The Transfer Portal (in general)

Per Jake Lieberman

St. John's transfer Josh Roberts has heard from the following schools, a source tells me: FIU, WKU, USF, Chattanooga, Georgia State, Manhattan, Murray State, Towson, UAB, South Alabama, and Troy.

Jay Wright said "we'll all adjust..."  I'm sure he will adjust. Not so sure about most other universities, including St. John's, where recruiting is a challenge already. So a coach has to recruit HS players, recruit junior college. re-recruit both, and then recruit from the transfer portal. Between the NBA, international basketball and the transfer portal, many teams will have to rebuild every season. That is not what college basketball should be about.

who would think (or even hope) he was coming back?

In any event, those schools are on a level where he could enjoy some success.

Realistic choices for Josh. He should contribute to a mid major program
Seems like a nice kid who wasn't suited to play at a high major level
Best of luck to him. I wish him lots of luck and success at his new school

Perfectly said.

Between free transfers and all the extra year guys it would seem to me that many high school seniors that would have received basketball scholarships are going to be disappointed. Really more the extra year situation.  Although teams can go over on numbers many schools will choose not to do so, especially at the lower D1 levels where there is not a lot of money floating around.

I’m sure any 4 star and maybe 3 star kids still looking for a landing spot will be okay but those 2 star kids are going to be in for a rude awakening.

Happy for Josh. He can stay in New York if he wants (likes it here? girlfriend?), but also has a lot of options relatively near his family.

It occurred to me that the so-far uncommitted class of 2021 are really going to be negatively affected by this open transfer pool of players.  If I recall correctly, Champ and McGriff were late signees by CMA; players like them might not be able to be found by newly-hired coaches who might look to the transfer portal instead.  In general, I hope the transfer rules are liberalized going forward--such as a one time free transfer for an athlete--but that we never see this free-for-all open transfer again.

Liam Robbins would be a nice pickup.  Hopefully he wants to experience something out east rather than his stops at Drake and Minnesota.

Of course different levels of competition, but

Today’s (4/6) Top Rebounding Transfers:

1) Joel Soriano (SO), Fordham (9.2rpg)
2) Mervin James (SO), North Alabama (7.2rpg)
3) Liam Robbins (JR), Minnesota (6.6rpg)
4) Justin Minaya (RS JR), South Carolina (5.3rpg)
5) Rasir Bolton (JR), Iowa State (4.8rpg)
