Transfers SJU May Get Involved With

Quick someone tell me who Jeff Beverly is, also what conference UT-SA is in!

football player with some bulk. 6'6" 250lb. I like the sound of that but according to this article Iowa St is his first choice. ZB says he visits Monday May 8

STATS:

Jeff Borzello @jeffborzello
Visits for UT-San Antonio grad transfer Jeff Beverly:
• Iowa State: May 3
• Loyola Marymount: May 5
• St. John's: May 8

The inference from the article is that Iowa St. has not yet offered. Can't fault the staff for trying, but this smacks a bit of desperation. Kid wasn't even on scholarship last year.

Going after a 250 pounder who averaged almost 16 ppg smacks of desperation?

May not have been on scholarship but was their leading scorer at 15.8 points per game. Just saying (don't know if he is a good fit or not).

Believe it or not, weighing 250 lbs does not guarantee success. And given the league, I'm skeptical that his 16 ppg avg is a fair barometer of success in Big East play. I've never seen him play of course so I'll be thrilled to be proven wrong if we ultimately sign him.

Played on a real shitty team and points were scored against shitty competition. The grad transfer we need(ed) was a 6'9 or bigger center so going after another forward could be interpreted as desperation. Of course it may not be desperation if we are pursuing him as insurance if Bashir Ahmed is on the fence about returning to school.

I wouldn't be opposed to the Rooks kid a big scorer the rebounding numbers aren't bad when you factor in he played 17 mpg
Played in a high major conference great size, only a 1 year commitment. Good numbers relative to PT. Would take him this late in the game in a heart beat.(Rooks).

People complained we are too skinny. Along comes a 250 pounder who can fill minutes and score a little if we get it to him in close, something our guards should be able to do. People still complain.

I don't see anybody complaining. I think it's fair to temper expectations

If he's willing to be our 9th or 10th man why not.

If we do not get a center he will likely be a 6th man because he would be much more productive than Yakwe. Kid has offensive moves and looks to score which Yakwe does not. According to reports he has his sights set on Iowa State unless Matt convinces him otherwise. ;)

If ISU, a consistently solid program, sees something in Beverly, why not SJU? Not the 6'9" banger we all want, but choices are limited it appears. Just one tape, but he looks capable of catching ball & doing something with it in the paint, a deficit for SJU last season.

You see those %? Bashir could probably average 30 in that conference.

The team has open scholarships and he is a grad transfer. So I t does not hurt future flexibility . Worst case is he is a big body for practice and insurance.
Best case he contributes the staff know what they are doing

If he wants to come here you welcome him with open arms. He use to play football primarily in college, (tight end) so he doesn't shy away from being physical and played a position that required decent hands. Based on the video, he clearly has post moves and can hit a mid range. I do not care if he is only 6-6, he plays strong and can finish down low. I hope we can add him to the team.

I've reached an admittedly irrational point where I am fine with anyone who weighs more than 210 lbs and can dribble. That said, the kid made it pretty darn clear he wants Iowa State.

It's not clear to me Iowa State has offered. Based on the article you forwarded, if he comes here, it will likely be because Iowa State did not see enough in him to give him a scholarship.

I agree with other posts that signing him is probably Ok given our apparent lack of options at this late juncture. Beverly would give us an extra big body to practice with and he potentially could eat up a few minutes. I'm skeptical, however, that Beverly will fill the void we so desperately need to cover.
