Welcome Matt Abdemassih

Welcome Matt and I guarantee I will never be able to pronounce or spell your last name so I will just refer to you as Matt A

It's actually easy. I found this on the Iowa State site: Matt Abdelmassih - pronounced Abdel-Massey

Now is it May-her, or Mayor, or Marr or Ma-her? :) :) :)

If I had a dollar for every person that pronounced my name right in school I'd have 5 bucks

well...
let's see, he could say to Diallo..

" I was telling you to go to Iowa State because it would be good for your future career. Of course, I'll be leaving to go to St John's because...Well, it would be better for my future career, what with Mullin there and all the focus on the renaissance of a national power, but you do what ever you think best."

A recruiter is essentially a salesperson. You sell what's good about the organization you are representing. Yea, while it presents a problem to take your prospects and now try to sell them on your new employer's products (SJU), it's done all the time. One of the most important aspects of selling is relationships - this is why a Calipari can continually move from one place to another and have success. He is selling himself as someone a kid wants to be associated with, not necessarily the school. Matt A. of course is in a different position, but once a relationship is developed, he can contact his recruits, and pitch to them the idea that Mullin is interested in the kid, and NYC would be an awesome place for him to come to, and play for an NBA HOFer in the media capital of the world.

I'm going to guess that the Americanized version is closest to Mar, but the subtle correct pronunciation would include 2 syllables.

@TravisHines21: Hoiberg: "I’m really happy for Matt. It’s his home. He gets to go back to his alma mater. It’s a special, special place to him."

@TravisHines21: Hoiberg: "Even when I would go out and recruit with Matt in New York, it was like a kid in a candy store. He absolutely loves it out there."
Comments say a lot about Hoiberg as well as Matt

Sent you a PM.

It's really exciting to see a recent SJU alum hopping on the chance to come home to build something great here. He's made the extraordinary climb from a SJU team manager to a highly respected assistant. Maybe Avon will be named part of Mullin's staff also. :)

I love the fact that both members of the staff are SJU grads....they both love the school and i know that they will work their butts off to bring success to the program.....first time it feels like this is not a stepping stone or a pit stop for the coaches but a destination.....

The correct spelling of the name is Abdelmassih which means "Servant of the Messiah," a Christian (often Coptic Christian name).Interesting because over 90% of people whose surname begins with Abdel are Muslims.

Welcome Matt. Great to have you on board!.

Wow, that is the perfect name since I consider Mullin to be the Messiah.

Welcome home, Matt. I like how things appear to be moving quickly. Lord knows we need to get to work for now and the long term. Gives me confidence that St. John's and Chris Mullin understand that we need to act decisively to seize the positive momentum and good feelings to start a turnaround TODAY.

From Newsday:
The word of the day was "surreal.'' Mullin used it in a statement issued by St. John's. "Obviously, it's a surreal experience coming home and returning to St. John's University,'' Mullin said. "This is a role I have been preparing for all my life.''

Welcome aboard, Matt.

There hasn't been a single time over the years, watching Mullin sit at a game next to Coach C., or at some SJU event, that I didn't consciously think of him coming back here to coach. In one swift move, the enthusiasm meter for SJU has exploded. More than exciting, it just feels right.

He's ready to run through a brick wall.

Per Zags:

“I know that at the end of the day the blueprint that we had [at Iowa State] might not be able to work exactly the way, but I do feel the one thing that I do have is that blueprint,” Abdelmassih said, speaking generally. “We inherited a program that wasn’t where it was supposed to be and coming into this situation, we’re going to get it to that Top 10 program that we really strive to be in, where this program deserves to be. And that blueprint will be executed as soon as you guys are done with me.”

And:
Abdelmassih knows New Jersey is loaded, probably more loaded than New York with talent.

“We don’t want the kids to leave the city, we don’t want them to leave New Jersey,” he said. “We do want them to leave New Jersey, we want them to come to St. john’s. We want the local kids to come to the Big East powerhouse that we know this should be.”
