Villanova Game

Aside from Gift and Sanchez ( who both really need to step it up this game), I think that Jordan and Branch can play a huge roll here. They can do that by taking the ball to the basket, which both them do so well. They can get Villanova's big men into foul trouble that way thus somewhat negating the loss of CO for us. I also think that Jordan and Branch quicker than Arcidiacono and driving to the basket will also force him into some foul trouble. Jordan and Branch are also good on ball defenders and should succeed at taking Villanova out of there offense by pressuring Arcidiacono. I would have them both on the court at the same time. I'm looking for Jordan to take Arcidiacono to the woodshed this game.

Agree, Mean. I absolutely love Jordan and Branch on the court at the same time. I realize they each need a spell once in a while, but when Phil comes in to give one of them a rest, the game changes dramatically. And not always for the better.

Archie's an excellent shooter, but I agree he is no where near as quick as Jordan or Branch and either one can take him off his game.

Cannot wait for this game!

The key to this game will be who gets the better of the Karr-Pinkston matchup. GG will start off on Ochefu, and I'm sure Primo sees time at both the center and four. I think the Karr-Pinkston matchup could depend on foul trouble, with Karr being quicker and Pinkston having the edge inside. The perimiter/swing/point matchups should balance out on paper, let's hope Sheed or DLo step up instead of somebody from nova.

We obviously cannot play zone against Nova - Archie, Bell and Hilliard. Sampson will have to be at his best against Pinkston, similar to his performance against McDermott. Pinkston always shows up against us. Their center, Ochechu, (?) is no slouch and can hurt us in low. Hopefully we stay out of foul trouble. Going to miss Obekpa for sure.

We will start man but if fouls pile up because of the the crack officiating crews we will have to revert to zone.
Ochefu doesn't scare me. They are a guard oriented team. The shooters you mentioned we have to stop. When we lost by 7 at home to them Bell and Hillard shot 1-9 and 1-10 respectively.

The potential for foul trouble worries me too. Nova took 40 foul shots in the game at MSG, and at home I could certainly see a repeat of that. That really worries me.
But aside from that, I think our defense will hold their own. I think we can hold their guards in check.
But our offense will have to be getting good shots, and we'll need to rebound well.

3 Keys:
1) Win the free-throw battle
2) Don't settle for long jumpers; penetrate and move the ball around.
3) Rebound

Agree and will add Sheed needs to avoid getting suckered by annoying Arcidiacono to commit early fouls. Nova, as you infer, is masterful at drawing fouls. I do think we can get them to turn the ball over however. We'll see. Keep it close and steal one.

Just think how exciting of a game this must be for Rysheed? He's going home to play in Philly at a time when he's playing his best ball, his team is on a roll, and it's a showdown with a highly ranked rival!

Excellent point, Desco. I hope that excitement makes him motivated and not so anxious that he has an off game. It will be fun to watch him on Saturday. It's always fun to watch him!

Nova looked very vulnerable last night against providence. We can do this.

They looked vulnerable the first time we played them.
We have always matched up well against them.
Not chalking up a W because it will be a fight but its far from the L some people seem to be resigning themselves too.

Hear, hear! They've had a much better year than I could have ever envisioned but I just don't see why people are so scared of them. We played them close the first time. They got violated by Creighton twice...and we all know how we've done against Creighton.

Ladies and gentlemen, we are as good as any team in the Big East!!!

Because people see the # next to their name and Jay Wright love fest that people have had here since he was Hofstra coach. We match well with them. They have similar players to what we recruit. I think Marquette road game is tougher honestly.

Agree with your esteemed judgment. This is one that is totally winnable, and will finally give us a reasonable path to an at large bid. I'd hate to travel to Marquette with an NCAA bid in the balance. Now is the time to gut out a win - totally doable.

We smoked Marquette at home. They will want to smack us back. Like how Gtown played out. They are finally playing well similar to our streak. They were picked 1st for a reason pre-season.

I'm not so worried about Marquette because they lack shooters. And Obekpa should be back by then.

No game a lock and Buzz has team playing better. Though a tough road game, I too expect an edge in guard play. We'll see.

A Buzz Williams team on its home court is always going to be a tough game.

4) Outscore them.

I think you guys are underestimating Arcediacono. He is shiftier than he looks like and Nova finds ways to free him up against a switching D or by using screens and picks. Watch the end of regulation and the 2nd OT of Nova/Providence. Both times the seemingly slow Arcediacono somehow beat his man and dribbled down the side of the lane virtually uncontested for a layup. He missed at the end of regulation, but hit to win the game at the end. And obviously he hits killer shots from deep. He's a problem. Not saying we can't contain him, and as I said I think our guard play can balance theirs out. But I wouldn't count on shutting Arcediacono down. He's going to get his.

TWO full busses for this weekend at nova. LETS GO. #sjubb #redzoneontheroad @SJURedzone #hypeisreal #villanofun

Why'd that get locked? Did LMF lock it so no one could point out that Archie shoots 39% from the field and 32% from 3. Sure he's made some clutch shots but he's overrated big time.

Prob an errant keystroke by a mod. Not me, I just unlocked the thread.

Arch had a pretty good rookie season and I thought he would have done more this year. Nonetheless, if they need a big shot, he is the kind of kid who isn't afraid to take it. I would pay close attention to him in the closing seconds of a tight game.

Agree. He's going to get his points, that's for sure. He won't be stopped; we can only hope to contain him! ;)

Also, despite him being a bit off from last year, Wright has great faith in him. In crunch time at end of regulation & final OT period of PC game, he ran two isolation plays at top of key. On both he took advantage of big men switching on him. One he missed and the other was game winning shot. He is a solid, clutch college player for sure. Annoying as hell as well. Lol

Don't forget the missed forced jumper at the end of the first O/T.

True. Bad shot for sure. He does that too at times. He's not perfect by any means.

Despite his scoring average dipping a little he's actually shooting better this year. Last year he shot 34% from the floor and 32% from three. He's a tough kid for sure but I've always thought of him as a bit of a chucker.

He's a better PG this year, his assist numbers are up a little and his TO's cut in half and then some. I'd rather see him forced to shoot than allowed to create.

Well, he has the ball in his hands most of the time for one of the best teams in the country so he must be doing something right; he is not a great shooter granted but he IS a good ball player.
