St. John’s next two games are against Villanova & Providence. Friars will be without their best player in Hopkins who unfortunately tore his ACL, and there’s a chance Justin Moore remains out for Nova. Coach Neptune said he's still day to day which has been for a while waiting for Doctor's clearance. This has nothing to do with celebrating injuries, but simply two potential huge opportunities and breaks in St. John’s’ favor. They need to win and capitalize on misfortunates of others. God knows we've been on the other side of bad news and bad breaks and plenty of players coming back against us etc.

They've also played UConn without Cligan. Gotta stack wins and take advantage of any kind of luck you can get in this sport, especially when you're St. John's.

Justin Moore is a great player, but let’s not pretend they were undefeated with him.
Nova has 4 losses.
He played 33, 35, 38 minutes respectively in all 3 Big Five L’s.

He got injured during the K-State loss and played only 8 minutes.

I remember that game as clear as day. As Mullin went to the line for the front end of his 1 and 1, NBC flashed a graphic that he had 999 career points and the announcers said he would hit 1000. No one expected him to miss. A 3 point lead would be all she wrote as there was no 3 point shot yet. I still can’t believe Pinone hit that elbow jumper. Cost us an outright Big East regular season championship. We ended up in a three-way tie, sharing the title with Nova and BC.

Regarding the last time we started the BE 3-1, we have to go back to Lavin’s first year with Hardy, DJ and company. Before that 2000-01 season, Omar Cook’s team actually started out the gate 5-1 in conference before losing 7 of 10 to finish .500 in league play.
I remember Mullin's FT miss and Pinone's jumper and I could not believe such a great FT shooter missed an important FT there. He made many more clutch FTs for us over 4 seasons but that one hurt. The Glory Days, pass you by, in the wink of an eye.

I don't know why but I'm excited for this game. It's going to be a real test and if we come out on top, we will be looking at a lot more "W"s for the rest of the season.

Nova's Philly Big 5 loss to SJU (I still hate they have that moniker and we have to be StJ, don't get me started) was a perfect storm for St. Joe's.

Every loose ball, every long rebound, every scramble, every call, it all went their way in that win.

I watched and thought why doesn't God Watch over the other SJU like that.

Their final score was more lopsided than the game.

Mullin is the programs greatest free throw shooter statistically. In 1984, 91 percent from the line, under one minute left, missed the most crucial of all 1 and 1’s in the NCAA’s vs Temple, allowing Terrance Stansbury to hit a 30 footer at the buzzer to send us home.

I want to say that Mullin also missed a critical free throw against , either Georgia or Temple , in NCAA Tournament game that cost us advancing .

I recall the team Cook played on could've easily started out the Big East slate at 6-0. If they had fouled Caron Butler or whoever passed the ball to him prior to Butler getting his shot off and sending the game into OT.

Jury is still out on Neptune and isn't close to coming back. However unless he is a complete moron (which I don't think he is), he will use Dixon's decent 3-point shooting to pull Soriano out to the perimeter on defense, where Pitino has been content to let him go anyway.

If Moore plays then historically next element of the Nova playbook would be to iso him in the post, which would probably become either Ledlum or Luis's problem. If Moore doesn't play then that headache diminishes.

And then the third leg of the Nova playbook is to get the ball into the paint and then kick it to the perimeter and cycle for a good 3, but they have not looked like that Nova team thus far this year.

I think Dixon and Soriano will both get theirs, and the question is whose secondary players show up better. If I were an oddsmaker I'd make the line Nova by 3.5 and I think it should be a 4 point game one way or the other.

I remember that game, Willie Shaw was on fire that game. Tough loss at Gampel. At least we got revenge later that month at MSG, on Lou Carnesecca Night, raising the Lou 526 Banner.

Good points . Using the Zone , would allow Ledlum to man the side wherever Dixon roams .

Or , I don’t know if RP ever uses the Box and 1 or , whether he thinks Dixon is that much a threat to use it .
The best defense will keep Soriano out of foul trouble . Can’t have him being a cheerleader on the Bench for long periods .

Nova has their own 3 point sharpshooter , who’s name escapes me . It would be great if Dunlap can put up similar numbers vs Nova . Rest assured though , Nova won’t be surprised when he enters the game , like Butler was .

NCJ , continue being diligent in the South corner of your Basement . It’s a crucial strategy .
You don’t use a box and 1 on a Dixon type. The kid scored 13 points against Xavier😂

Use something resembling more of a standard 2-3 and leave Soriano home in the lane.

He’s a big liability away from the basket. We’ve got tall guards to get a hand in his face.

He has shot very poorly. I’d still rather him be out, though.

Neptune won at Fordham which is darn near impossible to do. He brought them back from the abyss in his breakout season that won him the Nova job. Perhaps he's not terrible?

Just let Soriano defend Dixon - Dixon is going to get his, but so will Joel and production-wise we probably win that matchup. Key is not letting them use Dixon to pull Joel out too far and open up the lane or create post-up mismatches for Nova. If Luis and/or Ledlum switch with Soriano to pick up Dixon when he is away from the hoop we should be ok.

My concern in this game (other than Nova getting hot from 3) is watching backdoor cuts and post mismatches because nobody is home.
