Transfer Portal 2022

Sometimes coming home means returning to play in the city u grew up. Other times like in Jones situation, coming home means coming to play w his boys who he’s been friends with since HS. Love it.

Cart before the horse but let’s hope curbelo and Jones are Anderson’s version of Simon and Clark.

This would be (is) EXCELLENT news. Last season was such a disappointment, feels like 22-23 could be what we all hoped last season would be.

Still a few holes to fill unless a few players come back as verified long range shooters. The college game, as the NBA, has evolved as a three point game. To have any level of success, you need to have a few three point marksman. Hoping that Posh and a few guards return with vastly improved shooting.

Love Jones game if he is coming but yes on paper we might be worst 3 point shooting team in recent memory.
Need someone who is going to play that can knock down threes

Obviously better shooting is a need, losing JC & Wheeler. In fairness, staff could not pass on Curbelo and Jones net of getting someone as good with a great stroke. Such guys are hard to come by. With the last scholarship, unless a SJU guy portals today, I assume they are beating bushes for a shooter who can also defend. However, I would not be surprised if they put full court press on Tobe Awaka, a future investment in the middle. Whatever the roster composition is, I think CMA has to figure out rotations to preclude being too one dimensional. I guess Posh and Andre could improve their deep shooting, but will it be enough? Hopefully Pinzon also has coming out year becoming a real perimeter threat too. This why head coaches get paid big bucks.

Frankly, I thought our roster would be meh this coming season, but with its flaws we could have three guys in top 10 in BE and be very competitive. Obviously Curbelo has to show last year was a fluke. Lastly, team chemistry is always a challenge, but maybe Anderson has a better year himself on the sidelines.

Presumably Jones would start at the 4. There’s just one guy on the team who shouldn’t be penciled in as the starter between those other 3. It’s gonna be tough because he’s used to starting and hes only got 1 year left. The other options at the 3 all can shoot it. Maybe Posh can get closer to the 30 ish% he shot as a freshmen with better looks from Curbelo. Paultz’ point about the staff having to take these 2 if given the chance is spot on.

Very happy with both pickups just to be clear
Just can’t understand why every ST John’s coach can’t seem to recruit a kid that can knock down 3’s

Totally agree with Paultz and Mase. From a talent perspective, I never anticipated we could land the likes of Curbelo and Jones. If you can get that caliber of player, you do it. Also agree that we (on paper) are a poor shooting team. The 3-point buckets will have to come from Pinzon, Wusu and maybe Storr. Of course, a bonus would be if we can land another shooter which would mean few minutes for Mathis.

To Mase's point, a line-up of Posh, Curbelo, Mathis, Jones and any of our centers will result in coaches baiting us into settling for the thee.

All that said.....this has been an excellent transfer season for us.

So what exactly happens when the portal closes? If a guy decides to transfer after that, does he just not get the automatic exemption to play right away?

Shame that we don't have Wheeler for another season. A 6-9 stretch 4 that can shoot and provide some support and rebounding down low to whichever of Soriano/Nyiwe/Stanley is on the court as the 5 is the missing piece to this roster.
