The Knee

Trump warns NFL owners that 'their business is going to go to hell' over National Anthem protests as he complains players weren't allowed to wear pink socks: 'One guy's mother had breast cancer!'
President hints that the NFL could collapse if team owners don't heed his demand to insist players stand for the pre-game National Anthem
'The NFL has to change,' he told reporters at the White House, 'or you know what's going to happen? their business is going to go to hell'
He blasted the pro football league Tuesday night at a fundraising dinner for Republicans in New York
'You can't dance in the end zone, you can't wear pink socks – one guy's mother had breast cancer and they wouldn’t let him – you can’t do anything,' he carped
'But you're allowed to sit down for the National Anthem!'
NFL viewership on TV is down 11 per cent this year compared to 2016
A majority of Americans agree with Trump that pro athletes should be forced to stand for the National Anthem, according to a new Reuters poll

I seen on facebook where fans of every team are burning jerseys, good let them keep kneeling and they'll kill the sport. F THE NFL.

A league source told CSNNE’s Gary Tanguay on Tuesday that all Patriots players will stand during the national anthem before next Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers at Gillette Stadium. Many stood and interlocked their arms during the anthem last Sunday before the game against the Texans, while a large portion kneeled.

Trump says Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones promised him America's Team will stand for the National Anthem: 'Jerry is a winner who knows how to get things done'
President praised Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Wednesday, saying he has assured him that his team will stand for the National Anthem before games
The entire Cowboys team, along with Jones, knelt and linked arms before the singing of The Star-Spangled Banner on Monday
They all stood in unison for the song itself , however
Jones has previously criticized players who take a knee and he had not yet commented on Donald Trump's denunciation of those who do so
At least 150 players across the NFL did not stand for the National Anthem before games on Sunday

A segment of Patriots fans in Foxborough, Mass., for example, nearly booed their own players off the field when some Pats sat or kneeled, with some screaming, "Stand up!"

JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s Shawn Quigg is encouraging investors to bet against CBS Corp. stock ahead of this weekend’s NFL broadcasts. The bank recommends buying an option that gives you the right to sell the shares at $57.50 on the likelihood that the stock will fall below that price after the company discloses ratings for the games. CBS closed at $58 on Tuesday.
(So betters on Redmen, here's a tips.)

Federal law does not protect workers in the private sector — only government employees.

“There is no federal law protecting against discrimination or retaliation for political activity” at private companies, Paula Brantner, a senior adviser at Workplace Fairness, told TheWrap. “A lot of people think they have First Amendment rights, but those only apply to government employees.”

Admittedly, I am a bit biased as my family/friends are made up of civil servants. I wish I could be as good a person as they are dedicating their lives to helping others..

There is nothing unlawful or against NFL rules regarding players kneeling.
It is about the image projected to the American people and younger fans in particular. Initially started by a white guy, Colin Kaepernick, to protest police brutality by labeling them all as murderers, it now is being taken for any "slight" real or imaginary against anyone who is African American. In the NFL case, it is a slight to millionaire black football players.
Those same football players are playing in front of mostly white customers who pay big bucks to watch them play football. Those fans represent the America that these employees of a private company see as the oppressors. They are happily oppressed all the way to the bank while mocking their fans. The image is if you are white you are not right. That, like the boy crying wolf, will eventually fall on fear ears.
At major publicly funded universities protesting can and is only tolerated if your group is from the left. Conservative speakers are "uninvited" to speak, and liberal professors from the left indoctrinate students in many ways to oppose anyone conservative. I have a niece who teaches at Haas - Berkeley and confirms that professors are an integral influence on stifling free speech on campus. (Those that kmow my name can look her up in the UC-Berkeley directory).
The image of Berkeley, the original bastion of free speech has gone down the toilet.
When NFL owners start seeing an erosion of their product's image with lower tickets sales, decreased viewers they may get the message but it may be too late.
The latest image and brand crisis at Louisville has finally forced the hands of administrators by firing one the greatest coaches in the collegiate modern era.
So whether you are an NFL owner trying to appease your black players, college professors trying to influence students or college presidents acting naive about college sports, beware of the long lasting image being projected.

On Sunday, most of the Packers locked arms during the national anthem and three sat through the song. Players on Tuesday invited fans at Thursday's game to join them in locking arms in a show of unity.

But unity could prove elusive.

"I am so ashamed of and appalled by the ignorance of any NFL player who would dare disgrace our Stars and Stripes or the memory of hundreds of thousands of fallen U.S. heroes who paid with their lives so that we may live free," said Steven Tiefenthaler, a native of Brookfield who now lives in San Antonio. Tiefenthaler is a Packers shareholder and 20-year U.S. Air Force veteran.

Tiefenthaler said he was humbled by once flying the remains of American servicemen to the states, an experience that stays with him.

"My allegiance to our American flag and to our national anthem will always stand far above any loyalty to the NFL or to the Green Bay Packers organization," he said.

My view, respectfully submitted:
The current controversy about standing for the Flag / the Anthem is intricate, confusing, emotional, and unwinnable. What does 'standing' for the Flag / Anthem 'mean' against 'taking a knee' while the Anthem is played and our glorious Flag waves in the wind?
What does the Anthem 'mean' versus the Flag?
When did it become customary to 'stand' for the Flag / Anthem at sporting events? When did it become mandatory? Do we stand for it when watching a game at home? Listening to a game on the radio? Do we stand for it when at a bar or restaurant and a game is about to begin? When did players 'have to' stand for it?
When our Armed Forces die in our wars--what do they die 'for'? Do they die for the 'Country", the 'Flag / Anthem?
The Anthem and Flag are entwined in our consciousness--but they signify different impulses and beliefs.
The Flag became the official symbol of the fledging American Colonies in 1777 by an Act of The Continental Congress.
The Anthem has a far more checkered history. It was written as a poem during the War of 1812 by a slaveholder waxing poetic that "...o'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming...the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our Flag was still there, O say does that star-spangled banned yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave(?)".
It was a bitter war. Aren't they all?
The third stanza carries some vague lyrics that "...no refuge could save the hireling and slave From terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave."
It puts into context the issues of the day. Hundreds of slaves and their families fled to the British, were promised their freedom, and fought for the British in that War.
What man (person) here would deny them that right? I won't.
The fourth stanza begins "O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand..."
Who was 'free' becomes fraught with history and context, doesn't it?
The Anthem was sung throughout the 19th Century primarily in bars, gradually at public events, more or less 'adopted' by the Navy in the late 1800's, sung at baseball games in the late 1890s, but became more important as a symbol on the eve of WWI, circa 1916, and was sung at the World Series in 1918.
But it did not become our 'official' National Anthem until 1931 under President Hoover and did not become 'mandatory' to be sung at games until 1942, in the early days of WWII.
This is not a history book. Following WWII, I'm not sure if baseball players had to stand for the Anthem at games.
As I understand it, NFL players didn't stand for it until 2009, when I believe the military offered millions to NFL Team owners to have their teams on the field as the Anthem was played. Still, I do not believe an NFL player is required by the NFL or his contract to stand for the Anthem on the field before a game.
I do not believe our soldiers die for our Country, our Flag or our Anthem in war. They die for the guy to the right and left of them. They die for each other.
Wars are political in nature and morally immoral at their core. It is arguable which wars are 'just' and which wars are not and it is 'academic'.
The blood of innocents and warriors alike bleed red, and 'treasure' is lost whether the war is 'unjust' or 'just'.
I think the flag stands for 'freedom'.
I think it is reasonable to give the benefit of the doubt to each of us, whether we believe our Flag and our Anthem is living up to that ideal of 'freedom'.
I believe it is every American's God-given right under the U.S. Constitution to express that view, peacefully, when our Flag is waving and our Anthem is sung.
To stand, to sit, to 'take a knee'.
It is called 'free speech'.
It is the bedrock of our beliefs.
Without it, the United States of America would cease to exist.

I think it is reasonable to give the benefit of the doubt to each of us

Sure, with the understanding that anyone who disagrees with your sanctimonious leftist twaddle is a Nazi.

Does the Ray Lewis statue depict him with a knife in his hand and blood on his shirt? Are there 2 dead bodies depicted on the ground around the statue?

Noooo. I base that on YOUR posts, my man. Not whether you agree or disagree with me but the tone & content of your character. Who you mock & taunt. YOU are a fascist...a neo-brown-shirt boot-stomping fascist. And that be a fact Jack. doo wa doo / doo wa diddy...from the great Stripes flick (first half).
I'm ready for a truce if you are.

and in the spirit of 'detente' Mr. Fun, I won't counter that my 'sanctimonious leftist twaddle' (great phrasing btw) is based on facts--those annoying tidbits that make fascists (& I guess commies) shiver in their boots.
Have a good night, man.

While players may have a legal , constitutionally protected right to take a knee while the national anthem is being played, they are not exempt from the ramifications of the results of the public reaction of a paying fanbase who may disapprove, and show its displeasure with their wallets.

I wanted to see Hamilton until the cast felt compelled to subject their audience to listen to an in character reading of a manifesto aimed at vice president mike pence. Had this been done in any entertainment forum to Barack Obama, leftist media would have exploded in outrage.

While musicians, actors, comedians, and athletes are free to express their political views in public forums they are not exempt from the results of declining revenues from a disapproving public.

It will break my heart if any player on STJ kneels while the anthem plays and my alma mater doesn't react to it. I have been a fan for over 70 years and graduated in 1959 , nothing was more exciting in sports than being in the garden for both, when we won the 1959 NIT and beating #1 Michigan in winning the Holiday Festival in 1964. I had so much joy in watching the Chris Mullin teams play. I could go on and on. But if my school does not honor my Country , I will be destroyed and not support them any longer and I have already bought tickets for the Advocare at Disney World.

No thanks. Anyway, why would you want entente with a "brown-shirt boot-stomping fascist"? Abbie Hoffman wouldn't climb out of his own puke to man the barricades with you, days of rage boy.

Speaking of fascism, you know that Mussolini defined it - and he'd know - as "Everything within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state." It seems to me that you'd have to be a very very very very very stupid person to have read even half a dozen of my posts and come away believing that I believe in the ascendancy of the government over the citizen, the greater good over personal happiness, or collective rights over individual liberties. Because that's what leftists champion: an intrusive government that enforces group rights through social engineering, censorship, nannyism, puritanism, and utopianism. Which are the lineaments of fascism properly understood, which I'm sure you don't understand, because you're an imbecile. Anyway, for future reference I agree with Nietzsche when it comes to government: "Everything the State says is a lie and everything it has it has stolen."

PS I see that one of the moderators has thanked you for slandering me. How wonderfully passive aggressive.

It should be removed, along with many others.

Remove the anthem? Remove the flag? Remove the advertisements? Remove all the racist white fans?
While they are at it, they should change the name of the District of Columbia, remove all indigenous references to teams, remove the statues of Columbus, and, while you are at it, protest the statue of Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville!
Oh, I forgot, I bunch of leftist white kids already did that while a bunch of far right white kids were peacefully protesting its presence. How it turned into a racial incident still befuddles me.
As for football, this is what a future football game's attendance will look like once we remove all the racist white fans!

A little fact checking. Tom is not a Moderator. We booted him from the club a long time ago because he doesn't agree with you. mkras however is a moderator and he gave you a Thank You so not sure what that all means but I'm sure he is sipping his vodka shirtless with his AK nearby, and enjoying it all as the masterful use of the Thank You gets you all to do his bidding.

mercifully the basketball season has started but painfully a few more weeks until we get a fun response to the games being played.

'72': heh? I was referring to removing Ray Lewis' statute along with Confederate Statutes--not the Flag. Geez, get a grip. I love our Flag.
