Villanova (MSG), Sat., Jan. 11 , 7p, CBSSN

Every league needs heels and rootable guys. Calhoun, Boeheim, Hurley were/are perfect heels to root against every year. Wright was/is a class act and someone you can't help but root for every year.
Rivalry aside Nova is a class program, a credit to the Big East, and their fans are totally fine. Unlike UConn and Providence whose fans are trash.
actually the parents of the students and older alums are fine, I agree.

Wright carried this league until UConn came back. That should never be forgotten.
Because of Wright and those two big Natys, the Big East had credibility, and when UConn won their two, the Big East could tout 4 Championships in like (?) 8 years, not bad for a little Catholic league. The bigger conferences can't say that.

Now if one of the other BE schools could do it (US!!!) that's even better. If not us, then Marquette would be nice, another blast from the past, Al McGuire has a legacy connection to St. John's and grew up in Rockaway with my mom.

The term “must-win” gets thrown around too loosely here. Important game yes, but must-win by definition implies that if we lose the season is over.
I understand both sides. Obviously this isnt a MUST win, but every home game we drop kind of means the road game becomes a must win (except like Marquette/UConn)

Agreed. Probably closer to the must win end of the continuum than @Xavier IMO. We really can't drop a home game this year. If we do, we have to get it back on the road from the same team.

Big East fans owe gratitude to Nova for winning the two National Championships when the league was on the ropes. Next to SJU they are my favorite Big East team.
Nice post. I agree up to your last sentence. While I am a fan of Wright, as he is all class, I have a hard time picking Villanova as my second favorite Big East team.

And it isn’t so much a knock on them or their fans (although the KnickNova stuff is grating), I just cannot have a second favorite team that I want to knock the snot out of every year.

The BE Coaches currently , with a few exceptions , are a decent lot . Whether we like them or not.
Hurley is a great Coach , as was Jay Wright but their styles could not be more different .
Cooley is a very good Coach whether we like him or not. He’s not achieved a level of greatness and may not.
Smart , McDermott , Miller , Matta have had Career success not only in the BE but , in their prior positions .
English , Neptune , Holtmann are still new in their current jobs

Pitino has baggage from his prior gigs and there are many who dislike him for those circumstances . But , few ever question his on Coaching abilities

I don't think we need to get into a linguistics conversation about "must win" vs. "really important win". But our OOC scheduling & performance basically eliminated the margin of error in the Big East.

Get to 13 wins before the BET any way necessary and we'll be in pretty good shape IMO

I don't agree. If we get to 13 wins without beating Marquette/UConn, we'll be a straight up bubble team. This is a weak conference, and we have to beat the actual/close to bubble teams (Villanova, Georgetown, Xavier, Creighton), while also beating the cream of the crop.

World won’t end if we lose, but holding serve for every game would be huge, losing one ok, certainly not a preference lol

Tremendous opportunity game v well playing Nova to get on an attention getting roll. Thus will be a highly attended and viewed game. Let’s take advantage in front of a raucous crowd in the “Mecca”. We all want the 25 year drought of never winning a Dance game to end. This seems like a key step towards accomplishing that.

Lastly, obviously Pitino, who loves the bright lights, is light years better than Neptune.

Dixon gonna get his- as all good offensive players do... expect 20+ form him... but just gotta make him work for it- run him off the 3pt line.. fould him hard near the hoop- no open looks.

Very important- as someone said earlier... make him work on D- run him off screens etc... we play up to our Defensive standard- think we win comfortably.
