Welcome Mikey Dixon

Well, I hope this works out. Personally, I am disappointed to use a scholarship on another small guard. In fact, this kid is beyond small. At 160 lbs, he is now our lightest player.

I love Ponds, Mussini and Lovett, but getting smaller at the guard position was not on my wish list.

Boys versus men gets old quick.

Not saying this will work out, but by the time he suits up he will likely play with Ponds, Simon & a more physical guard like Luther Muhammad.

It does feel better looking at it in those terms.

At the end of the day, I am just not so excited about this one. Would love to see him surprise me.

Jaden Daly from Daly Dose of Hoops here...finally found the way into this forum. It's probably on the other board already, but here's the Dixon piece in case you haven't seen it yet:

Stay tuned for more SJU info in the offseason and of course during the year as well. For those who know me already, thanks for the support...for those who don't, I look forward to helping tell the stories of my alma mater (Class of 2008)

I'm pleased with Matt A's talent evaluation thus far so I look forward to this kid.

I'm just happy to have players. Plus, Dixon looks like a good one. And before we get all angry at small guards let
us remember.

Showtime was 6'0'' 168
Man Hatten was 6'1'' 174
Omar Cook was 6'0'' and admittedly a stout 190.
and my favorite non-Johnny point guard Andre Barrett was 5' 10'' 170 at the most.

Now 3 more schollies to fill!

Those are good players. But if you want to get over the hump and make a serious run, you need the muscle. The NCAA tournament is a man's game.

Beat me to the punch. Was going to ask: Exactly how many NCAA Tournament games did Showtime, Cook, Hatten, and Barrett lead their teams to?

Really surprised at the reactions on this board. No I guess I should not be and should be used to it now.
College is a guards game, and we had 4 this season 2 of which were very good. We add what should be a very good guard for next season and 1 of the 2 inferior players left. Going into next season we should have 3 very good guards and a solid 4th option.
We replaced a weaker player with what looks to be on paper a better player, with 3 years of eligibility remaining and who will practice with the team for a season.
We helped redistribute the classes , which is also important.
Does this mean we won't get a 6 8 rebounder or a 5th year power player, not at all. One has nothing to do with the other. But this was a very good pickup by the staff in my opinion for the long run. Bravo Matt.

Is Chris Mullin the coach of St. John's or is it Jenny Craig? :silly:

This team is guard heavy....don't really understand this signing. I am sure he is a good player but we have greater needs in other areas.

He will most likely be taking LoVett's spot when he leaves after next season.

Not overly exciting but we need guard insurance so I'll take it.

He picked us over Penn St. and UMass. Not exactly stiff competition. At least on paper, I'm not overly impressed so far. I thought the transfer game was Matt's forte. Then again, it's still early, and what do I know.

I'm confused. Don't we complain when mid major guards torch us and say how we wish we had players like them.
Now we get one and it's not good ?

He has a year and a summer to put on weight, and he's already 6'2, which would make him taller than Mussini, Ponds, and Lovett.

No player at SJU puts on weight

That is next years problem.....size is THIS years problem. This signing won't have an impact. I am sure we could fill a guard spot next year if needed.

They need to abandon the Marillac diet. :cheer:

Let me get this straight, we have room for more than one player so we should have passed on Dixon why? We either sign a big or we don't, getting Dixon is irrelevant to that outcome.

Quinnipiac transfer Mikey Dixon has committed to St. John's, source told ESPN. Averaged 16.5 points. Sit one, play three.

Cincinnati was his best offer...trust me, you're gonna like this kid. Remember Branden Frazier from Fordham? Dixon is very much like that.

I like the 86% from the FT line.

"Two MAAC coaches, speaking on condition of anonymity because Dixon hadn’t signed yet, had differing opinions. Both described him as a scoring guard, but one said he needs to get stronger and improve his decision-making to be a difference-maker in the Big East. The other compared him with former Iona College star A.J. English, a player who can score at all three levels — in the paint, from the mid-range and beyond the 3-point line."

Thanks Mr. P
Some will complain no matter what. MAAC Rookie of the year; led team
In scoring w some rebounding/assist skills; comes with a good attitude and has a year to observe and work out with the team...fills only one of THREE remains scholarships =
nice move :)
Thanks Matt!

So the only negative is his skinny build and was a freshman that need some to improve decision making.. sounds like a perfect candidate to sit a year, out on muscle, work out with the team.

And as SJ NYC points out
86% free throws :cheer:
