Transfers SJU May Get Involved With

Hutch plays a run n gun game so his minutes are a reflection of that style. Where he played more minutes he was more productive. His 40 minutes ppg would be 15 pts and 8 rpg.p if you are a fan of forecasting.

Nikola Scekic @scekic1995 has really proved himself as dependable scorer and high efficiency threat at Hutchinson. JUCO big is high major
- Zach Smart

This is the same guy that tweeted the news about him visiting USF and St. John's. He tweeted this in March of 2017, so it's pretty recent. I don't know how he came to this conclusion with those numbers, but it seems like he has actually seen him play.

I know Smart a bit from his days covering hoops in Westchester, NY & s/w him yesterday. Zach now is Florida based & is close to Nikola's HS coach. Fwiw, he feels this kid can help a college program. However, I was told yesterday he is not a primary SJU target, just a backup option. We'll see.

Hard to believe a 10 min a game JC player could help us. He may be ok for a 10 th man. But Bash was a JC AA stud and he had his problems against BE competition.

March article

strong finisher sounds good. "elite passer" if he can effectively receive the ball and quickly finish in the post, I'm sold at the very least as some have said, as a 4th on the depth chart could not hurt to have an aggressive 7'+ 245lb in practice

Not the surest formula. Using it, we could project that Elijah Holifield would average 28 ppg if he played 40 minutes.

His amount of PT is odd for someone who is 7' 2" playing JUCO ball. Something doesn't add up. Unless they had several "bigs" that they felt they had to play. Bashir would have played one year with this guy, right? The practice video shows basketball competence, but there has to be a reason why he played so little at Hutch.

Suspicious of low PT.
Reason-Lack of Wind or Conditioning (Ed Searcy) or injury (D. Williams)?
I'll trust the judgment of our coaches on this one.

I certainly don't want to accuse a journalist who I don't know of being unethical without more evidence, but it seems like this Zach guy is pumping this kid up as a favor to the HS coach.

If he were coming straight from Europe, then I'd have more confidence because the coaches there seem to love burying younger guys as a matter of principle. But he was in this country at a juco that gets a lot of recruiters strolling through and we've never heard of him until now. And he couldn't get on the floor for them.

Something is not adding up.

could be like Knight said a matter of wind. It is not at all unusual for big men to need extra time to develop game conditioning. G'town had a kid a few years ago they could only play a few minutes a shot.

other than that whatever the hype I will trust the staff to make a good choice yes or no. no one is saying that he is an impact player. my initial reaction was NFW but the arguments otherwise make sense. At worst big body in practice and we need to add several bigs now, and I find all these 6'0 150lb guards being recruited, frankly depressing.

I get the small ball stuff but it shouldn't be either/or and I hope Mullin isn't so fixated on this thought that he has some philosophical flaw on the subject like arguably, Don Nelson did. You need size. I think this was a big difference for Nova national champ vs Nova early exit.

Not having Daniel Ochefu was a big factor for Nova. It will be interesting to see where Nikola ends up. You are also spot on with staff pursuing guards we don't need next year. Neither Ponds nor Lovett would be ready for the NBA next year either and hopefully Muhammad from Jersey is still interested. Need BIGS......even practice Bigs because we are going nowhere without a serviceable post player.

"Ready" has nothing to do with it. We are lucky to have Lovett back next year. I'd be shocked if he hung around for another year after that. Ponds is no certainty to return after next year either.

I agree we need bigs desperately, but it appears we have three or four scholarships to fill. If staff doesn't feel they have a good shot with the high school targets, I'm not opposed to a guard transfer who has demonstrated the ability to play at a high level. We need to continue to fill the cupboard. Whether the transfer guards we're looking at fit that bill is a separate question entirely and one that I don't know the answer to.

Not sure LoVett or even Ponds comes back after winning the National Championship next season.

Fans of forecasting would also note that he averaged 6 fouls per 40 minutes. NBA material!

His stat line the last 6 games of the year for HCC, all with his team scoring 85-100 points:
Butler CC 2 min 0 pts 0 rbs
Coffeyville 5 min 0 pts 1 rb
St. Petersburg 23 min 12 pts 2 rbs
Odessa 4 min 0 pts 0 rbs
NW Fla St 8 min 4 pts 0 rbs
E Fla St. 11 min 4 pts 3 rbs

His workout tape looked pretty decent but if he is able to do anything at the BE level he should have been manhandling teams in JUCO. Instead he was basically a non-factor. The article linked above was about him in HS. He's two years removed from that and still glued to the bench. Really?

[/quote I haven't liked the list of names on this thread lately. But if could get a quality grad transfer big and Heron, Matt deserves his raise and we can be very optimistic.
