Villanova Game

I don't have a temper Beast. Just think people like you and simply red shouldn't be posting things like "Greene caught the ball with his back to the basket and four guys around him."

That's plain wrong to say. Don't know where you get off saying I have a temper, just think you aren't the brightest.

Take it to PM if you want to get personal. I will engage you there. Greene was clearly in trouble as soon as he caught the ball, and Harrison was open at the foul line. Are you saying he was wide open for an easy deuce? All I can say is Harrison looked a lot more like the Harrison at the end of the DePaul game than the guy who has played big during this run. Can anyone then explain the wisdom of giving a foul down two before the ball was inbounded with 2 seconds left, as opposed to going for the steal or forcing a 5 second violation? Certainly with your superior intellect you can explain that.

I watched the Nova game on TV and actually found myself pleading with Bill and Gus to just shut the f up and announce the game and spare us the trivia and other BS.  The biggest Fox blunder was showing the starting lineups and seeing Arcidiacono on our roster as Phil Greene!  I wish!!
I wish I could say this was a moral victory but then I would be a liar.  This game was for the taking and our offensive sets in the last five minutes just plain sucked!  Harrison in particular was ineffective.  Two Nova turnovers and the subsequent FOUR bad shot attempts by SJ sealed the victory for Nova.
The goat of the game?  The winner by a mile was Dom Pointer.  Pointer hanging on the rim for about 3 seconds was the ultimate in basketball stupidity that donated 2 points and the ball to Nova.  Greene played well in the first half and was useless in the second half.  Jamal Branch had a toothache in his brain when he committed 2 fouls in 8 seconds at the end of the half which made the wizard angry thus punishing him (and us) in the second half by having us suffer with Greene and Pointer and basically give Nova the advantage in the backcourt in the 2nd half.
Chris Opekpa playing worried me since aggravating his injury could pretty much end our season.  The wizard using him as much and not giving GG some burn was a mystery and reminded me of all the bad decisions Lavin made before the run with bonehead player substitutions.
18-10 with Xavier and Marquette coming up does not bode well for an at-large NCAA bid but then again I will keep with my opinion that given our bad losses only a Big East championship will get us in the NCAA.

Sad to see jerseyshorejohnny wasn't able to enjoy the whole game:

Actually, reading the reason that the guy got ticked is something that is now happening at MSG as well. In the pre renovated garden you could enter at any tunnel in the lower level, and walk down to the walkway, and then find your seats. In the new garden, even 40 minutes before gametime, they won't let you walk across empty rows of seats even if you are one section off. the problem is that in new arenas and stadiums rows have a lot more seats between sections to squeeze more seats in, perhaps 20 or more. I can tell you first hand its annoying as hell to enter one runway over, and be told you can't cross over 15 empty seats. Not justifying this guy's asinine behavior, but there is a reason behind it.

Seriously?
Gus is the best play by play college basketball broadcaster.
Big east is lucky to have him.
Raftery is possibly the best possible guy to have doing color commentary. He is a bridge to the old big east and is good for a few pints post game.
You probably like joe buck and Michael Kay.

Tough loss.. I dislike Pointer and Greene in the game together for any sort of down the stretch time. They cannot be relied on for making plays and this game proved it.

jordan still needs a better jumper and Sampson will need to shoot free throws better if he wants to be a pro..

I also thought we let Nova dictate slow, halfcourt basketball and this is a weakness for our team..Nova controlled tempo and that's not good. This was a game we needed. Was it crucial,no, but, if your a clutch team you should win this game.

We did get homecourted a bit but, that's BE BASKETBALL, And so many of our guys do not finish a lot of layups and bunnies.

Pointer was a jerk on his failed dunk/technical in the first half.. Those missed points and free throws and possession were big. and, he couldn;t guard Diacono on his drives to the hoop.

I just saw the game on tape and haven't read earlier posts. So, if I'm redundant, please excuse me.

Still venting so can someone please explain to me why Gift was redshirted?
If he doesn't play w a hobbling CO and no Sanchez, this a great question.

All about match ups

Matchups is exactly the reason why Gift should have played
They had a front line of Pinkston, Ofechku (sp) and Bell
When Obekpa was out of the game, we countered with Sampson, Pointer and a guard
That's a recipe for getting killed inside
Obekpa or Gift should have been on the court throughout the game IMO
In hindsight, Gift got royally screwed
Not all of it is St John's fault - they didn't expect Sanchez would be forced to sit out last year
But, as things turned out, Gift would have played a lot last year and has not played much this year
I believe that Gift has been very productive in the limited time he has played this year

Gus is a good play by play guy but in this game he was sidetracked by Raftery's long winded minutia during key plays and missed announcing who committed fouls, etc. Sometimes color guys add a little more than the viewer needs to hear and do not know when to tone down the color. Tarik Turner is painful to listen to for that reason.

Sat several sections away from the SJU contingent at the game. A small group of fans made a lot of noise - fantastic - and I didn't feel quite so alone wearing red! What can you say about the game? Everything that can be said has been said. In the end, it's all about putting the ball in the basket. We missed so many shots, but most notably, the layups. No way that should happen with players at this level. That said, I'll root for the Johnnies till the bitter end, whenever that should come.

I wish people would stop grouping Greene and Pointer together. Greene wasn't even a top 100 recruit, but he has competed since day one with a stable of top 75 talent. He is limited, but he does help this team with his shooting and hustle. At the very least, he doesn't make many mistakes. Dom is an unqualified bust that displays a shockingly low basketball IQ and a complete disregard for hustle. This was the #35 recruit in the country. I'm going to start calling him Dom Pointless.

That play he got T'd up on was one of the most pointless things I've ever witnessed in a basketball game. Not only do you blow an easy layup off sensational pass, but you decided to hang on the rim while reaching out to slam back your miss? WTF? Then he sits on the bench bitching and moaning about the call. His act is getting so old. Dom the defender got baked yet again by anyone he tried to cover inside or out.

Harrison's shot was off and he was getting bumped and manhandled all night, but did anyone else notice his hustle? The kid was everywhere and he has a fraction of the size and physical gifts of Pointer. Three offensive rebounds from Harrison and he was crashing in late on the defensive end and it was needed.

It's hard to watch Dom on the floor. I thought he played his way to the bench at least 3 times, but Lav kept putting him back in.
He seems to be the only one in the past 4 weeks who has not found a role on this team. Hooper is somewhat in the same boat.
I don't feel that any single play lost the game for us today, but Dom was a liability across the board. No doubt he's a better player
than what we are seeing this year, but it's getting frustrating waiting for him to get his game together.

Just got home from Philly. Definitely not the prettiest game to watch, but our boys played hard all game long. Impossible for me to say for certain, but I suspect it's a different outcome if we have Sanchez and a healthy Obekpa out there. The lack of front court depth made St. John's a mid range team all day.

But at the end of the day, the team lost because it couldn't shoot all day long. You aren't going to win many games with this:

D'Angelo Harrison: 4-15 FG, 1-4 3P
Rysheed Jordan: 6-15 FG, 0-3 3P
Phil Greene IV: 3-10 FG, 2-4 3P

Also, I'm sorry but on what planet is PG IV playing 31 minutes and Jamal Branch only getting 6 minutes? Still don't understand what the hell Lavin is thinking on that one.

Just back home from the game. Our group sat with a large contingent of boisterous, supportive
students . Disappointing loss with some squandered opportunities. That said, liked the grit of the team & have confidence we nail Xavier Tuesday. As noted by many, the Arcidiacono banked in three was the "dagger". All in all, nice effort.

Three cheers and a round of applause for those that made the trip to Philly today.

Saw NYC Redmen, Salty Dog and his Brother-In Law, among others at the McFaddens reception

Great representation by a tremedous and very loud group in the upper deck at Wells Fargo.

Several members of The Board of Trustees and Board of Governors there cheering for our Redmen.

Even Roger Rubin of the NY Daily News took notice, below is what he tweeted when the game was tied:

"St. John's with a 9-3 run ties it up with Villanova 47-47. Wells Fargo has gotten quiet. A bunch of Storm fans in the cheap seats chanting."

just watched the game on dvr. that sucked. we could not get over the hump. Phil not taking that shot on the feed from D Lo was atrocious. Rysheed was ok but he was trying too hard out there. we got away from getting the ball to Sampson in the paint. D Lo needed more touches in the last 7 minutes. Sir Dom's head was not in this game at all. . Obekpa did all he could with a bum ankle. I'm glad we fought and didn't fold when we were down 8 and 6 points but we seriously should have won this game. In the absence of top 50 rpi wins, we need to win out and take 1 or 2 in the BET to feel comfortable on selection sunday.

Had a great time. Loved turnout. Sat up near student section. At 50-50 had 3 chances to score and get over the hump, then that stupid banked 3 pointer....pretty much the turning point. Could taste this one. Ah well.

Unlike you I don't make excuses and conjure up lies for the inexcusable decisions of players. I can't discern why Harrison did that. Just like I can't understand how you can say Greene was in a precarious situation. You're either flat out blind, enjoy lying, or hate Harrison. It was actually a nice pass IMO.

PS thanks for the PM invitation but I can't waste any more time on you.

A few thoughts.......

Slick Steve has me scratching my head again. I have no understanding of why GG played less today with Sanchez out. He at very least could have helped get Pinkston or Ochefcu in foul trouble. He also could have helped us on the boards.

Let's face it, Lavin simply does not like Branch. For some reason, he feels Greene should play triple the minutes that Branch plays.

Marillac has a terrific nickname for Dom. I would only enhance it by calling him Sir Pointless.

Harrison does not get a fair whistle. I hate the powting that he does, but he definitely does not get the whistle. Archidiacono, on the othe hand, is treated like the chosen one. Geez....you can't breathe on that kid without a whistle. The banked three was just maddening.

Although frustrating, I like our team. I expect them to play hard Tuesday night. I 'll be there and hope for a loud supportive Garden crowd.
