UCONN back to Big East?
The BE made UCONN, not vice versa.
Also made Pitt.
Jim Calhoun made UConn.
And in doing so he kept the BE relevant in the 90s when the conference slid into mediocrity.

Can't believe so many of us sound like we should be expecting the current UConn program to roll all over us once they're in the conference. Hurley may have an easier time recruiting 2 to 3 top players from the area than he's had with the AAC, but that doesn't mean our current staff won't be able to match him or do better. Where did all the optimism about our program suddenly go? Bottom line: This is not Jim Calhoun's UConn team; it's a team that has struggled since his departure and whose future success -- let alone dominance --is not guaranteed.

Great points, Red.
Here’s my view:.
As the great Shakespeare wrote: “past is prologue.”
And while I expect us to fare much better this time around, because of our AD and HC, it seems to me that UCONN has little to lose and more to gain than any other school in the Conference.
That’s just bugs me, but yes I hope and think we’ll be able to compete against UCONN and the other power teams in the BEC.
Just dislike ‘uneven’ deals.

This is exactly how I feel. Dan Hurley is definitely not a bad coach. He's annoying but he seems pretty good. I just don't think that he's a great coach. Jim Calhoun was a great coach. Even if we hate him it's undeniable the guy was a winner. Until they prove that they can sustain a winning tradition without Calhoun they don't really intimidate me anymore.

Nobody should fear competition in our league. The best leagues like the ACC, SEC, Big Ten all thrive with lots of excellent programs. Better conferences with more strength are a bigger draw for recruits period. UConn is a big-time northeast hoops program that should be in this league.

Redken hit the nail square on the head. This is not Jim Calhoun's UCONN anymore than UCLA is Wooden's Bruins. They will be one of several good teams in the big east and will make the league and rivalries stronger. For most on this board they will be the team to hate; like the analogy to Yankees - Redsox. I believe the days of teams taking over MSG when they play us are over.

I'm still not picking up on why this is good for SJU and for the BE?

Uconn doesn't bring you the Boston TV market. Want to paint a broad brush stroke and say the New England market? Feel free but I and many others aren't buying it.

They aren't needed to sell out the BE Tournament either.

The conference schedule is now going to be 20 games like the B10. Is that good or bad? Could go either way. That could mean less high profile non conf games. It could mean more or less patsies.

In 6 years in the AAC they have had 2 good years. Yes they won a National Championship (their first year there) albeit with black clouds over it. And for the love of god lets stop with the Danny Hurley savior talk. If I could only prove this coming from the same people who likely hated the idea of Bobby Hurley coming here.

I'm just not seeing how this is good for the current members of the BE.

x1000! Perfect post! This is not Calhoun's Huskies...I expect them to be much more competitive in the BE, but not world beaters like Nova has been mostly. I doubt they'd be top 10...I'm expecting 17-25 or so in their good years. Again, I hate UConn, but I understand how important it is to have a prestigious conference and remain one of the best conferences in the nation. With UConn, we may never fall below top 3 in the nation. Like it or not, without Villanova we would be seen as a "meh" conference. Adding UConn takes the pressure off expecting 1 team to carry the conference. Yes, Xavier had a few runs but their coach is gone. Calhoun is one of the best coaches ever...Hurley is still finding his way. Remember, in 2013 the last time we played UConn we beat them. We smashed their teeth in during the 2011 season. They are not Duke...they have come completely down to earth in recent years. I invite the competition and just think of all the buzz UConn vs. SJ/PC/G'Town/Nova at MSG. Talk about a hot ticket.

The Big East deal with Fox expires after the 2024 season.

Media consultants advised the Big East that the addition of Yukon is advantageous because it not only increases the inventory of games but makes the media rights more marketable.

Below is a link from the Hartford Courant which illustrates that Yukon's desire to join the Big East relates th the $41M deficit which its Athletic Department had this past year.

Because we will get significantly more money for one. We will also be associated with another well-known major brand in college hoops. Do you want pundits to be questioning whether or not the Big East is major? I know many do consider us major but not all. What about casual fans who say the Big East is dead now? Those get put to bed adding UConn. Do you want more eyeballs for our games? More exposure, more money? Do you want ESPN to be forced to talk more about the Big East instead of ignoring us mostly? The BIG EAST logo is plastered on the front of the main Men's College Basketball page on ESPN.com already. MSG is ours forever now. If UConn succeeds as many expect, we get paid for it as well.

Media consultants

I hope they realize linear is quickly becoming a thing of the past.

Our 10 team Big East proved we can have the #1 attended conference tournament at MSG, win 2 national titles, send 7 teams to the Dance, set up conference rivalries with the B1G/Big XII, etc... all in a very short time period WITHOUT UConn. If UConn bolts (doubtful since their football will tank even further), then we go back to present day where we're already elite.

We will earn more money with UConn's addition, through a new TV deal, our annual MSG game, and even stuff like more Tournament credits. Also, they will bring a lot more respect to the conference.

Anybody who dislikes this can't complain about how Nova is the only team to advance to the Final Four in the new Big East. We just added a team that won the National Championship during year 1 of the new Big East. Can't do any better than that.
C’mon dude. We’ve been a one team league.

Take Nova away and we’re a step above mid-major.

First decade of original BE there was success across the board: St. John’s, Gtown, Nova, Syracuse, Providence and Seton Hall all made the FF.

Haven’t come anywhere
close to that parity.
Precisely.

Two corner stone programs is a must . 3 or 4 puts you in the discussion as the top hoops conference in the nation. We aren't even close to that right now.

This is a "big picture" issue. Its not about how many games St Johns will win or lose over the next 5 years.

Look at it this way...the ACC is dominated by Duke and NC every year. Do you think the other schools in that conference would be happy if they left?

Sorry but Uconn's last 6 years don't get me or anyone else wet inside.

Who has called the BE dead recently? I don't recall it.

And I'm sick and tired of this ESPN hates the BE crap. Get over it. ESPN cares about the biggest story and thats it. They care about the NFL, the NBA, Duke and Zion. They don't care about stories B, C or D all they care about is A.

MSG was always ours forever. If you or anyone else thinks that wasn't the case I have a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn too.

Show me the additional money they are bringing in and I'll listen.

I'm totally for adding a 12th team. It's a no-brainer move to fix the scheduling issues with an 11 team league. I'd much prefer to have a 16 game regular season with 4 additional non-conference games to schedule than a 20 game conference schedule.

As you know, I wanted to bring Uconn back after they lost the game of musical chairs with the football conferences once Syracuse hit the "self destruct" button on the old BE. And I've always thought Gonzaga was the way to go for expansion so I'm glad that they are in the discussion at this point.

If you have a 12 team conference with name brand recognition the likes of Nova, UConn, Gonzaga then you have a better product to sell than if your cornerstone programs are Nova, Xavier and Butler.

I agree that I don't want a 20 game conference schedule. But I don't know who a 12th team could be. And while this leaked about Uconn being 11 the way it has and not hearing about 12th team I think it's clear they are only looking at 11.

I just don't see how Uconn is going to be a cornerstone team to join Nova. The problem is right in front of our eyes. The BE was built on the success of 3 urban city schools and right now only 1 has had sustained success the last 15-20 years. If SJU and Gtown got their act together they could join Nova and wave the BE banner.

more reasons some on board think UCANT is great for the BE
6. hurley is the john wooden of our times. all the 5 stars will want to play for him or play against him
7. UCANT is the only division I school that the BE should consider. storrs metro area covers the entire NE
8. espn aka conn is the center of the basketball money world. espn will soon hire all the people they laid off.
6. it is a shame that hurley only has 10 fingers/toes, as soon enough he will have 21 rings.
7. St louis and their market. etc.. no other school would consider joining the BE
8. BE can now move its hq to Bristol to be near the espn armored trucks. no one has fox1/2 on their tvs.

If.

If St Johns and Gtown got their acts together in 4+ years you could have (in theory) 3 cornerstone programs that were home grown. Not sure what we've seen from STJ & Gtown that leads one to be willing to bet the conferences future on their going from irrelevant to a national brand in that short of a time, but one has to have a dream I suppose.

Add Ucon and Gonzaga and you have 3 programs that are national brands today. Yes, Uncon's star has started to fade, but that has largely been due to the conference they are in and their poor choice of a replacement for Calhoun. Both of those issues are easily fixable.

Their hope is that restoring rivalries with Villanova, Georgetown and others, in addition to regular games in Madison Square Garden, will restore the old Big East feel and reinvigorate the fan base.
