The fact that the staff seemed not to be aware that Storr was a significant offensive contributor when the team couldn’t find the basket tells you all you need to know about the staff.

If the Posh/Curbelo combination couldn’t outplay then starting back court of Freshman Armstrong and Archie Junior, what BE back court will they out play?

When you play in a league like The Big East, your OOC schedule is supposed to be challenging enough to prepare you for league play. Even if you lose a couple of games to high quality opponents. Our OOC did not even come close to preparing us for league play.
Poor competition doesn't matter if you're a good team. We're not a good team.

Posh was atrocious tonight. Curbelo was pretty much non existent. The backcourt was a huge disappointment. Totally outplayed by a freshman and a scrub.

Call me a broken record but the backcourt of Posh and Curbelo is too small and too offensively challenged to play bigger and better offensive opponents.

By now we all know Anderson is a mediocre in-game coach but his teams also seem to lack focus on both ends of the court. It is pretty obvious by now that he is coasting to retirement with unspectacular recruiting and scheduling OOC opponents simply to pad his record rather than preparing his team. His teams will beat the cupcakes but lose to better opponents year-in and year-out. I predict he will be gone after this season unless he pulls a rabbit out of his arse.

So, other than mediocre coaching tonight, the loss can be summarized by the play of three starters: Jones, Curbelo and Posh. Jones just had a typical bad shooting game which happens to him periodically.
Posh and Curbelo were just atrocious in the backcourt.

Here is a snapshot from the 5:28 mark with SJU leading by 9 points:
5:28 Posh turnover
4:58 Curbelo missed jumper
4:07 Posh missed layup
3:34 Foul Curbelo
3:19 Posh missed layup
1:25 Posh foul
0:34 Posh missed 3 pointer
0:18 Posh foul

Second half begins with a Jones turnover and missed 3 pointer and at the 18:03 mark Posh misses a 3 point shot.

At that point the wheels fell off the bus because Anderson could not field a lineup that complemented both the offensive and defensive facets of the game.

Soriano got ZERO help all night against Dixon and yet still got another double double. He could have used the help of Stanley but this coach obviously doesn't practice that combination enough. The substitutions were again bewildering and in the last minutes of the game Anderson had the gang that couldn't make layups including Posh, Wusu and Curbelo.

This team has no leadership at present and Posh Alexander has regressed to the point where he needs to either start alone or come off the bench. Given tonight's performance, I would have him come off the bench until his in-game performance returns to his freshman level.
That is a sad indictment for both him and his coaches.

This was bad. No question about that. And this is our typical this team sucks after these kinds of losses. Can’t wait to see the mood if/when? We beat Xavier. Jekyll and Hyde continues.

Bad game all around, including coaching…Soriano and Storr are the only guys who had semblance of a decent game…don’t understand how CMA allowed multiple runs with no TIme Outs and the bad shot selection to persist all game long…team needs to watch more Villanova games and less DePaul games because that is what they looked like…all playground

Should posters be happy with another non competitive performance? I would be more concerned if we had a fan base that just attributed to just a bad day instead of recognizing it as a negative pattern against competent competition. There has not been one quality win thus far for a team that sees itself as a tourney team.

Can the team improve, perhaps but there are glaring deficiencies which must be corrected to do so. And the real question is can these issues be corrected in time to salvage a bid to the big dance?

The Johnnies got the lead as a team and then lost the game playing as individuals. The ball stopped moving on offense and they let Villanova settle down and get into a rhythm and neither of the two point guards were able to settle the team down and work patiently on offense. Tough loss.

Villanova players got where they wanted to go. They defended us well and packed the paint. Felt like we didn’t get an offensive rebound all 2nd half. It is settling in that we are not good and maybe finish 8th in the league. We are a highly flawed team by construction, good for a surprise win here or there, but not built to last. I wait all year for this team and this sucks

Yes, SJU has some good pieces, but fair to be concerned they may not fit. When so often you see many rushed shots, the isolation of our small guards, absence of half court offense and lack of patience and judgment it really hurts. The poor perimeter shooting is a given unfortunately, but not playing smart only exacerbates that void.

On coaching side, despite being so early, it also seems fair to question whether Mike can get it done and Dance this season with a group he praised as his best to date here a few months ago. Against Nova he did not appear to have answers nor judiciously use his time outs and right the ship when Nova made runs. Lastly, one wonders if MA has given this group too much latitude, resulting in a free lance game that in my opinion won’t cut it in BE and plays into the hands of the many smart coaches in the league.

Time will tell, but the tea leaves give me pause.

Anderson has shown time and time again that coaching is a problem for him and the Posh/Curbelo thing is 100% on him. It’s his job to figure it out. I’m not counting us out at all after 2 BE games because there’s definitely talent there, but Anderson has hundreds and hundreds of games under his belt. He can’t coach. It’s always a street game for us. Weave offense; hero ball. He can spot talent though, I’ll give him that for whatever that’s worth. But, the players are gonna have to figure it out.

For 14 minutes it looked like St. John’s was going to win inside the Pavilion for the first time since 1993. Then they took bad shot after bad shot and Villanova exploited their poor IQ.

Where was Mike Anderson to step in a stop the run? What is going on with Posh Alexander? This frustrating loss leaves doubt and questions as SJU still has much to prove.
