Villanova Game Thread

Anyone who ever played basketball understood before the this season started that there was no chemestry with this team and that the members of this team were limited in their basketball abilities.I pointed this out and the Lavin apologists shouted me down.

The point I am attempting to make is that the fans on this site had unrealistic expectations at the beginning of this season as evidenced by the fact that the Big East coaches had StJohns picked 5th in the 10 team league while the posters on this site had StJohns as a NCAA Team.

That's right the coaches play their teams against SJU and they know the flaws. Johnnie's probably will finish 5th.
Gus and Raff were pulling for ST. John's as they want the team to be good and represent the league and more importantly
Fox Sports 1. They are paying big money to all these basketball schools and they want a good product. You can be
sure of that.

We didn't play bad. and you can't blame Lavin for this We can't shoot ,so opposing teams pack the inside . What happened to Sanchez? He only took 2 shots 0 rebounds and assists.Sheed looked very good, only thing he is missing, like everyone else is an outside shot. DLo needs to be more efficient, but he sure gets to the free throw line and makes them. Not Dissapointed w this game. Sure would love Lavin to get us a JC shooter and quality big.Unfortunately Hooper was ineffective.

Bottom line IMO is that if Pointer missed the bus today, we win. He is so awful at the end of close games. I don't understand why he is allowed to do anything he wants, and I certainly can't comprehend why hasn't learned to play within his ability and defer to others late in games.

1/8 from the floor, 0-1 from three (why?) 4 fouls, ZERO offensive rebounds again, 1 assist to 3 turnovers, 2 steals and 2 blocks.
It's time to move behind Balamou. Balamou at least plays under control and isn't a liability. Pointer is worthless to this team if he isn't hitting the offensive glass. Zero offensive rebounds? Was he too busy spotting up for threes? How can that be possible.

It became clear last year that only one of Garrett and Pointer would prevail. I wish it was Garrett. The kid played with the heart of a lion, showed that he could be a decent shooter in the future, had much more skill, and was very savvy. Dom is out of control at all times and has no skill to speak of.

Not time to pile on the kid now with the Lavin killers looking for blood.

How did he wiff with only one scholarship player leaving?

Fair enough but the fact reamains we have no recruits next year to help this team..

Lavins made the tourney once with Norms players eventually hes gonna have to take some responsibility for all this..

You're right you cant blame the guy who recruited a team full of guys who cant shoot for not being able to shoot..

Is lavin really a great recruiter? Most of these kids are busts.[/quote]

Please stop with the nonsense that Lavin is a "great recruiter".

He has recruited a collection of good athletes who can jump and run but have limited basketball skills.

Anyone who thinks Lavin is a "great recruiter" then please explain why he has not recruited a single player for the 2014 recruiting cycle despite extending 14 offers with zero acceptances. Where I live 0 for 14 does not make a "great recruiter" particularly when StJohns loses 3 scholarship players to graduation at the end of this year.

.

But when is this kid going to get it? How many close games has he played us out of over three years? He has no awareness of his weaknesses. And what he's been doing--or, rather, not been doing--on the offensive glass is crazy. His entire role is to create easy baskets with his athleticism. Half of that is on the offensive glass and if he can't give us at least 2-3 offensive boards a game, he is not worth the offensive liability.

Why did we lose? Just a few random thoughts:

1. How many "good looks" and bunnies did we miss? I lost count.
2. We try to play too fast and are totally undisciplined/disorganized on both ends of the floor
3. We foul like crazy. Nova was in the bonus with more than 16 minutes left in the 2nd half
4. When you play a 3 guard lineup, you get killed on mismatches when you switch on defense as much as we do. How many times we did we have a guard try to defend Pinkston down low or Sanchez (or another big) try to defend a guard at the top of the key? Sanchez hardly played because most of his fouls were committed guarding smaller/quicker guys
5. We don't play good fundamental defense. We get beat off the dribble constantly and depend on blocked shots as our means of defense. Bad idea!!
6. Our forwards think they are guards and turn the ball over constantly trying the lead the break

I am sure that I can come up with many other reasons, but why beat a dead horse?
As I have stated before, a well organized and disciplined team will almost always beat an undisciplined and out of control team
We would be a much better street ball team. a lot of the "tic tac" fouls that we commit wouldn't be called
But, unfortunately, The Big East Conference is not a street ball league

By the way, glad to see that we burned Balamou's redshirt year for a good reason - to sit on the bench in uniform
Another great decision by our crackerjack coaching staff!!!!

It's time to realistically assess this team.. Despite HS rankings, these players have flaws that makE them incapable of beating any good team. So far in their careers they are batting zero in big wins.

Sampson,Pointer, Greene, Harrison came up small at crunch time .. AGAIN! They shoot so horribly, individually and as a team that it makes you wonder how could anyone assemble such a team of mostly flawed players.

Again, a exciting game for 32-33 minutes and then, in a flash, game over. No hope of rallying from behind. And, the stupid plays and missed chippies are enough to make the most diehard fan weep.

Clearly this group will never be a high level winning team. Too many weaknesses to overcome.

Hard to deal with after such lofty predictions and Lavinwood hype. We're basement dwellers in the league.. Losing another big game in the Garden is becoming too familiar.

Why not keep those scholarships open for transfers like Wichita State, Oregon, UNLV, and have done so successfully?
I would love to pick up a pair of freshman or soph transfers that will sit out next season and then be ready to go after we lose a big chunk of our roster.

One thing that I have learned over the years from reading this site. Don't believe the hype when it comes to evaluating our recruits or players. You will always be disappointed.
Rule of thumb. Read stuff here and lower expectations by 50%.
Some here see NBA players on this squad? I don't even see D league players. These guys all have serious deficiencies in their games.

Refs were awful and our missing layups througout certainly Lavins fault. Green is a ball hog and has yet to pass to Hooper this season. That is Lavins fault.

You are so right. I counted three times where Green avoided passing to an open Hooper. Each time Hooper set a pick and cut to the corner wide open, Green looked to his left. How long does he get away with dribbling outside while the clock counts down.

There was talk of Jakaar Sampson going pro after 2 years.. LMAO.

He may never make it into the NBA the way he is playing and not improving his game.

He is a very slow learner and will need all 4 years. Almost everything Karr does is forced. I think all the coaches realize this now and will need to give him extra attention.
