How ironic that just two days ago Stu Jackson put out a tweet about bad calls and NBA players challenging w/ technology...

Just imaging LJ Figueroa busting out his tablet on the BE refs last night !!!

All losses sting, but this one is monumental on the 'pain' dosage inflicted on the Team, the Fans, and the Program.

For die hard fans like myself and I'm sure most others here, this has not been an easy loss to get over. In what was such a big game for us, we essentially had it taken away from us. The insult of explanations that have followed only make it worse.

Thank goodness we have a forum like this to vent our frustrations and ease the pain.
I emailed Mike Cragg. I know it won't matter, but why the heck not?!?
An official protest coming from the Admin would at least send out the word, the BEC must not have 'favored brands'.
You do something, so protest.
They f'ed us the game, and we just supposed to sweep it under the rug and say oh it's ok.
Nah screw that.
I'd play the rest of the season under protest. A number of BS happened.

Continuation in the 1st half, I thought there was no continuation in college, ref blows the whistle as heron was shooting was free throw. The bs whistle on the foggy play, and the no call walk on Manu, its obvious just to much vs, refs wanted shu to win, bet if no steal by figgy then no whistle would ever be blown

I will send an e-mail describing my disgust at what happened and is not happening, but in truth, the St John's staff and administration should take the lead on this, and not just shrug it off. It would show respect and dedication to the players who are working to make St John's proud and relevant.

Glad to see people are reaching out to the commissioner's office. I just sent the following.........

Ms. Ackerman and Mr. Jackson,

I am contacting you regarding the St. John’s vs. Seton Hall men’s basketball game on Saturday night. However, perhaps more importantly, I am also contacting you regarding the statement issued by you, Mr. Jackson, on behalf of the Big East Conference.

As a college basketball fan for over forty years, I have a very clear understanding of what I saw on that play. The embarrassing error, and stunning decision to camouflage it, reach far beyond a routine bad call. Then, adding insult to injury, our own conference issues a statement claiming a “timing issue”?

While I know St. John’s will suffer the unjust outcome, I believe it is incumbent upon you to clarify or amend your initial statement. Specifically, I am asking that you provide explicit details involving the “timing issue” or an amended explanation of what actually transpired.

I am looking forward to learning more about your leadership style.

Sincerely,
James

I suspect your email is the best. This forum allowed us to vent. Letters to anyone wont't serve much of a purpose. The error was caused by the ref thinking the play was to be ruled dead, presumably because he thought the ball was out and Figueroa had stepped out. The rest is either application or misapplication of the rules. Nothing will come of emails.

Pretty certain that any disputes related to the clock, their official explanation, may not be protested.

There are a mound of rules that I would be pretty sure few coaches study because they are so rarely applied. Not a defense of mullin, but once a whistle stops play when the ball and player are in the air and possession not clearly established, what do you do? I still don't know what the rules state

It states that you default to the possession arrow. The rule was retweeted by Fran Fraschilla.

Beast, the sob ref was 2ft away from fig, he was clearly in, I'm not buying that

The call was wrong, the replay review a cover-up, the Big East response ridiculous, but our staff's passive reaction is the real mystery. I can't believe any other head coach would have had Mullin's reaction. If we end up one of the last schools out of the NCAA tourney, we can look back to this game.
Mullins post game reaction was "I know they don't fine college coaches but I'll still keep my thoughts to myself."

Boeheim would have freaked. How would you feel if Mullin got T'd up by one?
Please, after a call like that, Mullin had a long way from his reaction to getting a T.
Two things on this, 1 If you watch the replay the ref told Mullin LJ stepped out of bounds and 2. Chris Shearn from YES Network said on twitter that they never showed the replay of LJ clearly one foot in bounds in the arena. If thats the case its possible never saw that LJ was inbounds from the far end of the court. This is just a guess.

The cover-up of the bad call is worse than anything. They should have gone to the possession arrow at worst. Totally ridiculous they couldn’t overturn that during review at the end. I think it’s bogus, as was the 3:1 advantage the Hall got in calls in the second half. Maybe ref had money on the game? I’m not getting over this one.

We can bemoan this till game time tomorrow. Then its time to move on.

When a bad call rouses DocButler out of his dormancy, it's a serious thing. Good to see you post Doc.

Nice Response from Mike Cragg. The route they are taking is as expected.. Not much else they can do. Hopefully results in BE issuing some sort of statement.

Thank you for sharing your passion and interest in St. John's and for our men's basketball program. In great part, It is your devotion and investment into the school and our athletics program, as to exactly why I wanted to be at St. John's when looking for the right fit as an Athletic Director. I love it and share that passion for wanting it to be great, and for St. John's to be a prominent part of the national fabric of sports in NYC and our country.

With the strongest of convictions, I believe we have that opportunity in front of us!

Last Saturday night did not end with the desired result or the proper outcome after L.J. made a tremendous "winning play" on defense. In the end as administrators, coaches, and fans - that is all we can ask - that the players play hard and with passion ... I believe our staff and players have achieved that success for all 13 games this year.

We have properly and privately communicated our thoughts on the final minute of play to the Big East office - and that, again, is all we can do in a professional, classy, and efficient manner. Those are the standards we will uphold here at St. John's as a proud member of the conference.

All that being said - we must now focus on the immediacy of facing a Top 20 team in our home arena tomorrow night! Coach Mullin did that exact thing in the locker room after the game to the team - turning their attention immediately to the very fact of moving on to the "next play".

Most importantly, there is no doubt we need you and many, many others with us in the building - not only tomorrow night - but throughout the season as many times as possible. That is the very first step in making sure we seize upon these "moments" for a positive outcome and helping our program back to achieving successes at the highest levels on a consistent basis. Clearly you have done that over the past many years…THANK YOU!

Again - appreciate your note and hope to meet you soon!

Go St. John's!

Mike
