Why shouldn't dollar$ play a role. Everybody else in America including the coaches and athletic directors are trying to get paid in full so why not these "kids". Try paying coaches and administrators with "free education" and room and board and see how well that goes over.
Ironically "free tuition" and "room and board" for a 17 year old kid is still a very BIG factor for the majority of high school basketball players.
I'm sure the tens of thousands kids playing high school basketball would all be satisfied with just a free ride in college as would their parents.
Every year there are approximately 500 kids who are starters on their prep teams that are "recruited" by coaches from schools at various levels of competition.
A large number if these kids will attend D2 schools tuition free. No NIL no special dorms or training facilities.
Of the 100 or so that will be valued with NIL offers, many will decide to transfer because they envisioned a bigger "participation trophy". Not that most even have a remote chance of playing professional basketball for a significant amount of money. They have been raised to feel entitled.
They all go to basketball camps. They all play with much better players. Yet, they all feel entitled now to a salary even though they cannot guarantee that they would make any team better.
There were 4 and 5 star players out of high school. The level of talent that some here expect. Well, thank God St. John's wasn't their choice last season because it would have been a waste of NIL money.
In fact, for most of the players demanding ridiculous amounts of NIL compensation it is a waste of money.
Why? Because the goal every year for all D1 programs is to make it to the NCAA TOURNAMENT.
This year schools like FDU, Princeton, Saint Mary's and FAU all made the round of 32. Some 4 and 5 star kid's teams didn't even make the tournament.
