UNC- ASH

To me this is the worst loss on campus since the UC Irvine loss in the final year of the Lapchick Tournament. It's a loss like this that makes all those UCLA Lavin haters actually look like they know what they are talking about. And we have 2 road games to start Big East play, man things might get interesting very quick after this game. OK, I got that off my chest, we can only hope this game somehow serves as a wake up call for the rest of the season.

Additionally, this team is still feeling the effects of its brilliant prior coach, who ensured that his successor would need to start over again with a completely new team in his second season.

That being said, the current staff needs to do a better job.

You're kidding me, right? The program is in year three under Lavin and they've lost against San Francisco and UNC Asheville

And let's not kid ourselves ... they are going to be blasted in Big East play

This team is in its second year. Remember, everyone graduated at once due to Norm's recruiting prowess. So Lavin had to start from the ground up in year two. This team is still very young, but the coaching staff needs to do a much better job.

Theyres no excuse for this..young teams do very well in todays college ball this isnt the 80's

Im not saying they have to be title contenders but they should have been a team that is in the tourney this year

The blame for this loss hangs squarely on Steve Lavin.

The St.John's team does not run a coherent offense and its defense appears too eager to get a steal at the expense of basic hard nose defense . IMO the St.John's players look like they are more interested in making the SportsCenter highlight film than they are in playing fundamental basketball with smash mouth defense.

Don't get me wrong, I am a Lavin fan but his strength is recruiting and providing sizzle to the program it does not appear to be an X's and O's guy, which is why he needs a Dunlap, Blaney or like experienced assistant.

Lets hope that tonight's loss with loss of the 17 point lead will have the motivating effect on the St.John's players as the 2010 loss at Fordham when St.John's squandered a like large lead.

Here's the difference: I haven't seen this team attempt to play defense this season

Game after game it's the same story

Plus, I have a legitimate question here. Has anybody seen any type of improvement from the second year players? Everybody wants to talk about how much better they'll be in the future, but how about we talk about the lack of improvement in the sophomores

Agree.... Can't continue to blame youth on our play. Many young teams win and win big in today's NCAA. It's been that way for 20-25 years. We have several sophomores who logged a ton of minutes a season ago, so they've had their baptism of NCAA hoops. There is sufficient talent and experience on this team.

There isn't any chemistry and they play shoddy defense (outside of blocking shots).

The Sophs have improved.

However, when the offensive philosophy consists of running a weave until 7 seconds are left on the shot clock then hope and pray that your chucked shot goes in, you'll rarely have success.

I laugh a little during timeouts when I see Lavin grab the clipboard because I know he's not going to actually draw up a play.

And I hope people here stop bringing up the 2010 season. Those were Seniors who had some experience under their belt.

Relax guys. This is a super young team that doesn't have the skill just yet. Branch was only pegged to go 8-12 minutes tonight for a reason. The reality is that Sanchez was the guy this team needed to avoid losing to teams like UNC-A and USF while the youngins matured.

Things will only get better and this team can still improve to the point where they are an NCAA tournament team by Feb/March.

Can't be on an NCAA tourney bubble with losses to USF and UNC Asheville on your résumé. Sorry.

I thaught in the beginning of the season we had a legitimate shot at an NCAA berth. Now ,barring a miracle Its not going to happen. We seem to have poor fundamentals and we do not look like we are improving. Dissapointing. I also think Lavin should have gotten an assistant that is an xs ond os expert. IMO thats his weakness. I also think he should have not redshirted Gift.

I was at the game tonite and someone correct me if I am wrong, but it seemed ias if we were tired out there. I also think that Lavin may be substituting too much. Nobody can get into a rhythm. I think we should be going with an 8 man rotation.

There is absolutely no reason that Branch should not have played more down the stretch (in place of Greene). He obviously has great court sense and is the only one of the team that can create for others. In my opinion, we lost this game because our only point guard was chained to the bench when we needed a leader on the floor.

I was there as well and saw this coming from very early in the 2nd half...even remarked to my friend when we were up 8 that our guys booked this game in the W column midway thru the 1st half...and played careless the rest of the way...

I found this game to be very frustrating (I guess because you could see it unravelling). For the life of me, I don't understand our crowd. We show very little emotion - good or bad. There were situations during this game where the crowd should absolutely have been screaming to support the team and others where the frustration should have been apparent. Yet it's like a morgue -- other than the students.

I'm sorry, but this is not an NCAA tournament team

The current group doesn't play defense and chooses not to work under the boards

That is not a winning formula

I thought the under .500 years were over once Norm was ousted. Guess they are here to stay with Lavin.

I'm so disgusted with this team right now. All that I ask for is a competitive team in which I can be proud of. And I guess that's just not an option anymore.

Missed my first game of the season-was going to watch on espn3 replay but now will not bother. talked to a friend of mine who agreed with many of the points many of you have already made. One thing I just have to say-it is time to admit that Dom and Amir were vastly overrated coming out of high school and IMO are actually below average BE players. I'll leave it to others to continue to sing their praises. If it isn't enough to watch them play just look at their numbers.

+1 it's a particularly difficult pill to swallow with all the optimism that accompanied lavin's hire and first year. What's worse is many are predicting that Harrison and Sampson will not be back next year. I'm trying to find a silver lining here, but am at a loss. I am so frickin sick of this team losing.

The silver lining is the practice you can get if you think real hard in coming up with more and more excuses.

It's safe to say that they don't provide us with what we need. If they were on a top-10 team, they would be the 8th and 9th guys in the rotation, play 10 minutes a game at most, and Dom's D and Amir's rebounding would prove invaluable. You'd hear the coach praise them left and right, saying "we wouldn't win without those guys." Unfortunatly for us, we need scorers to complement Jakaar and D'Angelo, and that's one thing neither of those guys seem to be able to provide consistantly.

I would like to know who thought Pointer was the 25th best recruit last year. He has some nice attributes, but whoever thought he was that, has some serious questions to answer.

Garrett was rated #99, so he was only top 100 by the skin of his teeth. I've casually observed over the years, that once you get past about #60 or so on the list, it's really a crapshoot as to how these guys will turn out.

I hate to talk badly about Dom and Amir bc they both appear to be very good kids. But I have been thinking the same thing. From what we have seen to date, they are both below average big east players. If either of them turn out to be as productive as Paris Horne, I would be thrilled. Just goes to show that recruiting rankings don't mean everything. Dom and Amir have plenty of time to have solid careers, but I've seen plenty of less heralded kids come in better-prepared to contribute than them.

I think they would benefit from some better ball movement. I'm so sick of seeing d-lo go one on five. We are playing selfish ball.
