The Transfer Portal (in general)

Today’s (4/6) Top Rebounding Transfers:

1) Joel Soriano (SO), Fordham (9.2rpg)
2) Mervin James (SO), North Alabama (7.2rpg)
3) Liam Robbins (JR), Minnesota (6.6rpg)
4) Justin Minaya (RS JR), South Carolina (5.3rpg)
5) Rasir Bolton (JR), Iowa State (4.8rpg)

Thanks for posting. Of these 5, Soriano & Robbins the only real bigs. I'd much rather have Robbins despite one year less eligibility but given the apparent slim pickings for bigs would be more or less happy with either one. Only thing I'll add is schools like Xavier have been successful getting useful bigs from lower levels of competition.

Agree and frustrating for so long SJ can’t competently fill the interior void. Perhaps perception is we an’t develop big men. At this point I think it naive (not your point) to think we can attract top bigs and I feel SJU may have to settle on a guy with a few years left to develop, but brings size, rebounding ability and bit of physicality to mix. On Soriano, expect competition from some high D1 level teams that feel he can help them. Hope they surprise us with someone better, but this seems level of guy SJ may attract,

As far as I am concerned, I want someone in the 6'9" to 7' mold who can rebound a bit (maybe a 6 and 9 guy), play some interior d and give around 20 minutes.  Anyone who fits that bill is fine.  That leaves us to go smaller at times.  But the complete lack of a physical presence has been a bane and we need SOMETHING along those lines.  I don't mind thinking outside the box either to get one.  We can cover the offense in the backcourt and on the wings.

Another factor worth considering is that bigs tend to develop more slowly than guards.  Not infrequently what's required is to take the size and potential and to devote 3 or 4 years to developing the player.  In that regard SJU has had two problems:  the last 3 coaches have not kept the job for more than one full recruiting cycle, and none of them have been stellar at developing the talent they brought in.

I am hopeful and fairly optimistic that the current staff will break that cycle, but agree it hasn't happened yet as far as we can see.  Thinking Stanley may be the turning point, though.

Chris Lykes to Arkansas...bit surprised most had him pegged to go home (Georgetown considered heavy fav along with Maryland).

Arkansas obviously “Transfer U”

Seton Hall has landed South Florida transfer Alexis Yetna, source told @Stadium.

The 6-foot-8 junior forward averafed 12.3 points and 9.5 rebounds as a freshman, and 9.6 points and 7.3 boards this past year.

Will be a key addition for Kevin Willard & Co.

Not good news for K.K. Robinson word is he was told he'd be the man at the PG position next year.  Clearly that's not the case now.

Agree, just give us something that prevents teams from game planning to kill us inside. A 20 minute option for defensive and rebounding would be awesome. More than that would be amazing. I don’t think Roberts was that guy, maybe for 10 minutes off the bench, but not against legit big man for long stretches.

Id be very happy if we grabbed Soriano and then started looking for best available talent.

Realize there is some dislike for Musselman on here but thought I would relate a recent story. Those who have watched an Alabama basketball game and as recently as 10 days ago on a Sunday when they lost to UCLA may have noticed their #1 student fan (a big fellow always wearing a plaid jacket in honor of long time ago coach Wimp Sanderson-present coach Nate Oats has also been doing this). Tragically this young man recently passed away from Covid and Musselman and Arkansas sent their condolences and paid for the entire flower arrangement for his funeral. The outpouring of love, thoughts and prayers from not only the U of Alabama but also from opponent's programs was astounding. The young man was loved by many and his passing was truly heartbreaking for those that knew him.

Worth bearing in mind that Josh Roberts played under 10 MPG and averaged under 3PPG and under 3 RPG.  I gotta believe that Soriano will be able to at LEAST do that if he comes.  The question is whether Wheeler/Nyiwe/Stanley/Traore can replace Moore/Earlington production - I think the answer to that is yes as well.

The leaves the backcourt where right now it is Smith/Pinzon vs Williams/Cole/Dunn.  That's an area that could use some shoring up, it seems.

Right so what we had with him already wasn’t enough. Until we replace him it’s a loss. Wheeler might provide some of the offensive stuff we got from Moore and earlington, but I wouldn’t expect him to be an option at the 5 defensively.

I'm still seeing Cuffe listed on verbal commits as a 2022 recruit.  Did he ever reclass to 2021?

Have not seen him move up a class to 21 yet, unless I missed it

The way everyone is throwing around the per 40 minute stats we should have probably just kept Josh and played him 40 minutes.  Then he would have averaged 9.9 pts and 10.2 rebs

Top 60-ish ranked out of H.S.  Cameo role as a freshman but decent stats. A lefty. Recruited by high-majors and visited KS and IL. Wonder if he goes into the Portal?
