Uconn game thread

Like I said earlier... We need a top 100 PG for next year. Maybe top 50..Along with a true center.

Barkley, in my mind, was the last truly great PG we had...Cook? played 1 year and was good, not great as a frosh. Ingram never played to 5 star status at St John's..

Hatten wasn't a PG BUT, WAS GREAT.

OK this has been bothering since the game. Napier or Boatright wouldn't beat their man one on one, it was typically a pick by the forward just past the three point line for the PG. In the matchup zone-who has the responsibility -is the man fighting through the pick, or is it the the responsibility of someone else. I think St John's was confused by that play, and that's the reason Drummond had his 16 points and Napier shot 5 for 6. Napier and Boatright owned the middle today, and it was clever by whoever put the play in because St. Johns never adjusted correctly to it.

I don't disagree, but there are literally no top 100pgs or Centers still uncommitted. Our best bet is to find a pf to compliment Gift, and another combo guard. We really need to see D'angelo of Phil continue to develop. I don't think we're going to bring in anyone who will be good enough to significantly replace them in the backcourt.

Those two are our guards of the future IMO.

Don't know who the staff is looking at, but that should be an option I agree. At this time last year we knew they were pursuing Nuri and GG. This year there hasn't been alot of chatter about JUCOs the staff is pursuing.

Looked alot like the Kentucky game, obviously they scouted that game.

4 out of 5 starters had good games. PG did not have his best performance but who would not be scared to death playing the national champs on the road  in your second big east game. They lost Kemba but have two very good pgs and added Drummond who could have been considered the top recruit in 2011. UConn is just a monster right now that will only get better as the season goes on. Never happy to loose but we cannot be disappointed in the performance we put out today.

I enjoy this team, not even getting upset over turnovers or poor shots. Only 3 turnovers in first half. Just look at the difference the one year experience makes for both Napier and Lamb. BTW, I still believe Napier palms the ball frequently.
Sir Dominic Pointer is a player, all over the court, quick hands and power dunks, talk about improvement each game.

All this team needs is another 2 big guys, a shooter and a guard. We will be hard to stop. Nice way to claw back, but not enou today. the game was tougher for Uconn than the score might indicate.

thats a pretty big wish list considering we havent had any of the above for many years

Achiuwa is a good big, I have news for you. He just needs help up front. We need an Obekpa/ Gathers Andy maybe another. our guys aren't bad shooters, but are young and need some work. Need more though. I don't think it is a tall order. We have an excellent core already. All promising players. Just need to fill our roster so we can just keep clearing the bench with talent like we have now. I thought we matche up ok, but need more size up front and more depth t guard. We don't necessarily need a pure PG, but we need another option to Greene. Uconn has Napier and Boatright. We just need a few more upper level bodies.

The more I watch us play the more i realize we should really target obekpa. We need a defensive presence inside. also allows us to move mo to the three where i think he can dominate and really make our front line scary.

Dom needs refinement, as does amir, but they will provide us energy and defense for as long as they are on this team.

Lets hope Darrick wood comes in and is able to compete because his shot is something we desperately need

Obekpa would be awesome next to Gift up front. Both good rebounders, mand Obekpa has springs and can block tons of shots. I too would like to see us land Obekpa as a target for the center spot to play with Achiuwa now and replace him. Drummond and Oriakhi are not 6'11 towers but rather 6'i" athletic and strong PF/C types which is what we need.

Oriakhi hasn't been impressive this year, probably because the center belongs to Drummond. Just think what Uconn would be without Drummond. The school just draws top flighted centers - damn it!

Our front court players were as good as Uconn's....our guards ...not so much. That was the game in a nutshell! I loved our effort! SJ had 5 frosh play most of the game against a top ten team and If it were not for our guards shooting 25 % this game was actually winnable. Add a point guard and a power forward along with Wood and teams will not want to play SJ next year !!

Anderson and Gathers.
That's how close we were.
Staff knew exactly what was needed.

We are that close to being monstrous. I really hope Lavin can grab those few big time players in this recruiting class. Our core of players really is that good. We just need 2 big guys and a guard or two. Any combo of Obekpa, gathers, Sampson would be phenom.  I'm not counting on it, with Lavin being out etc, but I think the class will be better than we are estimating right now.

Agreed Tis and they will go out and get the best available talent to complete those 2 positions.

im pretty sure uconns front court players would disagree with you. i dont recall g.g and harkless swatting balls out of the air.

Swatting shots isn't the only stat that matters. Oriakhi wasn't great. Drummond was the #1 player in the class. SJU needed one more frontcourt player. We had Gift, but we're missing either a PF or C. If we have a top notch PF or center, our frontline with Gift and Harkless is really, really good...

The Johnnies were getting 14-- Sir Dom missing those 2 ft's with 2 seconds left cost me the cover.
there goes the beer money and taxi money tonight :)

I'll give you credit for betting it though. No way did I have the b@lls to touch it

At least I got the push :cheer: .

Too bad you missed the game!
The starting front line of Uconn was :
Oriakhi----6 points, 7 rebs
Drummond --16 pts, 11 r
Daniels----6 pts, 0 r
That amounts to 28 points, 18 rebounds

St. John's front three.....WE ONLY HAVE THREE!
GG------16 points, 5 rebounds
Pointer--14 pts, 8 r
Moe------16 pts, 6 r
That is 46 points, 19 rebounds!!!!!

SJ's front line was actually as good and better in both points and rebounds.
Next time watch the game as a ST. JOHN'S REDMEN FAN!

The funniest part of this is if you read the Uconn message boards, they think SJU is scum for playing to the buzzer against the Uconn walk-ons. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I never thut the losing team had any obligation to be clowned by walk-ons trying to score their first point. The onus of "class" is on the winning team with respect to playing to the end. Losing team has every right and should play to the buzzer. If they want the clock to run out, then hold onto the ball and waste time. What a bunch of $hitheads...

If coach Blaney had put those crappy Uconn scrubs in at the 3 minute mark and not the ONE minute mark, SJ could actually have pulled this game out! LOL!

I was really impressed with your big men. Athletic as hell....In your list though, you forgot Orlander (PF), also Lamb and Giffey played a bunch of minutes at SF since Boatright and Napier were playing together in the backcourt, so it's not easy to look at a boxscore and determine how many pts/rbs the CT front line had.

I was obviously, I thought, joking about Ingram. Yes, he was a 5-star recruit, but he obviously never played like that here.
