Transfers

About a month ago I heard from two people I respect that there was chatter BJ Johnson was going to transfer to SJU from Syracuse. He is evidently a buddy of Jordan & is from Philly. I've heard mixed reviews about this slender forward. This all may not come to fruition, but I thought I would post it. Today I saw an article referencing JB's expectation of high roster turnover this year. Link is below;

Any personal opinion on the way he plays? I haven't seen much from him other than our game this season.

With the strong recruiting class coming in, a transfer makes sense.

@jeffborzello: South Carolina will visit with Seton Hall transfer Jaren Sina, per his father. BC, Michigan, Rutgers, GW and Rhode Island also involved.

Dad finished at Rhode Island after leaving SH, right?

Here is another guy who is apparently available. Coming from Cornell, I am not sure he would be interested in SJU academics, but the playing time might be tempting. My guess: Duke, Northwestern or BC.

The Ivy League has some wacky rules. When Cornell lax player Rob Parnell hurt his ankle his senior year he actually dropped out of classes a week before finals so the academic year wouldn't count for him so he could return for a 5th year.

I went to SJU from Cornell...so it happens.

My friend's cousin, Alex Rosenberg, was first team all-Ivy andforced to drop out of Columbia this year to preserve his eligibility. Wacky for sure.

I guess Queens is probably not close enough to Philly to get a waiver, right?

looks like some games he plays more than others.....a few very bad shooting games has his overall shooting percentage 30%......game i did see recently he did have a great game at notre dame last week

he was a 4 star player and ranked 82nd in his class of 2013

I thought you said you went to Columbia when someone called you dumb? Max transferred from Harvard.

I did grad school at Columbia after SJU.
Good call about Max...this stuff happens, but Cornell has been pretty awful the last few years. I'm not sure I'd be interested.

My bad . I realized that wasn't your post and changed it. Columbia is a great school. My daughter goes to grad school there.

Paultz mentioned BJ a month ago and I commented about him then. I think he's a great talent who just wasn't meant for JB's harsh type of coaching. He gets berated by Jim and BJ takes it hard you can tell when you watch his demeanor.

Honestly, he's friends with rysheed, queens is close enough to Philly, and I think after being with Boeheim this year, Lavins nice guy approach would lure him in immediately.

The other team I follow closely is LMU...The consensus of the fans is that Evan Payne did not fit his coaching style and was too much of a non-team player so Dunlap drove him out. He did not even nominate him for league honors so he was left off all lists. I know you guys on this board think highly of Dunlap and I still hold out hope he knows what he is doing and is building us a solid program, but let's just say LMU fans are not happy with him at all so far. Would be awesome if St John's could pick up Payne, but wishful thinking on my part.

Fan of him from a basketball standpoint (though I never liked the defense he drew up here). However, based on this, and the year he filled in for Lavin here (the year as Bobcats coach may apply too), he seems to have a major problem handling people, and personalities. That kind of stuff is OK if you are winning, but at 8-23 they will rebel against you.

Best use of his skills, IMO, is as an assistant at the high-major level, for a head coach who's strengths are recruiting, and dealing with locker room issues, while Dunlap more or less handles the on-court stuff.

I was of thinking similarly to what you just posted, 61982. That is why there is more to coaching than just X's and O's (like you, I'm a fan of Dunlap).

There are much bigger supporters of him then me. I heavily criticized him the year he was in charge, in fact (doesn't mean I didn't realize he had strengths).

Basketball-wise, Payne would be a strong fit. Very good sixth man type or third guard in a small lineup with Sampson and a good point.

Same AAU program, Ohio Basketball Club, as Craig Randall. Obviously on different teams, just sharing.
