Welcome David Jones

Wheeler DNP-CD
Didn’t really start getting big mins until into BE
Wusu had ball at end of games and half way too frequently. In fact what was deal taking Posh off the ball?
Needed to get more out of Soriano as well

-Wheeler was playing bad that's why he got a DNP. Did you watch the games before he got the DNP?

-Wusu also made a lot of plays that helped win games and was one of the top assist guys in the conference. That's why he had the ball in his hands.

-Like Wheeler, Soriano, was not great at the beginning of the season, took time for him to figure everything out.

And yes, they didn't make the tournament. Fell short. Julian makes a wide open 3 after the timeout in BE tournament (a play big time players have to make), maybe this whole conversation is different. Lot of what ifs about last season, a few games lost on last possession. But, let's not rewrite history trying to make it like CMA just had all this undeniable talent and did nothing with it. He had 2 proven guys and a bunch of unproven newcomers, didn't work out, coaches and players deserve responsibility for last season, time to move on.

Last season the big east was a well balanced league with most games decided in the last few minutes and this year it looks like it might be even more balanced. SJU was unable to perform at games end last year because Champ was not the same player he was the prior year, no one else stepped up to become the closer and the staff appeared lost In those last few minutes of games.
This season the newcomers are replacing last years Champ, not the prior seasons all league player and a half season of a productive Wheeler. I expect the backcourt will be able to create shots for the others on the court and Jones is the type of player who will get fouled taking it to the rim in crunch time. Next seasons team can’t be any worse than last years at crunch time so I expect better results even if they don’t secure a sharpshooter.

Maybe you weren't listening.

Agree, since the team didn’t sniff a post season tourney, the only way to go is up.

This is really a tremendous pick up. Good job to Anderson and staff with their best recruiting to date. 2 of the most impactful transfers and our first top 100 hs recruit since Ponds. I’ll sign up for that every year.

Jones really fits like a glove and even though we very obviously need to improve/add shooting I do like having a primary scorer whose scoring seems to be less dependent on his outside shooting. Interesting to see how he does without being Freeman-Liberty’s sidekick.

This addition very clearly raises the ceiling for the team but I still think where the ceiling and floor are will depend on what type of Curbelo shows up in Queens. If it’s hungry, focused, super freshman Curbelo we may end up being a national story. If it’s sloppy, scattered, too cool for school sophomore Curbelo (I know he dealt with the concussion but still) then we may be bad and dysfunctional. I’ll be happy with somewhere in the middle as long as that gets us into the tourney.

very good post

I'm cautiously optimistic that Joel is going to be really good this year as a player as much as a recruiter. He made marked improvements as the season went on. He has great hands. He's in the best shape of his life. And he slowly acclimated to the athleticism and toughness of the BE.

Zach article

Great read. Love what I heard from Jones, not worried about the NIL he'll worry about that later, he's just ready to play and do something special.

Huge pick-up. Him and Curberlo is the equivalent of adding two 5-star high school kids. Both have 3 years of eligibility!

We all loved JC, but we should also be honest about the significant frustration and concern over his play in a number of games last year. From the clips that I’ve seen of Mr. Jones, I think that, in comparison, we are going to see a much more aggressive player — and one that isn’t timid to take those last minute shots. While cautiously optimistic, I’m very excited.

I also agree with the sentiment that DJ and Curbelo could be pivotal in pushing the team over the hump in securing wins in close games. Last year, we all knew that we were in trouble whenever games got close late. I think we are going to be of a different mindset in ‘22-‘23.

Great article.

“Jones said he did discuss potential name, image and likeness opportunities with the St. John’s coaching staff, but it was far down the list of reasons he opted to come to Queens. As an international student in the country on a student visa, he has things he has to work out before making money off NIL. He doesn’t have any deals at the moment.”

Have to admit the student visa and the affects of and NIL could have on it never crossed my mind.

Need to keep the buzz going and again welcome Mr. Jones.

Technically no. He is probably on a f-1 visa and work is limited on campus work only and can only be part time work although there are a couple of exceptions to that rule.
Oscar Tshiebwe has been dealing with the same issue. Kentucky seems to have found a work around.
