I spoke with the blogger below last night who used to cover hoops in Westchester NY area & just saw his post. He noted Matic is involved in this recruitment fwiw. He was also at New Mexico briefly before going Juco.

Pass on this kid
He started 37 games and averaged 10 minutes per game with paltry scoring & rebounding
We need a kid who can come in and contribute right away, not a reclamation project
Next...........

I would have rather kept Adonis DeLarosa then sign this guy.

Our 6'7 starting "center" averaged 4 points and 3 rpg in over 20 mpg. If Nikola played 20 minutes and averaged 8 points and 5 rebounds he would be better than Yankuba Sima and a valuable 7 footer off the bench. Bigs develop slowly. If a last resort pick up, we can do much worse. .......like an unneeded 6'2 guard. ;)

Yikes, seems like we are getting desperate. So much for a plan and big in the bag it would seem. Hope I am wrong.
agree, talk is college hoops is hemorrhaging with transfers, we have ships to give, why not load up and shoot for the top, if not this kid can be a fall back option. Either way we seem to be in good position to improve greatly. Our core is back, and Mattyboy has ships to hand out. Go get um Mattyboy!! Go Johnnies!!!

I see him as a back up center. He is big and mobile. Seems better coordinated than Sima. Played too few minutes to judge but was pursued by Georgetown and others late and may be a better option than Alibegovic who prefers shooting three pointers than playing under the basket. IMO, get TWO BIGS now to fill out next year's roster. Will not be any worse than who we are losing, especially Freudenberg.

Agree. The guy's 7'-2" and he averaged 2 rebounds and close to 0 blocks in 10+ minutes per game? Given the gaping hole we have in the middle, we'll need to do better than that if we're going to crack into the upper half of the BE.

I guess in college a kid at 6'8"/210 is a big???? Not in my book. But I hope whomever we bring in can contribute immediately (in the post defense, rebounding areas). Some scoring out of the post (a reliable 10-12 a game) is all that I think we realistically need with our other players.

Can't tell much from this video. If he could run the court without being the last one down, play good defense, pass set picks rebound I'll take hom

Those are JC stats. Its not like he is sitting on the bench on a high major program and can't get minutes because he is behind a stud. Hope we can do better. Need a big for next year that provides an immediate impact and a younger big who can develop.

I don't see anything wrong with grabbing a guy with size like that for 2 years. It's only 2 years and his sheer size with mobility like it seems he has could help in certain situations. Add another more bruising PF/ C like Kante, along with his buddy Yetna and a sit out transfer guard. It would spread out classes a bit, add a few big bodies up front, including so,em young talent to develop. I mean if he's horrible, no need but his size certainly could potentially help.

Matt's "Mystery Big" better be solid.

Think solid is the right adjective Paultz.

Easy to overstate the need given the incredible weakness it was this year, but we don't need 1 player to clean all of that up. Clark should help. Just need another quality player with more traditional 4/5 size to supplement further. Williams clearly a loss, but Clark + another big could make a big difference.

The first 6 in next year's rotation should provide good rotational flexibility. If you take out Lovett and Owens as the bookends, Ponds/Simon/Ahmed/Clark can all flex to at least 2 positions. Even setting aside last year's weakness inside, what that rotation is missing on paper is a physical 4/5 that is somewhere between Clark and Owens in terms of size. Don't think it needs to be a star, just solid as you note. Defense/rebound/finish at rim.

Can't understate it either however. This team needs that type of player to make material improvement next year more realistic. Mussini, Yawke fine as back-end rotational players, and if we pick-up a project/4 year type big great. But just having size/athleticism is not enough, need someone capable of clearly being part of Top 7 and potentially starting.

Scekic actually has lots of solid D1 offers to him including Creighton, TCU,UCF, USF, SDSU and many more. Most of those offers are very recent from March. Looks like Jamie Dixon and Gregg McDermott see something in him so that's important to note.
