Uconn game thread

Actually came away impressed! This iscabtotal rebuild and should take it at face value.... A total rebuild with some really nice talent, the lack of a guard who the ability to penetrate really hurts us....add that and another big an another wing/athlete we will be no joke!! Patience is a virtue

All this team needs is another 2 big guys, a shooter and a guard. We will be hard to stop. Nice way to claw back, but not enou today. the game was tougher for Uconn than the score might indicate.

thats a pretty big wish list considering we havent had any of the above for many years

Achiuwa is a good big, I have news for you. He just needs help up front. We need an Obekpa/ Gathers Andy maybe another. our guys aren't bad shooters, but are young and need some work. Need more though. I don't think it is a tall order. We have an excellent core already. All promising players. Just need to fill our roster so we can just keep clearing the bench with talent like we have now. I thought we matche up ok, but need more size up front and more depth t guard. We don't necessarily need a pure PG, but we need another option to Greene. Uconn has Napier and Boatright. We just need a few more upper level bodies.

The more I watch us play the more i realize we should really target obekpa. We need a defensive presence inside. also allows us to move mo to the three where i think he can dominate and really make our front line scary.

Dom needs refinement, as does amir, but they will provide us energy and defense for as long as they are on this team.

Lets hope Darrick wood comes in and is able to compete because his shot is something we desperately need

The Johnnies were getting 14-- Sir Dom missing those 2 ft's with 2 seconds left cost me the cover.
there goes the beer money and taxi money tonight :)

I'll give you credit for betting it though. No way did I have the b@lls to touch it

Just as a side note, but no way Drummnd is 6'11". He looked barely taller than Garrett and was shorter than Harkless when teams shaking hands at the end of the game.
H e may not be 6 11 but he played like he was. We could use a true center.

Obekpa would be awesome next to Gift up front. Both good rebounders, mand Obekpa has springs and can block tons of shots. I too would like to see us land Obekpa as a target for the center spot to play with Achiuwa now and replace him. Drummond and Oriakhi are not 6'11 towers but rather 6'i" athletic and strong PF/C types which is what we need.

I think Drummond is closer to 6'8" but he is something like 260+ and mega athletic at that size. He's not a true center in the nba, but more likely a PF. We still had no answer, because he's strong and mobile and Uconn had a few solid bigs.

sju would be a good destination for Obekpa. Gift is leaving after next year. He could be our C of the future and would get plenty of PT, even next year.

It was all set up for you with those free throws. That UCONN walk on had no shot vs.SJU's starters and their pressure D. That's why betting on college ball is a real gamble. (pun intended) ;)

UCONN on probation and Drummond is a walk on...the NCAA at its best...what a joke organization!!!

I read that he is a "walk on" but was not aware of the details...beyond the Calhoun suspension I have forgotten the remaining penalties...did they have scholarships cut? Is Drumond's status as a "walk on" skirting that penalty?

Are we recruiting any top 100 PG for 2012-13? This team will need a quality disher/scorer next year. it's been way too long since we've had a good one.. Barkley was the last one..

Did you forget Omar Cook ?

Early on, Drummond was going to reclassify for 2012, so Conn went ahead and filled its scholarship roster. Then he decided to come this year, and they gave him one of the other guys' (already awarded) scholarships. (Bush move by Conn in the first place.) So recently Drummond said "the kid can have my scholarship back." Nice move. And hence, be's become a walk-on. Of course, he's a Conn resident, so the tuition is probably reasonable, and it's also a strong indication that he'll be one-and-done next year, expecting to be earning NBA money, and paying back any loans he needs to take out for this year's tuition/room/board. So, no skin off his nose, as they say. I could be off on some details, but that's the big picture.

4 out of 5 starters had good games. PG did not have his best performance but who would not be scared to death playing the national champs on the road  in your second big east game. They lost Kemba but have two very good pgs and added Drummond who could have been considered the top recruit in 2011. UConn is just a monster right now that will only get better as the season goes on. Never happy to loose but we cannot be disappointed in the performance we put out today.

Just got back from the game, sat in the UConn parents section, my son has has a friend on the Uconn team. A few observations:

1) Uconn shot lights out from three, over 50%-we shot poorly-that was the difference. St. John's make two more threes, and they make two less, we have a chance to win.
2) St. John's was making it hard for UConn, with hands in their face-but I'd say 10 times we got in trouble with our aggressiveness, due to Napier and Boatright breaking us down with the dribble and finding someone on the alley oop or kicking out with a three. They are sophisticated, savvy PG's, and we don't have any. I'm not critical of Phil, but he's not a classic PG.
3) Refs were fair, if anything the calls went our way, esp. on the others team court.
4) UConn fans, at the least the fans at the XL Center-not very sophisticated.
5) As others pointed out, we could sure use a PG running the show, and a legit 5-Gift is a hard worker but he needs help-and how about a little boxing out on our part-although the matchup zone is not ideal for boxing out.

just came back from the game. for a sold out game, the crowd wasn't really loud. more like a wine and cheese crowd. st. john's had no answer for drummond.

Now going up to $25,500 a year for in-state residents

I disagree about Drummond costing us the ballgame. While he got 11 rebounds, it was the PG's penetration that led to almost all his baskets. I think this game belonged to the two point guards and Lamb, for hitting clutch threes.

Gift jumps out whenever a guard penetrates. It's hard, but he's going to have to stay on his man and hope help comes from elsewhere.
