Transfer Portal Mania

Totally disagree. I had one of the most enjoyable SJU seasons that I can remember. Took my kids to more games this year then they’ve ever been. Loved watching the media/press we got and can’t wait to bring back an even better team next year.

The $100+ or whatever the storm marketing charges is well worth it for me.

One of the good things about my lack of interest in this years tournament means I get to avoid the mannequin NCAA reps at the press conferences droning “and now we will hear from our student athletes”!
Agree. It will be better for the sake of moving forward once “student athlete” is replaced with “unionized university athlete.”

What about Title IX? If you put the men's basketball team on the university payroll, you're going to have to put the women's softball team on the payroll too. And every other sport, whether it drives revenue or not.

How many schools outside of the Power conferences can handle that? I don't know, but I've got to believe it'll be the beginning of the end for many.
Give each team at St. John’s the same percentage of the profit they generate.

Agree with you. The point of my post (maybe poorly worded) was that those giving large NIL money will burn out because the “investment” will see little to no returns. I would say the only way maybe that wouldn’t happen is if we become an elite program again which is possible. I don’t think this model of fans paying salaries is sustainable.

It was highlighted by someone earlier but those donating to NIL will quickly tire of the lack of returns. I love St. John’s basketball but me giving hundreds of dollars (other thousands or millions) and getting nothing tangible and 0 returns just doesn’t seem sustainable. Those who are wealthy got that way for a reason and don’t tend to give money away without some ROI. Give to the school and then get the tax benefits.
I actually think it’s the most direct way for fans to help teams.

Redmen.com posters could sponsor a starter like Dubar for less than the price of a cup of coffee a week if we all chip in 😂

Wealthy people do stuff that makes no economic sense all the time. Yachts, private jets, ridiculous cars, club memberships (I was gonna include watches in there but those have actually increased in value over the last few years). The idea that they have some spreadsheet somewhere with their ROI on every penny they spend is just not true. They may not get tax bennies from NIL contributions but they definitely get VIP treatment. And that's all some of these guys need. They live for that shit.

A guy with the ego of Mike Repole would love to be known nationally as the STJ booster who brought them Final 4s and championships. Probably no ROI but sparing a 3 million bucks is 0.2% of his net worth.

From his Pledge following the Mess at UBS... to his attending the Games Away and at MSG - the interaction with Rick on the sideline... it is crystal clear that He is invested in the Success of the Program.

If Rick and Matt feel that there is a player Worth a substantial payment- i don't doubt Repole will make it happen

My concern is more about relying on one person. This board, including myself, is already willing to hire whoever Repole wants next since he has the NIL money. It's important to diversify our big $$ -- not even from a more money perspective, but from a power and risk management perspective.

But absurdly rich people will always give money to things that won't make them money.

We can’t just rely on one person. That’s a losing strategy. Our fans need to step up too. There has never been a more direct way to benefit the team you cheer for.

And if you can’t afford it, that’s fine too.

5,000 fans giving $9 a month gets you two power 6 starters.

I’d love to see Steve Cohen brought into the fold. Mets-St. John’s is such a natural relationship.

That fourth sentence is literally what Rick Pitino says in his hostage video in the basement of Carnesseca at MSG games.

I'm sure we do have more than just Repole, to be clear. But the upside with NIL is here ginormous. Cohen is definitely a natural relationship.

This year, the "subway alum" showed out. There's plenty of people who want STJ to succeed who make a ton of money and would enjoy doing this. Really happy we have Matt A and the infrastructure to capitalize on this in future years.

That's the other thing...the entire SJU NIL is what, $3 million? If you're recruiting rich guys- I'm not talking retired bond traders with an $8M NW, I'm talking mid 8 figs- they can be a heavy hitter at $100k per year. These guys buy their kids G wagons for their HS graduation. They're not calculating their ROI on that kind of money.

According to the discord/Trilly, Nova and Georgetown are top 5 in NIL this offseason and their full budget is like 5.5-6 mill. This is peanuts for these people.
