Villanova Game Thread

We had a total of 6 assists for the entire game
Teams that share the ball well have that many (or more) by the end of the first half

I quit. I'm tired of investing time, money and emotion into this team and having to ride the train home with a headache. Watching Pointer try to go baseline in one of the key possesions of the game after a TO might have been the tipping point for the game and my fandom. There's no enjoyment going to these game just misery so why waste my time. I'll just watch on TV from now on and change the channel when it's winning time and we pull the old folderoo again.

No complaints about the coaches in the Nova game. I do have complaints about the Big East refs that seem a notch below prior standards. At least 3 bad calls against St. John's  may have been the difference in the game.
That said, our poor execution in the last five minutes by almost every player on the floor is what did us in.  For all the time outs Lavin burns, he did fail to call a couple in the last few minutes where it became obvious the team was coming unglued. Not that players like Pointer or Greene ever seem to get whatever message was conveyed during the time out. Greene will NEVER play in the direction of Hooper. They cannot be in the game at the same time.
Missing 4 or 5 lay ins under the basket speaks to athletes that still force themselves into poor shots under the basket.  Those easy shots were big reasons we lost.  We can't afford to have Sanchez play as soft as he does to have any success. I am very disappointed in his game.  We seem to have at least one incredibly overhyped player every year.  This year he wins the award.

Kudos to Nova who have few weaknesses and are the obvious best team in the Big East.  The wins against Kansas and Iowa were no flukes.
The easy part of the schedule starts and I fully expect 5 wins in a row.

Add this game to the list of frustrating ones...Penn. St., Xavier, Syracuse and now today. All 4 of these games should have been won.

I still refuse to quit on these kids and Coach Lavin, as they can still get it together and go on a streak.

But, missing so many layups and easy Js like I saw today and we aren't winning many more games. The clock is ticking and ticking fast. BUT, we still have 16 more games plus the BET.

I am still rooting and still hoping, but it gets harder and harder to do. Ah, the pains of being a fan of the red and white.

What's your top 3

Does anyone here seriously think SJU will eat over $2 million in salaries just because we lost 3 Big East games?
I am more upset that the coaches have used a very soft sell on recruits where to date we zero coming in next year and may be losing ground with 2015 kids. That could leave the team in as bad shape as the last Norm Robertsbteam.

It's not rocket science why St. John's isn't winning games. Shot 37.5% against Syracuse. Shot 30.9% against Xavier. Shot 39.7% against Georgetown. And shot 34.3% against Villanova.

The team can't shoot. Period.

And we shouldn't be that surprised because the team couldn't shoot last season either.

Excellent point...and one that gets overlooked. When we had the pick the number of wins thread, I was a little more conservative in my estimation for this very reason. Our shooters range from very mediocre to pathetic. We will never win against quality teams with this fatal flaw.

Does anyone know a treatment for Greene Scream, a sore throat that occurs whenever I lose vocal control watching the STJ offense stop moving whenever PGIV (does not stand for intravenous point guard) tries to probe three spots, burn nine seconds of clock and allows all mismatches by the opposing defense to be resolved, and then gives the ball up for a hurried shot by someone else, thus keeping his low turnover numbers protected?

Great analysis of the game '72. I like it because I think your observations nailed the game on the head.
I am always crushed by a loss but I enjoyed the way this game was played. Our guys played a full 40 minutes with aggression and showed what they could accomplish under control. Everyone has to admit that we all thought they would win this until about 3 minutes to go; we haven't seen that in losses this year except for Syracuse.
No were not getting any better. Were as good as we are going to be this year right now but that's good enough to win as long as we can eliminate the lapses when smarts go out the window and the guys put on their superman suits. It happened only twice this game but at unfortunate, critical moments. It usually occurs for most of a half.
I'm not giving up on STJ or on the season, ever. There were times during Looie's first 6 or 7 years when we couldn't win an in season tourney which was a big measure of success at the time. Coach Mulzoff came in and won three or four while substituting for Lou, and we wished we had Coach Lapchick back or anyone for that matter. Lou, however, was always good a good face for this program and it eventually came around.
It will as well for Coach Lavin who, by the way, is also very good for this program. I just hope it's soon.

Sir Dom and PG IV do not know their limitations and the fact that they are on the court during key times speaks to our lack of leadership from our coaching staff. Missing so many layups is unacceptable. During the stretch we fold against good teams every time. Hard to fathom things getting better any time soon. So discouraging but posting has become somewhat therapeutic. :woohoo:

As I told my buddy at the game today, if we can just learn to put the ball thru the hoop (I'll take a jump shot or layup at this point), make free throws, rebound & defend, we could be a really good team.

Some say we can't score.
Some say we can't play D.
At this point the only thing for certain is this is not a good team. The recruits are not as good as their ranking (or hype to appease Otis), and this coaching staff is not earning their money.

I'd like to take a quick moment to apologize to Joe3. I was very critical of his love for Nova hoops but he was right on target with that one. I know you're reading Joe, congrats on the win today.

As for our performance on the court there were 2 key plays that I think really turned the momentum. The first was Dom lifting his pivot foot in the lane and getting called for a travel. The second was when we had a 3 on 1 with Jakarr with the ball and Phil to his left, D'angelo to his right. He chose to pass to Phill who got to the paint, stopped, turned around and took an off balance jumper. Both took the wind out of our sails.

I also thought Dom played way too much down the stretch and some of those minutes should have been given to Max. I also thought Branch should've gotten some of Phil's second half minutes. Branch can at least make a play.
