The Transfer Portal (in general)

Brooks is a stunner and a big reason why Ole Roy stepped down.

You want an established big man at a major school, there you go. Going to be a lot of schools all over him. Remember he was the pre-season ACC POY. Admittedly did not have a great season but still.

Noah Gurley Furman transfer commits to Alabama. Tide now at 15 scholarships with this weeks addition of Gurley, Texas Tech transfer Nimari Burnett and Canadian HS center Charles Bediako. Quite a week for Nate Oats on the recruiting trail who's class was ranked third in the country not counting the two transfers of course. In case anyone is wondering not gloating am actually jealous on behalf of my St. John's superfandom. In all way too early college basketball prognostications Bama is top 10 and in one is top ranked. This coming off two straight  basically .500 seasons until this year.

Bama, you guys clearly hit a home run with Nate Oats. Bama & the Yankees; if you weren't a St. John's fan I'd think you were a frontrunner, but seem to recall you like the Knicks too, so you're more than safe lol.

There are 1500 or so players in the transfer portal. With 352 division one schools, each team would have to absorb 4+ players for the math to make any sense. No every program has scholarships available, and some programs aren't going to land anybody. Even if a few players decide to play pro, how are all these players going to land somewhere? Even if 25% end up sticking with their current school, the math still makes no sense to me. So what am I missing?

what I don't understand is if the NCAA is allowing everyone an extra year of eligibility but rosters aren't expanding (not allowing extra schollies) then doesn't that squeeze opportunities for incoming freshmen?  The policy seems to add a lot of instability as well as limit opportunities for young people.

It would appear to be a good time to be a prep program as the chance that a lot of high school seniors want to wait another year to begin college seems likely.

Rosters are expanded for returning players using extra year of eligibility this season.

I agree there is that ability but I doubt many programs will want to
roster 14 or 15 kids.

Pretty sure that rosters are only expanded if the player uses that extra year with his current team.  A school will not get an extra scholarship for a new player using his 5th year of eligibility.  So there will be players who have entered the portal without a home due to the numbers game.
