Transfer Portal 2022

Wow Cal loses an assistant and a key starter in one day. Kentucky has a loaded roster next year anyway. But Brooks is good.

Would love to get involved with Brooks even if they get Jones. Brooks is a stud

If they lock up Jones this weekend, they are playing with house money in my mind. Try to talk to Bates, Baldwin, Brooks. All of them. Have some balls and show we mean business. Worst that happens is a no.

If transfer portal kids are shopping NIL's...two questions

1) Does Anderson want that type of player?
2) even if he did, can our NIL connections even compete ?

He might not like it, but it is legal. We can't afford to thumb our noses at it. Plus if we have moneyed backers, his hands are clean of it even if he finds it distasteful. We just need to find the money.

I suspect what Wong did would sicken him, but if a kid isn't that extreme, hopefully he's willing to play the game, or at least let younger and slightly less old school staff members do it.

I’m pretty confident SJU has a NIL bid for Jones and other players. It’s just the new world we live in. In the words of the legendary Omar little

That type of player??? Who wouldn’t want the best deal possible? You may not like the system but don’t blame the kids for looking for the best deal for themselves and their families. Would you be “loyal” and stay with your employer if a competitor offered you $100k,$200k, $300k more? How about if your mother was living in a rough neighborhood and you could use the $ to buy her a house in a nice neighborhood?

Boo - I'm not against it

With Anderson, he seems like a coach that wants players to be with a team for the right reasons and will be a good teammate, follow coaches instructions etc....to me he seems less apt to want a player who has stats, and might want to be here more for the biggest $ more than than making into a better player, teammate, student etc

You have to play the game. And as you said it’s legal.

I personally hate it. I think it’s ruining college sports. But I can’t blame these kids for doing what’s best for them. It’s the system I despise not the kids.

As for CMA, he’s a veteran coach making over $2 million a year. I imagine he’s savvy enough to understand the game has changed and will do what’s necessary, within the permitted framework, to effectively compete. Whether he’s ultimately successful is uncertain, but I don’t doubt for a minute that he and his staff are out there busting their butts.

I’ll also add one other thought based on absolutely no inside knowledge. Paultz and others in the know can correct me if I’m wrong. I suspect the reason it took so long with Belo and is taking so long with Jones is precisely bc CMA and the administration are getting these kids competitive NIL deals. We are playing the game. Let’s see how it works out.

Pretty much NIL's have created a version of free agency

You hit the nail on the head with the last part. Recruiting has turned from guaranteeing a player a starting spot and good minutes to here’s a deal for X amount of dollars if you play here, regardless of how well you play. It’s the new age of college sports and if you don’t adapt to it, you will be left very far behind. Obviously CMA knows this and so does the AD, as they have put in place a few programs to help with this.

While I’m sure they were marginal compared to many others being reported, Champagnie and Posh have both been involved with NIL deals in the last year.

I still think if we do get Jones, he's holing off announcing till after the May 1st deadline so no other players leave the program with his committing.
