The one SJU game to watch if you were quarantined
I think that was the game against Pistol Pete Maravich where Looie told the team not to guard Pete. I threw Pete off in the first half but Pete adjusted at half time and lit it up in the second half.
Looie wasn't afraid to use the same strategy more than once.;)

I also was at both the bernie/ernie and the rick barry game. i recollect that both games were sold out.

We beat Miami 2/25/1967 97-70 our largest margin of victory in games against Miami.Yes, the game was sold out.
I thought it was 44 too. It was anAlumni Hall record at the time.
Could not have been 44 because Ernie D came into Alumni Hall in 1973 and put up 41 which was an AH record at that time. Providence won that game 93-90 but the rebounding battle between Marvin Barnes and Ed Searcy was truly something to see.
Don't know if already mentioned, but I would love to see a tape of the win over a highly-ranked Tennessee team at Alumni Hall. There was no local TV. Game scheduled because Volunteers loaded with NY PSAL talent - Bernard King, Ernie Grunfeld, Irv Chatman and Grunfeld's Forest Hills High buddy, Jerry Firestone (?). Beaver Smith was great that night and got a big charging call on Ernie. I don't think the game was even sold out.
Recall Irv Chatman was at all of our home games his senior year of HS and was a 6'9 "garbage man" which was just what our team needed (much like today).

Just about positive it was 39.

It was 39, but according to the article below from the New York Times the date was 12/13/64. Final score was a 79-77 SJU win.

Love this thread! SJU has a rich b-ball history and the responses are an apt reflection. I remember so many of the games that have been cited. During these dark days, this thread is a ray of much needed sunlight. Thanks!

What an awesome thread full of great memories as well as hearing about games I wasn't yet old enough to appreciate.

The other day when the news got to be too depressing, I put on a DVR recording of just the 2nd half from the Georgetown comeback last month. It still holds up :)

Thats one game to be sure will be on alot of our highlight reels.(Not too many here may know what a reel is :)

I had the distinct pleasure to be next to a Georgetown fan for that game and that comeback.

All I can say is like Jackie Gleason used to say:

..."HOW SWEET IT IS (WAS)!!!!!!!!"

That might have been one of the last live action basketball games since this got in crisis mode.

Irv Chatman from August Martin H.S. wound up leaving Tennessee and transferred to Rhode Island.

Came across the 2000 big east championship game against UConn on youtube recently. Brings back great memories, late 90's early 2000's is when I first became a fan as a kid.

Would actually be pretty cool if there was a thread dedicated to old St. John's games on youtube. Would be a good way for fans of different generations to watch different eras of SJU hoops
