The NCAA Tournament Thread

Despite the criticism about Kolek , there isn’t a poster here being truthfully wouldn’t turn down Kolek playing for us .
I believe he has NBA talent .
The big disappointment for Marquette in the BE final was Igohdero . And , he along with Joplin played poorly again on Friday night

For Creighton , Alexander was a disaster . And , Ashworth didn’t shine either .

Hard to believe but I think there's more buzz about the women's doubleheader tomorrow than the men's games this weekend

7 PM - Iowa vs LSU
9 PM - UConn vs USC

Both should be great games with big name stars on each team
Big UConn WBB fan, as I have posted before, was friends with Assistant HC Chris Dailey when she was at Rutgers; what they have done essentially playing with 7 players because of injuries is crazy. Four of the 7 are first year players. They basically play with four guards and the starters played all but 13 minutes last night and that was because one had to sit for 11 minutes with foul trouble.

What's interesting to think about is that it's no guarantee he would have been a huge success here. But I believe that would have more to do with the school than him, especially if you consider where things stood with the program in 2015.
No one is saying he would have already taken us to 2 final fours but we would have been way ahead of where we are at present. These past 9 seasons would have been vastly improved. During Mullin last 3 seasons only 1 coach was recruiting and that was Matt. That never would have occurred with Hurley. As has been said repeatedly he is a relentless recruiter. Nor would the Slice fiasco have occurred under Hurley where we were short a coaching staff member for 3 years , that we paid for 5. And whatever success Hurley had it would have been built upon.there would have been positive continuity.

But why is he wearing a "Manzeer" ?

Most of Johnnies‘ forks in road through the years have led to an abyss. It all about leadership and thankfully Father Shanley landed in our laps. Thank Dominican malfeasance.

Hoping Purdue gets to play hot UConn in final, Edey is a great college player and should pose some problems and perhaps keep Clingan off the floor a bit. That said, I see a competitive game, but UConn guards and bench are much better than Purdue’s.

Nobody bleeds more 'redman' than me, but inconsistency, injuries, learning curve kinks, hero ball syndrome, et al, swung the season to suspect status, and it was all over, given the NCAA's antipathy to St. John's and the BEC.
Here's hoping Bama springs a surprise.
Can't help it.
I hate YU-CONN.
As much as I hate Yukon, their fans, obnoxious Hurley etc. I’m hoping Yukon wipes the floor with them. I want the point to be made so strongly that the absence of The Hall and The Johnnie’s was corrupt.

Kolek is a Seinfeld groupie. ? Forget that and talk about his BB skills .

What amazes me is despite all these recruiting and rankings of HS players there are always the Koleks, Schierman , Knecht , Nelson’s, etc that slip through the cracks of Coaches and Scouts .

There are more certainly than these few but , these were all in the Tournament .

How about the Kid , Griffith on Rutgers ? He’s already in the Portal .

I think we are going to see Edey - Clingan in the Finals .

Who Wins ? I think UCONN has a deeper , more talented line up but , who knows really .

I thought that also but have changed my mind.
I don't believe the NCAA would recognize the 'point'.
They view UCONN as the premier power program in the conference, with Marquette and Creighton distant contenders....then everybody else.
A UCONN blowout of BAMA would not change that perception imo, but probably reinforce it given this weekend's losses by Marquette and Creighton.
Go Tide.

I become a big UConn fan during NCAA Tournament because the power football conferences wish the Big East would wither into a mid major basketball (ie. the A10).

UConn will win the national championship this season which will make 4 Big East Nationals Champions in 9 years Villanova 2016 and 2018, UConn 2023, 2024)).

Hard to trivialize the Big East when one of its teams with the National Championship 44% of the last 9 years.

—-
ps. NCAA tournament unit wins are paid to to the Big East Conference, so UConn wins put money ito the Big East coffers.

Right. That is what we should always want a "guarantee.."

Here are some other non guarantees.

There is no guarantee Pitino will succeed. There is no guarantee that Mahomes won't fall down next year and forget how to throw a football.

There is no guarantee Paul won't include a sobriety test to post on this board thus eliminating 3/4 of the posters here.

There is no guarantee I won't wake up tomorrow and be a UCONN fan.

There is no guarantee that when we wake up tomorrow the Sun will explode and no longer exist.

...

The 5 years post Lavin (4 yrs of Mullin +first year of Anderson) SJU had a league record of 25-65. 40 games under .500. Absent NCAA restrictions save for maybe DePaul that is about as bad a 5 yr BE stretch as a proud school like SJU can have.

If you gave Hurley that same 5 years and don't think he would not have done SIGNIFICANTLY more then you be you.

Danny Hurley can coach and recruit, which is all you need to be successful. I think that some of y'all under estimate the relationship that Coach Hurley and his staff have with AAU and high school coaches.

I have no doubt that he would have been successful at St Johns.

Not all of us.

And for the record he would have jumped at the job in 2015. Of the 3 metro jobs (Rutgers, SHU and SJU) SJU was the one he coveted. His father loved Looie. And no I don't consider UCONN metro.

I know for a fact he would have taken the job. It's all water under the bridge now.

But it is just stunning that people act like he was the same risk as hiring Mullin or Anderson. That is literally insane. Nobody believes that. Nobody.

A former poster here with some hoops knowledge, who Panther and I know well, used to attend practices at Wagner when Hurley was HC. He praised his energy, knowledge and said there was not a wasted moment in those sessions. He predicted he would be a super head coach at a high major one day, very prescient. Btw, I attended some St Antony’s scrimmages and parallel practices once a year at Fairfield Prep when Bob Hurley brought his guys up there pre season. His sessions also were highly efficient and instructive. Obviously genetics count. Lastly and obviously Dan H and staff are excellent recruiters and putting kids in NBA.
