Villanova (MSG), Sat., Jan. 11 , 7p, CBSSN

Wright did not recommend one candidate.

Wright submitted 3 name to the Villanova president: Baker Dunleavy, Martin Ingelsby, and Neptune. From that list Villanova’s President Peter Donohue selected Neptune.
At least Father Peter likes basketball.

I really don't understand, good or bad, why university presidents or trustees for that matter, are entrusted to interview or select basketball coaches. How many university presidents or trustees for that matter, even played a college varsity sport, and even if they did would that qualify them to make that hire.

Hire an AD, give him a budget, and let them do their job.

Except Nova is 4-2 in Big East which I’m not sure Norm ever was. Time will tell but I think they’ll have a solid season.
This is a completely watered down version of the Big East compared to the one Norm was competing in. Norm was terrible but he also beat some ranked teams here. Neptune is about to miss the NCAA tournament a 3rd straight year.

They did just beat UCONN and came pretty close to beating us at MSG so not sure that he’s a proven miss yet. Might want to check Jays first few years at Nova. Just don’t get all the Neptune hate. Curious.
I don’t get all the hate for a lot of things on every board I’ve ever went on; the shield of anonymity.

Beast - I'm surprised you asked this. You know why...For the top D1 schools where a sport(s) reigns supreme and iin some cases is as big as the school brand itself, it's less about the X & O and just as much about reputation, image, publicity, fundraising etc. They will not have AD solely responsible to hire someone that gets paid more than them and may not know that sport X & O AD well as any coach either.

Ex. A CEO mighg know very little about technology, but they might still be responsible to hire a CIO or similar functional area they don't have sdvsnced skill in. Same thing applies... They might rely on a portion of their BOD or a search firm or AD for input but the top of pyramid will most often make decisions for most prominent and biggest $ employees. It's expected these candidates know basics and by time of interviews. it's more about style, approach, leadership etc.

Still problematic. Assessing a coach's ability goes far beyond wins and losses and very very far beyond an interview with a university president. We've been there 3 times in the past 20 years.

Villanova as a result will likely give Neptune a longer leash than he would otherwise get. We've been there also.

He has the team so well prepared and he has the players to execute. Coaching is so important

Jim Calhoun has said that the one coach he rated above all others in terms of game prep and strategy is Rick Pitino.

If he gets our Johnnies to the promised land, the brightest lights of all will be on him nationally and make toiling in Lexington and Louisville seem like obscurity even with rabid fan bases.

Noticed the team took part in a handshake line following this game. Did CRP have a change of heart? (Apologies if this was discussed somewhere on the past 65 pages.)

Just wanted to add one thought on RJ, highlighted by his performance against Nova. He is not put together like a banger. Yet he gives up his body every game, whether fighting for rebounds, driving the lane, or diving for loose balls. So far, he takes the contact, and the abuse, without losing his cool. That's hard, but its the smart thing to do.

I tried to start a chant of “Let’s go Redmen” but I guess it violated PC etiquette.
The appropriate chant was always "Here we go Redmen, here we go!"

It would be great if we modified that to "Red Storm".

I loved that chant. It energized our team and said to opponents, "We're coming, and you can't stop us."

When he dove and rolled around on the floor with Dixon, he sent a signal to everyone.

Besides everything else he did that night, that really stood out to me.

the nova fans sitting around me were blaming the refs for the loss. Which was pretty excruciating to listen to after the whistle nova has gotten for 15 years
On X formerly Twitter, the Nova-verse, were saying things like the game was played 8 on 5 and the worst reffing they've ever seen, and they got home-jobbed, etc., etc., the other Nova fans took the L and moved on and said "it just wasn't their night".

We didn't beat them by one at the buzzer due to a bad call, GEEZE,

I remember "LET'S GO JOHNNIES", short, sweet, to the point, and works easily, that's OUR chant.

Plus DEE-FENCE!!1

Guys, realize that most of us are fossils (I’m class of ‘68), but Louie was the head of the committee that officially changed our name to Red Storm in June of 1994. We’re going on 21 years now, and it’s time it’s time to consign the Redmen name to the dustbins of history, along with the wooden cigar store Indian we used to lug around.
