what I don't understand is if the NCAA is allowing everyone an extra year of eligibility but rosters aren't expanding (not allowing extra schollies) then doesn't that squeeze opportunities for incoming freshmen?  The policy seems to add a lot of instability as well as limit opportunities for young people.

Rosters are expanded for returning players using extra year of eligibility this season.

Pretty sure that rosters are only expanded if the player uses that extra year with his current team.  A school will not get an extra scholarship for a new player using his 5th year of eligibility.  So there will be players who have entered the portal without a home due to the numbers game.

Correct that’s what I was saying. If someone decides to transfer to a new school to get their “extra year” they better make sure they will be wanted.

Anyone staying at their present school and uses their extra year of eligibility granted for this year, their scholarship does not count against the 13 schollie limit.

If they weren't assured they would be receiving one of the scholarship spots that count, why would they transfer to that particular school?  They still will be signing a Letter of Intent.

I meant before entering the portal not selecting a school.

A few thoughts on the subject.

First, every player entering the portal looking for a new opportunity is opening up a new opportunity for someone else at the school they are leaving.  If as many kids are looking to move up as move down it turns into just a big game of musical chairs.  If there are 4 kids per school looking for schollies there are 4 schollies per school looking for players.  Except . . .

Was unaware that 5th years can't go over limit if they are at a new school.  What is the % of folks in the portal looking to use their 5th year?  This ends up being the pressure point for schools losing players and looking to pick up replacements.  Especially if they were counting on those 5th year players to stay and play a role and maybe give an incoming frosh an easier transition.

I'm sure, much like we see with GW, a number of these kids are kicking tires while keeping the door open at their current programs.  Could become a situation for 5th years especially. Let's hope those that are considering this are keeping open communication with their present staff.  Worst thing would be for non top tier players to cut off their old staffs, have their schollies rescinded, not catch on anywhere and lose their education.

Plenty of teams don't use all 13 schollies each year so there are spots that might usually go unused that are available provided those schools aren't keeping those spots empty for financial reasons.

Like PM said hopefully this will settle down and level out after the first year.

As of a week or so ago

https://redmen.com/forum/redmentalk...-on-the-verge-of-passing.html?start=10#429973

Pretty funny he started out at Miss St as a signed player (never enrolled) with his FATHER as an assistant to Howland.  Very odd that he then asked out of his NLI and went to UNC again even though his dad was at MIss St.  Now he is back.

I wasn't aware he transferred.  I thought only Kessler transferred.

Jeff Borzello

The SEC has crushed the transfer market so far this spring. Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Auburn, Tennessee, etc. all grabbing impact guys from the portal.

Not a transfer but a top JUCO player Langston Wilson asked out of his NLI with Alabama.  With the staff's good JUCO contacts maybe this is an option.

Had to be processed out of Bama's class after recent transfers in of Burnett and Gurley. Number one JUCO PF and number two JUCO overall would be a great get. Hope we go after him though he is also considering spending another year in JUCO and signing with Bama again next year (hard to see as he's got to be disappointed they recruited over him and didn't have room for him after he has been signed since November).

Per Rivals (from back in September 2020).....

I'd expect a sizable group of schools to enter the fray of his recruitment.  A video was also attached to his write up....

Curious if we were one of the 'more than 40 schools that offered him' last year?  He's got over-the-top athleticism for sure. I'd imagine he'd be a 'project' at the level of BE play---but a very intriguing one with huge upside.
