Villanova Game

OK.. Question for the forum: Who do we want to win in the Nova vs. Providence game tomorrow night? I can see making a case for how whoever wins helps us.

My thought is to root for Nova to win. Helps us move ahead of PC in the standings, plus I don't want to face a Nova team at home ona two game losing streak. Thoughts?

Gotta root for Nova. While we are trending up and they are trending down, we are in a dead heat with them. We need to separate from them. We aren't going to catch Nova. As for being worried about catching t hem on a two game losing streak, I always think that is over-rated as a factor. A team may be motivated or they may be demoralized. They caught us on a two game losing streak early in the year and it didn't help us.

Whoa whoa...we got Butler in a few days. Can't be thinking anything but win #18.
I'd like to see these guys run them out of the gym early.

On the subject of Butler, I hate 9 pm games. I think it is very easy to come out flat, and play a very sloppy game. These kids should be sky guy, and brining the intensity back to the Garden shouldn't be a problem. The best things fans can do to help avoid a letdown is to show up in numbers, and be loud. Just three home games remaining - if you've been saving your quarters, now would be a good time to break the piggybank and buy a ticket (Use code SJUBB or TZOO on Ticketmaster for discount tickets)

Isn't Butler playing at 9 pm also? If you are a good team things like start times don't factor into your intensity level. We are becoming a good team and I for one will be incredibly disappointed if we play with anything but the same effort we played with last night. If we lose make it because Butler played an '85 Nova game.

Another silly post by you. If we played them outdoors on an ice covered court, the conditions would be the same for both teams, but not optimal for good baskertball. We played a very sloppy game vs. SHU, and I believe the late start contributed to it. Last night we played one of our best games of the season, perhaps the best game. I don't know how you define effort, but I think you can play hard but poorly. Rest assured, Butler can beat our team, and not 6 weeks ago, a number of respected posters thought they were an NCAA team.

You know who wrote the following? You

" To say this game is an easy win or I fear this opponent more means nothing because of the very essence of the beauty of sport "on any given night." The foul shot analysis by my buddy was just meant to convey the fine line between winning and losing at this level and the meaningless of stats."

Here's another one of your posts:

"Hopefully the players don't think that way; we are certainly not good enough to consider any game anything but dangerous."

Honestly, I think you post stuff to be a contrarian and you have no idea what you are writing.

Well, I definetly post stuff to be a contrarian, big part of my personality. But I also just as definetly know what I am talking about. I don't post a million silly posts about how if this happened or that happened we would be the second coming of UCLA. Or if we play poorly it is because we are starting at 9 o'clock insted of 7. Did you ever play a sport? There is NOTHING more irrelevant than a starting time if you are a focused athlete. Those are just lame excuses or nonsensical attempts by you to act like you know something. To take it down a level; so we would be affected by a starting time but Butler wouldn't? Not sure about the quotes you wasted your time digging up because they were just attempts to respond to the inanity of your predicting easy games and tough games; turns out SHU, "an easy game", was a nail-biter while Gtown, the team we couldn't beat, was a wire to wire 20 point victory. That's why I am a contrarian to you and other posters who grace us with the Nostradamus predictions of what's going to happen; IMO it's all nonsense but it is fun and I mean that, none of this is serious at least from my point of view. If I am getting on your nerves let me know and I'll stop responding because it is all good to me, nothing personal.

Very respectful post. I'm sure I saw you play on one of Clair Bee's teams - so did you play D1, D2, D3?. You are a contrarian - you contradict yourself post to post.. So we can disagree about start time, but I think it matters - you don't - who cares?

I don't predict anything - but I was worried about SHU on their own court with good reason, and also G'town. If we see them again, especially with Josh Smith, we could lose, even at MSG.

Josh will not play rest of season.

Not saying good or bad, but Saturday's game v 'Nova will be RJ's first game "back home" in front of his family and friends. Something to watch, possibly. (Not overlooking Butler, either.)

interesting fact....

Villanova has lost three games this season. The Wildcats have also played an overtime game in each of the three games immediately following a loss. And won all three.

Saturday they will lose their 4th game. >-)

All things equal, I'm sure Jordan is glad he choose SJU over Temple.. The Owls are having a poor season, last in the A-10.. No post season for them. With CO out we will need another big game from him and DLO to tame the Cats.

Sanchez and GG will also need to step up..Sampson will have to shoulder more defense and rebounding as well as, scoring.

We can win but, need a team effort from all ..

Would have been nice to have CO for this game to frustrate Pinkston in the middle

Sanchez & GG will be arguably the most important SJU Players on the court on Saturday. If you watched the OT of last night's PC/VU game (and you probably did unless you were at MSG since we couldn't watch SJU until that game was finished), VU was most successful when they dumped the ball down low to Pinkston. He was unstoppable at certain times. Arcidiacano tends to shoot well against the Redmen, but Pinkston is the one who scares me the most. Both Primo & GG will need to play very disciplined with respect to player control (watch the fouls), defense against their bigs, and a refocused dedication towards defensive rebounding. Those are priorities.

On the offensive end, GG can keep doing whatever it is he does out there on offensive - which isn't much, but it would be helpful if he could get out and run a little bit. Now I'm talking to you Primo, NO LONG JUMP SHOTS. With Obekpa out and if GG is on the bench, you need to be under the boards. If he takes stupid three point shots or long jumpers along the baseline, not only does it leave no one to grab the inevitable rebound, but he's then out of position to get back on D as well.

Lets Go Redmen!

Agree on this. It's painful to watch Sanchez taking those long jumpers. But his rebounding was off the charts last night, he and GG will be key on Sat.

We can beat Nova without Obekpa. He played only 15 mins in the G'town game and G'town is much more representative of what we'll face on Sat than Butler.

without a doubt, Sanchez's rebounding was very productive last evening; however, I think most of us expect a more physical game against 'Nova on Satuday. I guess my point is that I'd prefer the coaches to take a conservative approach with Primo & GG. I'm almost willing to forgo any offensive production from either of them in return for commitment on the glass and on defense versus the Wildcats.

A win would pretty much cement an NCAA bid without having to win the Big East tourney. Unfortunately the loss of Obekpa will seriously hurt against Nova and Xavier. GG will have play his best ball of the season and Sanchez will have play under control to give us a chance. We have the depth to pressure their guards and I like our chances against Nova better than I do against Marquette.

Nova looked very vulnerable last night against providence. We can do this.

They looked vulnerable the first time we played them.
We have always matched up well against them.
Not chalking up a W because it will be a fight but its far from the L some people seem to be resigning themselves too.

IMO this is a winnable game for the Johnnies.

The variable will be how the game is called by the refs.

If the refs call the touch fouls as they did in games at the start of the season then I believe StJohns will have a difficult time.

If on the other hand the refs allow the kids to play as they have the second half of the season then StJohns wins (perhaps easily).

I don't see Arcidianocco (sp?) having a good game against Jordan.

If you feel that good about it, then I feel good about it lol
