I have no problem with Anderson's use of timeouts. He could have had a baker's dozen and the result would not have changed. Wbat is troubling is that nothing changed after the timeouts. In fact, nothing has changed from day 1. Jones still shoots long threes early in the shot clock, despite shooting under 30% from 3 his first 2 seasons. Posh seems to have regressed. It's not just his lack of touch, but questionable decision making, He is forcing it, which wasn't him the past 2 seasons. Curbelo took a fade away finger roll that was short by 5 feet. But it looked pretty until that point, which too often seems the point when he makes a move. Stanley with an attempt from 3?

College players need to be coached up. They need discipline. If that doesn't happen, you get a game like tonight. Based on the way the team looked tonight, they are going to get blown about by a number of Big East teams, especially on the road.

Should posters be happy with another non competitive performance? I would be more concerned if we had a fan base that just attributed to just a bad day instead of recognizing it as a negative pattern against competent competition. There has not been one quality win thus far for a team that sees itself as a tourney team.

Can the team improve, perhaps but there are glaring deficiencies which must be corrected to do so. And the real question is can these issues be corrected in time to salvage a bid to the big dance?
We will know more after the Xavier game. Let me see how we play and the result.

A few points after a night of reflection:

As I have said previously, and others have also noted, Posh and Cuberlo should play less together. I would start Posh and allow him to try to regain his freshman form as the best pure point guard in the conference. He would need to refocus on pass first and drive and dish or short/mid range shots, which he can make. He needs to abandon his 3 point shot propensity and the staff needs to press him on that.

The fact that is epidemic among these non-shooters that they continue to take ill-advised 3 point shots is indicative of a lack of discipline and a selfish attitude among the players to "get theirs". This is a coaching staff issue. Thye need to set the right tone and set the right team approach.

Curbelo reminds me of Kevin Willaims as a could-be super-sub off the bench. His helter skelter, frenetic style could be a good change of pace off the bench for instant offense, but he will need to shoot better and make better decisions.

As good as Soriano has been offensively, he needs help on the defensive end. I don't know what the deal is w/ Nywie, but I think he should be spotted in against bigger players as he is more defense oriented and might disrupt guys like Dixon better than Joel will. Stanley can play with either, and Nywie and Sorioano could be played together in a big lineup, sparingly, but as a mix and match. The staff seems enamored by the Soriano emergence to the exclusion of correctly utilizing all of the players available.

Storr should start. Period. He is maybe the best or second best offensive player on the roster, and despite his defensive lapses (I don't think he has been as bad as some think), he has huge upside and he needs to be played. I don't often speculate about portal potential, but if he is not respected and brought along and allowed to play.....

Wusu should have his role diminished to allow Storr more minutes. He was a surprise as a freshman but we have seen his upside and downside. He has limits, but staff seems to have him stubbornly as a favorite, good, bad and ugly. He also has to be told that he shoots too many 3s and he should concentrate on defense and opportunistic offense.

To me, Jones has been a perplexing player. He seems intent on hoisting 3s and he has shown that he can't make them consistently. He often takes ill advised shots early in the clock that kills momentum. His best role seems to be slashing, and playing around the basket. Staff needs to press him to do so.

The staff has some really nice tools to work with but seem incapable of utilizing them properly, or enforcing the discipline necessary to run structured offensive sets, or reel in ill advised shot making.

There are flaws here that are obvious. One source of solace is that Anderson teams (at least here) seem to play better as the season goes on. But, the staff can't afford to allow the season to devolve. This team needs to make the NCAA (seems doubtful, but it is still early). Overall, disappointing but not entirely surprising start to the conference schedule. Many have labored over the OOC schedule and that is obviously a culprit in not preparing the team for the competitiveness of the conference. But, the staff and its failure to use the talent it has to its optimum level seems to be the main issue here. Hard truth is that that may not be changeable, and therein lies the real issue for after this season. Not sure that StJ can attract a better coach at this point, going into 3 decades of near irrelevance.

You might not be able to learn how to develop an efficient offensive system over night, but you can enforce some standards re shot selection and patience. Can we at least start there. We don’t shoot at the rim well enough for how well we seemingly shoot our own foot.

These players are unreal, no matter what level anybody here played at, when you throw up a couple of clankers, , you really try to avoid shooting for a bit. Not at SJU, just keep firing away. That's 100% on the coaching staff for not getting them to understand that.
Playing 4 guards and a center doesn't cut it. If Soriano gets boxed out, there are no rebounds to be had. When Wusu is the 2nd talllest guy on the court, what kind of game are you playing?

It's become obvious over last 20 years that we do not have the resources to compete with the other Big East schools. Practice facility is great, historic Carnesecca only matters to old timers, being the road team at most games in MSG is embarrassing, B.E. caliber recruits will not come here, we give mid-major recruits the chance to play big time hoops (but not in the OOC games). Yes we find an acorn every 5 yrs or so but our decline is perpetual.

I concur wholeheartedly with this post. Your observations are accurate. Now we wait and see if the needed changes are attempted.

I like Posh.
Can’t shoot threes which would be ok but unfortunately the shooting guard can’t shoot threes either. In this day of basketball that is a huge problem.
What’s happening now is Posh is letting his lack of shooting affect his whole game.
The main problem is he is still taking the shots which other team is gladly giving him but not shooting them confidently, which is understandable as few are confident doing things they can’t outside of maybe Wusu.
The terrible outcome of this is we have a player who right now can’t make any shot on the basketball court. Hard to have a good offense while that is happening.
And Storr has to play big minutes.
Putting that at end of every post.

On the bright side, Joel was very good last night. He stayed in decent defensive position, lived up to his production numbers against a packed in defense. AJ Storr should be a high level contributor next year. He has to work on his defense, susceptible to blow by from shifty guards. His shot is decent enough to spread the floor on offense.

The fact that the staff seemed not to be aware that Storr was a significant offensive contributor when the team couldn’t find the basket tells you all you need to know about the staff.

If the Posh/Curbelo combination couldn’t outplay then starting back court of Freshman Armstrong and Archie Junior, what BE back court will they out play?
You all are dramatically overrating Storr’s contributions. He hit some shots early on but he would not have been a difference maker. Forgetting about his defensive liabilities, for the most part he cannot create his own shot and has only hit outside shots when open in the corner with his feet set.

He wasn’t the problem by any means and the numbers from a production standpoint are great. But when the game was still a game, their big out played ours.

Correct me if I'm wrong, because I was a bit distracted while watching, but wasn't our 1st half run done largely with Curbelo on the bench? Seems like we hit a brick wall shortly after he returned. As for the PT of our backcourt, Posh and Curbelo played 31 and 30 minutes respectively. Storr 18. I agree with all of you who say that Posh and Curbelo need to be spending less time on the court together, and Storr needs more minutes. I'll take my chances with his defensive deficiencies. We'll play plenty of teams who have players he can guard. Hopefully he becomes more adapt at positioning, etc, to make up for his lack of quickness. Hell, pro teams have shooters who lack quickness on D. At the same time, Posh needs to show that he's ready to fully take the reigns and run the show. So far he hasn't this year. Again, we have some talent. It's the coaches job to get those pieces to fit. Hopefully CMA can do that before the season gets away from us.

This... was going to start its own thread... but will just comment here... Posh... wtf happened...?

Was he ever a lights out shooter? No. But i no longer am confident in his ability to drive and make a lay-up. Saw some wild attempts this game as well... think there was a turn around fade-away mid-range J.... felt like that Ewing video - "Do you practice that shot?!?!?" lol

He is not even getting his "hustle" baskets, put backs etc...

Is it playing with Curbelo? Is it he lost Julian?.... What would you guys do with him- he obviously needs to be on the floor- but how would you guys utilize him on offense? Play him at PG- opposing guards will be able to sit back at the FT line when he has it top of the key... I was thinking have him run baseline, maybe curls at the FT line... Want to hear from some arm-chair coaches.

While I admire your insistence to spit in the wind, I mean you have to give credit to someone who will stick to his opinion no matter how dumb it is. With the backhand compliment out of the way, you may want to get checked out for some sort of head trauma

Curbelo was a no show tonight.
Posh was 10xs better a s freshman.
This is the end for CMA. This is not a tournament team and coach will get canned becasue of it.
Do you really think CMA will get canned if he misses tournament? I mean its on par and schedule with SJU practice since every 5 years we are going through a rebuilding phase.

don’t understand how CMA allowed multiple runs with no TIme Outs ....
what was curious to me was that he called time outs twice right before the mandatory TV timeout. I'm not sure how strategic that is.

We used to be a team with Posh attacking the rim and getting nice open looks from either Earlington, Champ, and others. That doesn't exist any more.

He wasn’t the problem by any means and the numbers from a production standpoint are great. But when the game was still a game, their big out played ours.
Joel got pushed around by Dixon all first half, just using his body. Joel did not respond in kind defensively against Dixon, gave him too much room to operate in my opinion. He needs to use his body more on a guy like Dixon.
Couldn’t bear watching second half!

You might not be able to learn how to develop an efficient offensive system over night, but …….

BUT you can over a 4 year period when it becomes clear that Anderson’s offense merely consists of 5 players running down the court as fast as they can to attempt to get an easy shot; when that fails then ANderson’s offense consisted of his 5 players passing the ball in a freelance- unscripted manner until someone chucks up a shot.

The 3 ball is an integral part of D1 college basketball and seemingly CMA has not adapted from What worked in 1990.
