Just another footnote to the most embarrassing season in St. John's Basketball history where the decision to terminate the coach before Christmas by a clergyman president ruined the lives of half dozen people.
Are we talking about the players of the guys here that were on redmen.com ? :)

His innumerable successes after leaving STJ bear out your hypothesis.
Name one coach that has ever had success after St. John’s fans and media were done with them?

Jarvis was awesome before. This is a graveyard for coaches. Fran said there are elements unique to St. John’s that he would wish on anyone. We have to many wannabe insiders, media members, and area coaches that feel entitled to access and special favors.

Norm might have missed the NCAA tournament with that Jarvis elite 8 group. Lavin and Mullin maybe win a game.

We were top 3 in the country in rebounds twice under Jarvis. We all remember the weave and lack of killer offense but nobody credits him for strong fundamentals and tenacity on the boards. That wasn’t talent…it was grit and it came from the top down. Go back and watch those teams play Duke on YouTube. Duke hits a jumper and we answer with an offensive rebound put-back.

well norm did make and coached the ncaa tournament this year. So technically thats a success. Jarvis was done. fran was crazy. Mulliln didnt want the job. Anderson was washed up who got fired from his last job for the same reasons we canned him. But thats also the case of any NY sports team. lavin should of stayed but since he was forced out he stopped recruiting. We should of kept lavin honestly of mullin. But here we are today with Rick Pitino, more hype around SJU basketball then ever before. I think our best coach was Brian Mahoney. Now he was a good guy from what i recall but his only record of success was being Lou's assistant. LOL

as far as posh, I heard the SHU was not happening. not sure how true that is. A friend of mine I work with explained how NILS really work. He said SJU not an issue with Repole but other schools that dont have multi millionaire donors might have a hard time getting players to sign in this new day and age.

Jarvis was by far our best coach since Looie (until Pitino, of course), but I think Marilac2 is wearing some rose colored glasses about the end of the Jarvis regime. The team on the court was a train wreck, he had alienated local HS and AAU coaches so much that he said that he was going to stop recruiting HS kids and rely on JUCOs. Did he have some bad luck? Yes. Who knew that Lenny Cooke was going to drop out of school, move to New Jersey and basically never be heard from again? (Not so much with Darius Miles... everyone knew he was going pro, so that commitment was hollow from the start.) Omar Cook should have stayed another year, and that would have helped. And the St. John's admin was a mom and pop operation, without even an actual AD by the end - which was a complete joke. So there is some blame to be spread around. But Jarvis was his own worst enemy in a lot of respects, the team was terrible at the end, recruiting had dried up due to his laziness and arrogance - basically Darryl Hill, Lamont Hamilton and an overrated Elijiah Ingram were all that was left by the end - with nothing in the pipeline. He deserved to be fired.

During the 2003–04 season, St. John's center Abe Keita claimed that a member of Jarvis's basketball staff had paid him nearly $300 a month for the past four seasons.

As a result, St. John's placed itself on two years' probation, withdrew from postseason consideration for the 2004–05 season, and forfeited 43 wins in which Keita participated.

This included the team's NIT championship in 2003, making St. John's the third team in the history of the NIT to be forced to vacate its standing in the tournament.

Jarvis’ St. John’s legacy.

If Posh winds up in the BEC, I'd prefer he lands at Butler, for obvious reasons, lol.
And I think it'd be good for Posh also.
I bet Thad Matta would develop his game.
I hope Posh winds up wherever is best for him. If we didn’t feel we needed him we shouldn’t be afraid of him playing for a conference rival. Probably a lot will depend on how badly he wants to stay close to home.

The irony of that was that St. John’s wasn’t paying him for his basketball skills. They were giving him money to support his family back in his country of origin.

agree on Darius Miles and as for Lenny Cooke there were huge red flags about his academics so both were hollow “commits”.

Why can't 'we' (fans and Posh) both be happy? Lol.
He wouldn't torment us as badly at Butler and Matta might be better for Posh's pro career aspirations.

First of all , with the exception of Soriano , last years team was a 8 th place team and I think you have over valued them individually and , as a team . Their skills did not collectively make them a top finisher in the BE . They were assembled poorly by CMA and no Coach could have changed that dynamic . Each of those players were flawed in some way . Only a few would have made any of the contending BE teams Roster . Soriano definitely and Posh probably . Storr as a freshman might have but , his body of work was limited . Everyone else was borderline .

It’s unbelievable that so many posters think Pitino would or coujd have worked miracles with that group . No Coach could .
While I agree with your assessment of the team, I do think that they had the overall talent-if utilized properly-to have been a borderline tourney team. Now, I don't recall anyone saying that Rick could have worked miracles with last year's group, but I do think that Rick would have been smart enough to;
1. Give up on the Curbelo/Posh experiment early on
2. Get Storr on the court a lot more much earlier in the season
3. Utilize the skill sets of Stanley at the PF position
4. Reign in Jones
5. Have the team focused on D
6. Have some semblance of a half court offense

I'm sure there are other things Rick would have done, but IMO those 6 things alone would have had us as a borderline tourney team
