What will it take to salvage this program

I don't think so.  This is not 2001 when he was just let go by the Celtics.  At that point he was young enough and his college reputation still well intact that he could pick any job that opened.  He was thisclose to taking the Miami Hurricanes job.  They thought they had him.  Before he decided on Louisville.

Only he could answer that but I do believe NYC is something at this stage in his life and career is important to him.

That was not true all the time.

Simply put I just don't think he would go anywhere at this point even if the job was a great job.

It it gets to the point where SJU will consider hiring Pitino I am sure a bunch of other jobs he would rather have will have gotten to that point as well so the point is really moot.

Whether that's a condemnation of the system or SJU ineptitude I am not sure.
I think Pitino would take this job over just about another other opening in college basketball, and let me add,
for less money. He is back home, he would be back in Big East where it all started for him, and there is no bigger reclamation project in all of college basketball than our moribund program. Not to mention he'd being doing it on the biggest stage there is, and in "the world's greatest arena". If he succeeded here, it would make for a Hollywood ending to his HOF career. Of course, sadly, it will never happen.

Regarding Pitino, I do agree with Monte.  Rick is like "must see tv".  St. John's games at the Garden would immediately become an event for the casual Manhattan yuppies.  It would, of course, energize the die-hards and jump start recruiting.

I am not necessarily advocating for the move, but it's hard to deny it would be energizing and I have no doubt it would be a fiscal win for St. John's.  Rick is one interesting dude.

Here's a brief history of redmen.com and coaches:

Despite having his best season at sju in year 6, getting an NIT bid, posters here were rooting for Robert's to lose down the stretch so he could be fired.  Some advocated coming to games to root against him.

Lavin, year 2, after resurrecting our program in year 1.  Diagnosed with cancer, after missing the early part of the season with surgery and treatments, he came back briefly but was fatigued.   He took rest of season off.  Some very prominent users accused him of exaggerating his illness because the team was so bad.  By year 5, posters on here were bashing his recruiting efforts, saying he had not been recruiting at all here.  His restaurant choices were fodder for some very prominent users.

Mullin was trashed almost from the beginning, despite having a barren roster.    The personal attacks on his character were incessant, even as his brother was dying of cancer, something that was not public knowledge till after his older brother died.

Then Anderson was hired and for 2 years the people bashing him now sang his praises.  Those same people claimed absurdly for a very long time that we were on track to win the BET when our quarterfinal game was halted at halftime.    These same experts sang Anderson's praises in year 2 after he took 2 stars and a bunch of 2nd string players to a 4th place finish and coach of the year.

Now all a sudden CMA can't coach or recruit.   In game decisions, who plays who doesn't is scrutinized (from hindsight mind you)

If you guys have your way, you will drive out another coach,  an Ad, maybe a president.

Of course there are bipolar comments to be patient, interwoven with vile criticism.

You guys speak of redmen.com as a great community when many of you in the nyc area have yet to set foot into CA or msg in years.

Then you guys proclaim how the school should spend money, not a dime of which you've ever contributed.

You complain about how expensive a game or tickets are, but how many of you responded to the $10 ticket offer this week?  I even had a fistful of tickets to give away yesterday and none of you could get off your asses and away from the tv remotes.

some of you, not by any means most of you, have serious issues.   You're fans of winning, not supporters of our teams, programs, or school.

Many of our fans aren't in position either to buy tickets or provide support.   I get that 1000% and there was a time when I split my tickets 3 ways with family and still really couldnt afford it.

Even if you decided not to come and support the team but could that's your own damned choice.

But if your going to criticize the people that go come out and support the team, guys like jsj, panther, and many many others on here,  please shut the hell up.  this stupidity hurts our program and is embarrassing, and has encouraged social media slobs to attack players. coaches and administrators on twitter.

Beast-
When you sign a contract to coach, a multi-million dollar contract at that, you are open to criticism on anything related to the team and it’s performance, as well as the roster you build.

It took him six years to get to his best season: 17-16.

He had no clue how to use his own players.

Can't remember if it was game programs or fundraising materials (maybe both), but when talking about Norm's coaching record, the school added his record as an assistant under Self to fluff Norm's skimpy win total, with no mention of what those numbers really were. It was pretty pathetic.

Of course fans can critique a coach's performance. In fact I was critical of Robert's ability. However, my point was fans here openly rooting for losses and failure.

As for Lavin, questioning his cancer is way over the line. How he dressed and where he ate dinner way over the line.

Expressing little sympathy for Mullin's family illness is just low. The same people would likely take legally allowed FMLA should that happen to them. One poster on here was allowed to call Chris a "POS" because he wasn't present at the statue unveiling. Funny, I was there, so were a lot of posters here, but that guy wasn't.

What we have lost, perhaps fueled by our social culture and covid isolation is civility towards coaches. Staff and players trying to do the best job they can. It's sad actually

I will say this: the overwhelming majority of those present at CA last night came away with a very different opinion of the game, and the direction of our program,  from our tv viewing audience here.

Really terrific post!  Embarrassingly, I felt like you were talking to me as I’ve posted some of the things you mentioned.  I’ve done it from a misguided place of love, a sentiment I’m sure many of us have felt  in the heat of frustration.

What will it take to salvage this program ?

The answer is pretty simple.

St. John's greatly offended the spirits of nature and basketball gods when it changed the basketball sacred name "Redmen" for "Red Storm" in 1994–95 school year.  Since the change in name the overall performance of the St. John's men's basketball team had been disappointing.

With that background I believe the only alternative to right the terrible wrong committed is to have President Shanley, an ordained Catholic Priest perform a public Exorcism to expel the evil demons that haunt the once proud St. John's men's basketball program.

It's funny but I don't obsess on this subject. I think it's just fueled by ignorant boredom by retired old guys and younger working guys who are posting when they should be working.

Repetitively repeating Pitino is like old men with no contemporary awareness drooling over sharon stone in 2022. Pitino is way past his prime and to repeatedly utter his name show how little our fans really know about how to deliver a winning program , no matter how much they rail.

It's much like the Repole argument. There are far more generous donors to st. Johns and yet you would think he was the only possibility. He has lost interest in the program and doesn't even live in the area any more.

Pitino could be past his prime but he is still better than any coach we've ever had. Iona 18-3 and you talking bout him being past his prime? Well whatever he is it's a heck of a lot better than what we have and have had. Keep telling everyone on the board how they should think and act and insult other posters because there is a segment on here who lap it up and thank you for your preaching.

Thanks for the compliments.   There are people that are reasonable and believe we are on the right path.   You are obviously disenchanted.  All I can say is if you feel insulted you probably should, and if you feel insulted, you should feel ashamed.

Pitino has done no better than Tim Cluess did (which obviously elevated the program tremendously).   Come chirping when Pitino wins an NCAA game.  Cluess got to the dance 8 times in 10 years and finished first the other two years.   High bar for Pitino.   No one is debating whether Pitino is a great coach - without cheating he is one of the best of all time.  Caught cheating, he can't really be considered that.

Hey Beast I should come chirping when Iona wins IONA wins a T game? How about St J never winning one in last 20 years or reaching semis of BET in 20 years? And all you do is chirp! Telling me how I should feel. You are a bigger blowviator than even Alec Baldwin so blow it out your blow hole. No need for a warning because I am done addressing the Proselytizing Preacher.

CraggM@stjohns.edu   put a red white check in.
Pitino chose a MAAC school where an NCAA bid is a layup because of what Cluess did.   Let's see him build a ranked team before proclaiming him the savior of this program.   I really don't care one bit what you think, and am not going to get into a pissing match online.   If you want to discuss further, PM me and don't blow up the thread and site.

Come on Beast, everyone knows that the 2 greatest coaches in the history of college basketball  built their dynasties larger by illegal payments,  etc to players. And I know you're smarter than to think that our beloved program's  cheating is limited to paying Abe Keita a few hundred bucks. You ever see the kinds of cars our kids have driven? You ever take a class with a basketball player? Come on now, let's be real here. Pitino has done plenty of things wrong, but let's not act like we are holier than thou. As for your comment that "There are people that are reasonable and think we're headed on the right path...", well I know plenty of reasonable and "unbiased" people who do not think that we're headed in the right direction. Fed up, like many of us, but a diehard fan and extremely reasonable. Not thinking that we're heading in the right direction doesn't make someone "disgruntled", "angry", "not a true fan", etc etc etc etc So stop with the denigrating of posters who don't think along the same lines as you.

Monte, we can disagree and I still consider you a friend, but i really think if you filtered out the posts where you say "but I still am willing to wait and and give CMA a chance"  there's a ton of negativity and hostility.    I think it would be hard for you to believe, but I seriously doubt that during the Looie and Lapchick years there was a scintilla of dishonesty.   I seriously doubt Mahoney.   Fran, I don't know.   Jarvis - too self absorbed to do that, plus he proclaimed he wouldnt deal with AAU coaches who hand their hands out (the easiest road to corruption.   Norm?  come on.   Lavin... do you think so?  I kind of doubt it.  Chris - no way.   CMA - no way.

In terms of Lavin, there was one guy I won't name that he banished and told him he didn't want him hanging around.

This becomes never ending Monte.   He paid players BIG TIME, conspiring with sneaker companies with vested interest.   His teams hired hookers for recruits - just about the sleaziest thing a coach could do.    The the back of the restaurant things.

What I really don't get is that you gamble, and guys I know who bet would never trust a cheater like that.    He broke every big rule in his thirst to win.  What are his limits?    You want to win like that, fine.  Good luck.   But it isn't happening here and shouldn't

Bamafan doesn't seem reasonable at all in his reaction to Beast. Beast posts intelligent comments and disagreements. Bamafan seemed to throw a tantrum when Beast disagreed with him and gave his reasons.
And no, absent some actual basis for believing it, I don't assume SJU coaches have been corrupt.

Guys, please don't let this get out of hand. I don't have time to go through and edit the thread and will just delete it.

Bamafan happens to be an extremely reasonable poster.
Fed up, like many of us, but a diehard fan and extremely reasonable. Not thinking that we're heading in the right direction doesn't make someone "disgruntled", "angry", "not a true fan", etc etc etc etc So stop with the denigrating of posters who don't think along the same lines as you.
I don't assume, I know. For a fact. Believe it or dont, don't make a damn bit of difference to me
