Transfer Portal

““I’m a man of my word,” he said. “I told every coach that I’m going to take all five of my visits, give them all a chance and go from there.”

““When I get a feeling on something I’m going to move on it,” he said. “Before deciding though I want to take all five of my visits, see if I’m comfortable living at that school for the next 8-10 months, see if it’s a good fit for me, and what’s the roster going to look like. Those will all be factors in deciding on my next school.”

So much for a commit this week. We’ll see!
Greatly respect that from this kid. Standing up to his word giving everyone and equal shot. So even if rp blows him away it's like ok now beat that in terms of how much i like it. Know nothing of this kid but after reading this I really like him. Very stand up! Great character

After reading this he said the most about at at. John's pitino and Masiello. My initial impression after reading that article is sju is number one

Which is what I’ve been saying while disagreeing with Fordham not that I am 💯 on anything NCAA related anymore.

Didn't this come when Rawle Alkins attended a Knicks vs. Warriors game at MSG during his official St. John's visit?

Why shouldn't dollar$ play a role. Everybody else in America including the coaches and athletic directors are trying to get paid in full so why not these "kids". Try paying coaches and administrators with "free education" and room and board and see how well that goes over.
Ironically "free tuition" and "room and board" for a 17 year old kid is still a very BIG factor for the majority of high school basketball players.
I'm sure the tens of thousands kids playing high school basketball would all be satisfied with just a free ride in college as would their parents.
Every year there are approximately 500 kids who are starters on their prep teams that are "recruited" by coaches from schools at various levels of competition.
A large number if these kids will attend D2 schools tuition free. No NIL no special dorms or training facilities.
Of the 100 or so that will be valued with NIL offers, many will decide to transfer because they envisioned a bigger "participation trophy". Not that most even have a remote chance of playing professional basketball for a significant amount of money. They have been raised to feel entitled.
They all go to basketball camps. They all play with much better players. Yet, they all feel entitled now to a salary even though they cannot guarantee that they would make any team better.

There were 4 and 5 star players out of high school. The level of talent that some here expect. Well, thank God St. John's wasn't their choice last season because it would have been a waste of NIL money.

In fact, for most of the players demanding ridiculous amounts of NIL compensation it is a waste of money.
Why? Because the goal every year for all D1 programs is to make it to the NCAA TOURNAMENT.
This year schools like FDU, Princeton, Saint Mary's and FAU all made the round of 32. Some 4 and 5 star kid's teams didn't even make the tournament.

If another option appears in the next couple weeks Pitino and staff might not keep this kid's seat warm.

I think he visits Penn State later this week, Pitt in early-May, and has seen San Francisco, and big bad Georgia already.
Maybe he goes to Penn State, and cancels on Capel?

Not a "must get" player to say the least with better players entering the portal as we speak.

Portal moves quickly. If kids actually have a No. 1 choice they need to jump on it instead of taking free trips to be wined and dined.

I suspect we don't really have a huge NIL pot lined up immediately, but if we do, it's time to make a statement and get Ty-Laur Johnson here.

K. But are we on those other guys, and what's the competition?
NIL-$$$' are on steroids this year.
Maybe we can play with the likes of Mega $$$ State Universities next year, some time, but we don't seem to be 'there' presently.
Plus, Rick knows Thomasson's game.
I think RP wants to add 2 guards and wings (and hopefully a rebounding PF).
It's fine with me if he thinks Thomasson fits in his plans for one year.
I'm just anxious for a couple pieces to fall into place this week.
Here's hoping.

Agreed. Same goes for coaches too. If they have a kid willing to commit they can’t keep him on ice for a couple weeks while waiting out some other kid’s decision. Bird in the hand type thing.

Already surprised the staff doesn’t already have a legit player to build around going forward. Dunlap would be a nice piece sure but Ty-Laur is an actual building block. I know staff is planning on a major 2024 haul but do they really want to have 8-9 spots to fill again next offseason?

Demary Jr was probably 'that' guy, but UGA blew us outta the water.

Free room and board is a nice draw for the one who can’t pull any NIL consideration. For thone who can command high dollar bids I say they should do like Billy Joe and Bobbi Sue and go on and take the money and run.

That’s the way it’s played now. Yes most power conference teams will have to add around 8 players give or take. Half high school recruits and half portal recruits give or take. Following Bama closely this is what they have had to do what with players leaving early or going into the portal. Bring in some high school recruits hopefully during early signing in November and go portaling next spring. Days of 3-4 high school recruits per season for balanced classes and keeping most of them for continuity are over for major conference schools.

After the top 25 high school prospects it becomes a crap shoot. No one knows how well they will transition to college basketball.
Portal transfers with 2 to 3 years sustained success are more predictable and may be a more valuable short term investment for quicker turnaround of a program needing faster results like St. John's.
The only high level NBA quality players staying at one school like UNC, Kentucky or Kansas for more than 2 years are the ones making close to the NBA minimum salary and definitely more than they could earn overseas and the G league.
It's really a cabal between the NCAA and NBA (players union) to further limit younger players who are not franchise makers from making NBA teams so as to ensure veteran players reach a minimum number of years to collect NBA pensions on top of their inflated salaries.
