Villanova Game Thread

shooting by players at div 1 level requires confidence. lack of same ,except for Harrison is the only explanation for so many missed layups.. hopefully coaches wild try to build some confidence in the players.

As I told my buddy at the game today, if we can just learn to put the ball thru the hoop (I'll take a jump shot or layup at this point), make free throws, rebound & defend, we could be a really good team.
Lol. That's like saying to a football team...if you only could run, catch and tackle, you would win the Super Bowl!

This was so bad that the police were questioning Kranmars after the game because they said him taking his kid to watch these games was child abuse

Exactly ; ) Hey at least we can block shots from time to time.

Some say we can't score.
Some say we can't play D.
At this point the only thing for certain is this is not a good team. The recruits are not as good as their ranking (or hype to appease Otis), and this coaching staff is not earning their money.

You stayed home?

It is all very frustrating. I doubt that we make the NCAA even if we run 5 wins against the next opponents. Who knows, you cant count Providence out they may beat us too. Hopefully they can beat Dartmouth

Crowd was pretty flat on both sides, then the Nova crowd got pretty loud as they edged out in front late in the game. Disappointing to see so many Nova fans in the 100s near midcourt in what is supposed to be SJU season ticket holders with plenty of points. I have to think that SJU holds those tickets out as desirable game of tickets rather than give the best to long time supporters of the program.

Agreed. Lack of quality wins will be the death knell for the NCAA hopes of this team, in terms of an at large bid.

I actually ventured out to the garden and took my dad to his first Sju game. Like another poster said the crowd was pretty subdued until the end when nova started pulling away. My dad is not a genius but he asked how come St. John's keep missing open layups? I just shrugged my shoulders.

Yes. Its not worth my time or wallet trekking into the city on a weekend. But my two seats went to a fellow poster and not a Nova fan. I'd rather burn the tickets than sell them to an opposing team

I have noticed that myself and wondered whether it is SJU or MSG that has control over those seats. ie- Does MSG require that a certain % of expensive seats be available for sale, as they know that Cuse and Nova fans will pay top $$?

Very disappointing loss today.
Villanova is a good -- not great - team. Game was very winnable.
Sampson and Sanchez were terrible. Sanchez had a few mismatches and instead of calling for the ball chooses to rotate to weak side...Sampson just doesn't seem to have the ability to impose his will on anyone even with a height advantage.

Scariest thing is it appears as though, outside of Jordan, all others seem to be at their ceiling.

I was at the game and thought we didn't play terribly until the final five minutes. Did we miss a bunch of easy layups? yes. Did we get outworked on the boards? yes. But we were in position to win at the end. We blew it. It' really disappointing. Reminds me of the failed expectations of the Felipe Lopez years...

Just got back from the game after drowning my sorrows with a cheeseburger from Rare bar & Grill. I must say, that was the best part of my day.

As others have said, this was a very winnable game. It did not look like the #8 ranked team against an unranked opponent, who is also winless in conference play. I stopped counting missed layups and putback opportunities after five.

I also thought this was one of the worst reffed games I've ever seen. So inconsistent with their calls and first they completely ignore all the traveling done by Nova, and then it seemed like they called traveling on Nova every other time they had possession. I don't believe they cost us the game, because the refs' calls were just as horrible against Nova, but these refs should be "under review."

It was very disappointing to see, and hear, so many Nova fans there. But what can you expect from a fan base whose team is mired in last place and doesn't seem to play well together. Even though today was a 180 from last week's game against the Hoyas, we still looked discombobulated. I'm concerned about this next game against Providence.

For the first time since I became a season ticket holder, four years ago, when Lavin was announced as our new HC, I am questioning whether it is worth renewing for next year. Let's hope for a better outcome on Thursday night.

It's not rocket science why St. John's isn't winning games. Shot 37.5% against Syracuse. Shot 30.9% against Xavier. Shot 39.7% against Georgetown. And shot 34.3% against Villanova.

The team can't shoot. Period.

And we shouldn't be that surprised because the team couldn't shoot last season either.

Today, it wasn't our shooting, it was out 'layup-ing'. We shot 23-67 today for 34.3%. There was at least 7 layups/bunnies that we just flat out missed. We make those, our shooting goes to a respectable 44.7% from the floor. Oh yea, and we win the game.

Today wasn't about shooting, or who was shooting, or who did this or didn't do that. Today, and pretty much this season, has been about concentration. It's about not fouling someone 65ft away from the basket, or fouling them on a 3pt at the end of the game (penn state game)....things that are nothing more than a complete lack of concentration.

And I'm sorry, but I don't think a coach can really help a player concentrate on the game. That is something that they need to do on their own.

Excellent points Jumbo! Indecsion, lack of confidence, concentration, basketball IQ and making the easy plays hard are mental deficiencies. Perhaps Mary Lavin should end her Yoga classes with the players. I know that if I spent 30 minutes with her when I was 20 I could not concentrate for a few days afterward. LOL!
I hate to blame the players alone for the team's poor play but the lack of cohesiveness this year has a lot to do with players like Sanchez and Sampson freelancing at the expense of the team as a whole. The slow development of Rysheed Jordan as the point guard has also hurt tremendously. It is safe to say he will not be the ROY.
If those three players could ever play as a unit along with Harrsion there would likely have been a couple of more wins than losses.
Lavin's job is to hammer home the point to both Sanchez and Sampson that our games are not for their personal tryouts for the NBA.

Coach Lavin put the players in a position to win today, same can not be said about Georgetown game.

Stick with the lineup today and roll with it, and maybe they mesh by BE tourney time...

I'd like to take a quick moment to apologize to Joe3. I was very critical of his love for Nova hoops but he was right on target with that one. I know you're reading Joe, congrats on the win today.

As for our performance on the court there were 2 key plays that I think really turned the momentum. The first was Dom lifting his pivot foot in the lane and getting called for a travel. The second was when we had a 3 on 1 with Jakarr with the ball and Phil to his left, D'angelo to his right. He chose to pass to Phill who got to the paint, stopped, turned around and took an off balance jumper. Both took the wind out of our sails.

100% on that PG IV shot. Hard to believe we can't even score on a 3-on-1.

I did check out your seats and was going to be very po'd at you if I saw Villanova blue, since our section had plenty of Villanova fans. But you did do the right thing, and there were SJU fans in those seats. This game (I bought three more tickets, drove into the city parked, food etc) cost me $350over my season tix and yea it costs a lot just to get in and have something to eat or drink.
