Villanova Game

Stating the obvious, but this is one of the 3 toughest games on our schedule, so not having CO hurts. Still think we can win the game, but this would be a fun one to have our full complement.

Agree, but talk to Providence about that. Injuries are part of the game and we have been fortunate to date in that regard. Overcoming adversity and winning, or taking Nova to the limit is what I expect.

Completely agree. I didn't mean that to come off as bellyaching about this injury or injuries in general - as you note we have been fortunate in both regards (if CO is in fact back in 2ish weeks, and certainly with respect to injuries in general).

I was just commenting that it would have been fun to be going into this particular game with our full arsenal to really see where we are, as this is as big a test as a team can get. But agree, this is something you have to deal with, and in that respect the game remains a test just the same.

Villanova and their fans should be embarrassed by how they have been pummeled by Creighton in the 2 games played. They were awful! Had no clue how to defend the jays shooters.

On the other hand, we could have very easily beaten the jays twice, not just once. And, for much of the 2nd game we really put it to the jays, something Nova could not do.

We'll see for sure on Saturday. Not having CO will make it tough but, that can't be an excuse.. Injuries are part of the game. Pinkston is difficult to handle in the low post and GG and Sanchez need to have good games with limited fouling.

This game is important to win if we want serious recognition going into the final weeks of the season.

I didn't take it as complaining at all. Good posts. Sorry if my response sounded that way.

.
Totally agree injuries are part of the game. This is when Sanchez has to step u p big time. He is the key. But all need to bring it up a level for 40 mins..

Not at all! Agree we need to find a way to be competitive on Saturday with or without CO. Have to deal with these sorts of things.

Gift redshirt looking huge now for these next 2 crucial games. Pinkston is going to be tough to stop. We may need to play a lot of zone and hope their shooters are off.

I have a feeling this is going to be a very entertaining high scoring affair. Harrison and Jordan need to repeat what they did against Georgetown and Sanchez/Pointer need to be under control as much as they can be.

I actually think that we might have to give Pinkston the McDermott treatment... let one defender, and only one defender go against him, but really really make sure we defend the outside shot of other players. It's fine if Pinkston gets his fair share, but don't let them go bombs away from three because we give too much or any help defense. We can't let them start drilling three's

I think we will get Pinkston into early foul trouble. He is foul prone like Bell and Ochefu. It would be awesome to get two quick fouls on him and Ochefu.
I agree that single coverage is the way to go. He's only averaging 15 and 5.9. He'll be a load, though.

Expect Wright to use 1-2-2 three quarters press to attempt to slow down StJohns offensive tempo.

IMO Jordan will have a big time game as he returns to Philly. He will drive Arch crazy all afternoon.

Archie blew several chances to sink Providence by keeping the ball to himself eating up the clock and throwing wild 3's up as the clock ran out. He got the points in the end to win but if it had turned out differently he would have been the one responsible for the loss.

I know others have made the same point you have but I don;t believe he will be covering Jordan. One of Nova's strengths is their interchangeable parts which allow them great flexability on D. I could be wrong but I don't see Nova putting him on Jordan; if they do I agree he is just too quick, too big and too strong which is why I don't see Wright going that way. If he does, look for Achideacono (sp. for sure) to try and stay in front and draw charges as Jordan goes to the basket.

Actually more Wright would have been responsible because they did the same thing 3 times after time outs so I have to believe Wright wanted those scenarios. Finally worked although even the 2nd time he got to the basket pretty clear but threw up a weird lefty underhand that had no chance. Only the 1st time was horrible, the buzzer brick.

Why'd that get locked? Did LMF lock it so no one could point out that Archie shoots 39% from the field and 32% from 3. Sure he's made some clutch shots but he's overrated big time.

Well, he has the ball in his hands most of the time for one of the best teams in the country so he must be doing something right; he is not a great shooter granted but he IS a good ball player.

As stated in my other post.

So he's a good ball player but over-rated??

He's a good player, a bad shooter. And certainly not an all BE level player, solid but unspectacular. Some guys are lauding him like he's Dougie McD 2 as far as scoring goes, and he sure isn't. That's the only point I'm trying to make.

Logen..... I see Jordan guarding Arch and I see Jordan making Arch stop his dribble farther from the basket.

I believe Villanova will play 2-3 zone for most of the game.

I think the most important stat is that Nova is 23-3, was ranked as high as 6th, and he's been a key part of that. So I would say he's been good enough.

I think you guys are underrating archidiciano. He is crafty and most importantly he is smart. The kid continuously makes winning plays. Always gets the loose balls, finds the open man, gets foul calls (like it or not), and makes clutch shots. Rysheed has a tendency to throw his shoulder/elbow when he makes drives, I hope the staff is warning him about getting called for offensive fouls this weekend. We need him for 35+.

Kinda like the plays they ran for Dlo at the close of regulation and the first overtime of the first PC game. Except it was Cotton who hit the game winning shot as time expired.

Or he's going to be so over-amped that he'll try to take over the game on O with wild plays and comitt silly fouls at the D end.

Let's hope you're right.

I expect you will see Harrison try to take over the game, not Jordan. Jordan proved at the end of the Seton Hall game that he's a point guard. That play was an isolation for him, he saw the pass to Obekpa as the better option and took it.

If that play had been drawn up as an isolation for Harrison, the shot would have gone up.

I think Jordan will just play his game and do well on Saturday.

Ergo my point about keep in front of him, stop him from penetrating and hopefully keep him chucking. He's not quick, like you said he's craft and smart. Jordan and Branch are both very good defenders and should be able to neutralize him to some extent by keeping him out of the lane and disrupting whatever it is he's trying to do. I'm not concerned with him making the clutch shots.

My bigger concerns are Bell and Hilliard; if either of them have a big game, that will be the difference when you add in what Pinkston and Arch... will give Nova. You need three scorers to consistently win; if you have a fourth its a loss, or win if it's SJU.
