@West Virginia, Fri., Dec. 1, 7p, ESPN-2

Agree. The WV game looks tougher because it's on the road but we can't let down against anyone. Even Hofstra at UBS. Fordham at the Garden looks like the softest. Anyway no reason we can't win all four. The Xavier game at home looks important as well as we play at UCONN next. If we could end the year 9-2(1-1) I would be thrilled. Meant 10-3(1-1)
I think this team can definitely lose to Hofstra or Fordham on a bad night early in the year.

WV is just a huge game. Even if they are bad this year the road win would reward would reward us handsomely in the metrics. Win this game and I think it puts us on the right side of the way to early bubble.

We’ll probably bounce back and forth a few times though. You just never want to be in a situation where you have to sweep teams in the Big East. It’s so hard to do.

That's why Rick demands defense.

You can have a bad shooting night, one bad defensive night is unacceptable. Shut down the opposition every freaking game.

Every ooc game from here on out is a huge game, I predicted 1 loss in ooc, so to me 3 losses would be a bust.
You gotta have the mind set that one slip up is NOT ok.

I gotta think the Xavier game is a must win also, good chance they'll lose at UConn, they absolutely cannot start this season 0-2.

We could sweep DePaul and G-Town, and maybe Butler.

Watching Bellarmine go toe to toe with WV right now. They don’t communicate on D, are rail thin in the front court and their guards don’t protect the ball well. They are 346th in points scored and 344th in ppg. Slazinski at 6’9 is averaging a shade over 4rpg in 34mpg. Our depth and talent should win out easily across 40 minutes.

Would agree. I think the key will be to come down the stretch strong in which Case the RP factor will work to our favor

You know that Posh will really be up for both Butler games.
I'll b rooting for him but not his team. If that makes sense.
He really is a baller.

I consider Dayton the “slip up”. I’m also not convinced Michigan will be a top 25 team like people said.

I ultimately do think we win the rest of the way, the team looks a lot more cohesive from game 1 to now, plus we have Luis and the competition is less. But nothing should be considered a given (I’m sure Pitino will make them know that)
Michigan can beat or lose to any team given night. McDaniel is a wild man. The next time he sets his feet to shoot will be his first.

I agree on the sentiment later in the season, but Defense will be the last thing this team gets down. We’ve only seen a small fraction of Pitino’s defense this far.

I feel much better with Luis around and guarding the Slaz.

The way I see it, this team improves empirically. Losses to Pace, Michigan, and Dayton are building blocks in correcting the things that prevent you from becoming a good team. In other words, losses in this case are ironically part of the process to improve.

If we simply look only at losses, Pace was a nightmare, thankfully an exhibition, Michigan much better but showed our weaknesses especially on defense. Dayton a much better performance against a pretty decent team but we lost down the stretch due to a porous defense.

Between those losses, we've seen an improvement game to game. Unlike CMA's OOC schedule to fatten a record with a weak SOS, we are witnessing some of CRPs best coaching. Even 5th year seniors are being taught and corrected individually. As a unit, this team is slowly transforming into what I believe will be Big East ready in one month.

The league is so damned tough at the top half, weak at the bottom, and in a few days have seen improvements that make sky is falling 9th place BE predictions seem silly.

No predictions from me except to warn that mopping up against the bottom 4 teams in the league will still require we amass some important quad 1 wins against the top 6.

Fun stuff to watch, and if i didn't have season tix, I'd be snapping up as many cheap stubhub tix as I could. Even the weaker OOC games have been good fan experiences, and eagerly look forward to each next game.

Obviously would have been a great opportunity with no downside if we were playing who everyone thought West Virginia was going to be before everything went down there. No major downside now (wouldn’t be a “poison pill” type of bad resume loss) except as folks have said West Virginia is probably going to be a bottom 3 team in the Big 12. If SJU is on the bubble and someone on the committee is looking for reasons to ding them you don’t want them to be able to say “Their only true non-conference road game was against this sort of bad West Virginia team and they lost.”

It’s all perception though because if we win it’s just as easy to say, “well they won their only true road game against a power conference opponent.” And all the metrics love road wins against almost anybody so we’d be sure to see some sort of bigger than usual bump than from a home win. So upside isn’t what it once was but still feels important.

I've watched WVa last 3 games, I'm very confident we handle business. We have too many bodies and I think have too much offensive firepower for them. They have 8 players on the roster, 6 get major minutes. Our staff know Slazinski and his game who leads them in scoring. Very much looking forward to Joel Soriano vs Jesse Edwards.

Slazinski should thank Pitino for letting him go. At St. John’s he’s our 7th man, averaging single digits, at WV he gets to be the star for a year, even if on a sucky team, and audition for a good euro league contract.

Nonetheless, can be sure Slaz is taking extra shots in practice this week. But if St Johns is a legit tourney team, this needs to be a victory vs a WV squad likely to finish with a losing record

I hope we don't hear this song at the end of our game there in Podunk-ville. I heard their City Hall just installed indoor plumbing and the front row seating carries a full set of teeth (combined). Super hard to solve murders in WV, all the DNA matches and there are no dental records. In WV the populace has more court dates, than second dates. Best pickup line in WV: "you're finer than a Bud truck pulling up to my trailer".

Seriously, historically visiting teams have had a hard time playing there. They have a frenzied atmosphere with a rabid fan base of partly drunk hooligans. If we pass this test it is a good sign for visits to the elites of the BE.

Remember West Virginia gave us Jerry West, Hot Rod Huntley, Rod Thorn and Kevin Pittsnogle. And Bob Huggins, let's beat them for the Catholics and Xavier Musketeers!

This season, with 3 losses, this early in the season, should help to keep our guys a little humble and their hat sizes within reason.

West Virginia also produced Coach John Niland in his stops between after URichmond and before UMichigan.
