Transfer Portal

Btw there absolutely was a point this off-season where he went nuts. Then we landed Taylor then he went on the roll. That comes from someone inside the school

Good to know. As I (and many others) suspected, he wasn't recruiting at the level he wanted to during that first month. With a few of the additions he was probably just padding out the roster to ensure we had enough players at each position. At that point even Pitino himself likely didn't anticipate a strong first season. All that matters though is he figured things out and did so during the first off-season. Well done.

I doubt Pitino would have taken all the guys he did early if he knew how quickly this train would get rolling out of nowhere.

I don’t love openly recruiting players committed to other programs, and I think these bonus NIL “walkons” are bad news. We have 3-4 guys that won’t even play as it is. The spirit of scholarship limit was to keep it fair for everyone.

Man how I love reading this and I'm usually humble. mjmaherjr said F everything I'm 53 now and just want to win. Throw my morals in a bag and light it on fire in a bag with a pile of shite and let hurley step on it

Someone -- and it really seems like it may be us -- will eventually force the NCAA to do something about this. I do wonder if institutions will be more important than coaches on this though.

Does Hubert Davis have enough power to effect change if he secretly complains to the NCAA? I think Roy did. I don't think we'll ever move in enough same circles as Duke, but can Sheyer wield that much power? K certainly did. How many powerful elder statesmen are left who would 1) complain; and 2) actually be heard?

Very Few left

I see Ledlum just pushing more of Zuby’s minutes to center for this one season, sharing time with Soriano which isn’t a bad thing, as Soriano will need a break and Zuby has a few more years. I see Ledlum sharing the PF with Slazinski/traore. Somebody likely has to redshirt but no idea about any of that. It’s up to the coaches to find the PT and keep the team happy, but the Duke formula of winning games seems to mitigate a lot of that and i think coach Pitino is a mater at it.

If we land Ledlum, we are a deep and nasty team entering this season, coached by one of the best. Frankly I don’t see how we don’t land Ledlum at this point with an NIL deal as it’s the one position we wanted to add to regardless.
Agreed regarding the roles of Ledlum and Zuby. Remember back in May, when we had three scholarships left and Pitino said, “We need three players. We need another guard, we need a big-time scoring guard, we need a power forward and we need a backup center. Once we do that, it’ll be over." Dingle, Ledlum and Zuby fit those roles perfectly. And to think we also added Wilcher on top of those three potentially!

What I was told this week is Rick has his mojo back he was humbled and he doesn’t like it so now he’s out for blood and will crush our enemies

For the scholarships I'd think this is a one time thing, with how unusual a situation it is getting a major influx of NIL money right after almost the entire roster was set. If St. John's didn't test it then someone else would, so I don't have a problem doing that before any official rules are set.

Tbh as long as the staff isn't doing anything that could get them in trouble with the NCAA (the above I doubt is breaking any rules), then it's the right move to just go for it. These are really good players being added and the whole "building" thing never worked for us in the past and is much less likely to going forward with transfers and NIL. College basketball and college sports in general are rapidly changing, who knows if they'll still exist in this format a few years from now. Maybe schools get permission to pay players and St. John's can't compete without football money.

Who knows what will happen 2-20 years from now, but the last thing this program needs right now is to get off to a slow start similar to all coaches from the past couple decades (minus Lavin year one). This is the NIL/transfer era, treat every year like you're aiming for the Final Four, and even if you fall short of that (example- winning a Tournament game) it'd still be a major success for this program.

I have to agree. But mostly from the perspective of how do you keep all the kids happy if there are not enough minutes to go around? I'm sure when many agreed to play here this season they expected a bigger role than they will now have. I just hope it doesn't blow up in some way.

I think the truth is that we have a ton of guys with only one year eligibility left who will certainly play. Nobody is getting buried for multiple seasons or anything like that, which is different from other scenarios where teams are recruiting over their roster with freshmen. Guys like Dunlap can wait a year to pick up bigger minutes.

We have a nice combination of some young talent with a few years but we have brought in a lot of experience to win right away. Need to create a buzz to get this train out of the station and Pitino knows that.
