talking about someone doing exactly what Branch did. I don't think the NCAA has ever considered granting immediate eligibility to a December transfer, nor should they.

Only if they would graduate in December and then continue with a major not offered by their previous school.

Too soon!

I think the staff is keeping tabs on the JUCO trifecta of Chandler-Morris-Wood. The reality, as hard as it may be for some to accept, is that there is a good chance either Wood or Morris could be just as good as Whitehead will be his first two years. Morris played at a top high school and will have two years of college experience under his belt. Wood played two years at Bridgton and will also have two years of college (1 year of actually seeing the court).

I think you're right but we need a couple of "bigs" that can play to replace Sanchez and Gift
The only "big" left after this season is Obekpa
I'm not sold on Jones being a major contributor in the future based on his performance last season nor do I see him getting much playing time to develop this year
If the staff believes that he has a bright future, it might be a good idea to redshirt him this season to give him 3 more years of eligibility

I would not be in favor or redshirting anyone. We have a solid team, you never know what will happen- injuries etc. Let's go with this team and shoot for the stars. An NCAA championship. After that we will have recruits knocking at Lavin's door.

Got it. Finding another player the quality of Branch would be great.

Transfers go where they are guranteed playing time, unless you are a pf who thinks Jakarr is going pro, we aren't that appetizing of an option.
Maybe there's a big out there who thinks he can get playing time with Sanchez/Gift leaving. But this isn't the same as when we didn't have a pg and picked up Branch midseason.

I think a young transfer FR or SO might be more likely to wait for PT. We are loosing a lot next year.
