The NCAA Tournament Thread

Virginia is a poor team . Colorado Staye equally poor .
For the few watching 2 bad teams playing in the NCAA on a Tuesday night , there were thousands watching that thought this was a NIT game .
The Committee and Tony Bennett must be thankful they got Virginia out of the tourney as soon as possible .
Almost like, no one is watching , let’s get these teams that don’t belong out of the way quickly .

Haven't listened to the pod yet, but I think an easy thing to do would be to publish a top 50 seed-list at the top of January, February, and March. They should also make the conference tournaments actually weighed as a normal game, or else make it a in-season tournament instead. Total waste of time.
Brad talks about what he would do if he was czar of the NCAA and he said he'd do a ranking system starting with conference and go from there - value certain metrics like wins away from home and wins against the field more etc.

Val choosing Collier to represent the Big East has to be one of the stupidest things she could've done.

Why isn't the venom being directed at Collier? Are you even sure it was her decision? He had seniority and I'm sure backing from people (school presidents) higher up than Ackerman.

Collier is the guy escaping the criticism. He should be on TV explaining how he let this happen. Perhaps this is how he wanted it.

Hey, I emailed Collier myself (I was very polite, to be clear)!

The only big OOC win MSU had was Baylor. They lost to James Madison, Duke and Arizona. They played “big” games lost most. Swept in conference by Purdue.

I do agree they played a tougher schedule.

And routed by Wisconsin. They are mediocre at best, but of course the little elf always gets a bid.

NCAA committee chairmen on St. Johns
"When you start talking about St. John’s, they were 4-10 in Quad 1,” "
Lets look at Virginia quad 1 record - 2 - 8 = even if they had 10 quad 1 games that and won 2 more thats 4 - 10

"They had seven opportunities at the Top 3 teams from the Big East and went just 1-6"
Virginia - 1 win over a top 25 same as St. Johns

So why Virginia of St. Johns or Seton Hall?

What am I missing?

He basically said Seton Hall's win over uconn doesnt count cause clingon was hurt! Article shows without clingon they were #12 in the country during those games and didnt lose.

Im not just mad about SJU but the hall and providence?

How come this is happening without outrage other then Pitino. I dont hear Shaheen or providence causing a fit

even Dick Vitale who I cant stand and pays no mind to big east things its outrageous.. Im glad virginia lost the way they did, its a big middle finger to Charles

Here is his email address b.ford@swac.org. I say we flood his email with complaints. especially virginia over seton hall?

I haven’t read this thread all the way through, so sorry if I’m going over an observation already beaten to death, but the ACC should have been the conference with 3 teams going, not the Big East. We should have gotten at least 4 in including St. John’s. Virginia and Clemson, particularly Virginia should not be anywhere near the tournament. And Clemson is on the 6 line! Disgusted with the whole selection process.

Congrats on the Illinois-Chicago job!

You may not have heard but Pitino actually did not act outraged at all with his comments. English of Providence was much more vocal about being screwed and Holloway of the Hall firmly stated that at 13-7 in the BE they belonged in the Tournament.

OK, but that isn't or shouldn't be a consideration for NCAA tournament selection. There's more than one way to win games. One of the joys of the the tournament is watching the contrast in styles - what happens when an uptempo team meets a slowdown team, or two uptempo teams, or a guard-centric team versus a team that plays through the post, etc.

Besides, I happen to appreciate a good defense.
Appreciate good D of course, but imo UVA milks clock in each offensive possession making game unattractive. Obviously not a requisite for tournament eligibility as you noted, but type of play that seems argument for shorter shot clock. Some great defensive teams play at fast pace also.

Great idea. But, here's the current problem...it is quite obvious that the committee gets together at the 11th hour to focus on basketball. They need to have a committee that is in touch all season long...people who actually watch basketball. The podcast reconfirmed to me that these extremely busy people, and they are at their high-profile positions, don't watch games and are simply not in touch with the game. Terrible way to schedule a national tournament!

I really like the idea of having a committee that analyzes the sport from January through March and releases a top-50 seed list each week or month. They can even release it to the teams and not make it public.

Also, make conference tourneys a mid-season event and maybe weight them so that a win counts a little more (1.5 ?) there to make it more exciting and auto-bids MUST go to the regular season champs. Never, ever, ever should a sub .500 team EVER compete for the national title and take a spot away from a deserving team.

Lets talk about the real culprits here, the networks. They chose who they wanted and the committee followed. Espn would like nothing more than the dissolution of the BE. They tried back when they encouraged the split of the BE football schools and continue trying today. CBS would like nothing more than the success of their schools, particularly the big 10 and fox schools being driven down. The NCAA is ballless now that the football schools run everything, it is where the money is.

Hey, I got the IST from you! haha, but the busy schedule thing is definitely a problem. I like the idea of having a mix of former/retired coaches and basketball nerds doing this year-round.

If you want to keep suspense about the bubble, maybe they don't even release a Top 50 list in March. Maybe they just do a Top 25 or 30 list -- it can confirm the obvious, and still leave people wondering where teams are at. Best of both worlds.

I have to say this even Mike Andersons team could score more points then Virginia. Even our walk on team after Jarvis got fired and we had 7 players left could play better.

Make the selections public. The committe chair should NOT be the head of a conference. Have every college coach on their top 64 put the numbers in the computer and bam there you go. Let the coaches decide. If they can figure out presidential votes in one or two days, they can figure this mess out. Even DePaul could beat Virginia!!!!!

Not popular on this board of course but Danny Hurley was very vocal about the selections (or lack of) also.
